message 401: by Anna (last edited Aug 13, 2020 02:45PM) (new)

Anna "Yikes, the plague would be a nightmare," Jarin agreed with a groan to show how he felt about it. He stared around the dust coated room and sighed. "Monotonous may be the best blessing we can get."

He couldn't imagine what it would be like if one of them got sick--that would mess everything up. If either of them got sick, the other would have to try to take care of them until they were strong enough and not contagious any longer. Things were much different here than in the future.

Jarin stood and walked over to the fireplace where a few coals were smoldering underneath some of the wood. Their woodpile was growing smaller, but it would get them through the night. He piled a few pieces on to build it up before bed, and stirred them to encourage them to wake back up.

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Once Jarin moved to get up again Dasha's thoughts dissolved and she returned to the present, her hand dropping back down to her side. There was no use in worrying about it now, she simply needed to focus on surviving for now.
She watched as Jarin worked to rebuild the fire. Outside the sun was finally beginning to sink faster, the light coming in from the gaps in the boards now tinted orange. ". . . You know you're less helpless than I thought you would be." She thought aloud. The words left her mouth before she could even really think about them, but it was true. He had been able to survive his first day at a job here even with the injuries she had inflicted upon him, could start and tend to a fire, and most importantly had expressed a desire to learn to do things such as finding his own food rather than rely on her. It wasn't at all what she had expected from him. She realized that statement could be taken negatively and sighed, she didn't even know why she had said it in the first place really. She blamed it as being another impact of the heat and of not getting enough rest the night prior. She prepared herself to deal with the aftermath of the statement, already thinking of what to say further to amend it when he pointed out the negatives.

message 403: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin glanced over as she spoke those words, accidentally burning the tip of his thumb as he moved a piece of wood too close to the licking flames. He had already been surprised by her when she told him "thanks," and now here she was complimenting him in...well, her own way of complimenting, but one still the same. He grinned and shrugged.

"That's good, then," he said, and wondered why it made him happy to hear that. Over the past few days they had been here together, he had started hating her less and less and started wanting to...to please her? He blushed and focused back on the fire, turning away before she could see his heated cheeks. "I'd rather be a little helpful than just an extra butt in the way," he added. When the fire appeared to be steady, he turned to her. "Who's sleeping first? Or does that even matter if we take watch or not?"

message 404: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Upon realizing that he actually hadn't taken it the wrong way Dasha relaxed again. She supposed he was starting to get used to her, just as she was starting to get used to him. That was a good thing, it would make it easier to get through this if they both weren't automatically at eachother's throat at every word. Even so she didn't risk saying anything further and ruining this moment of peace.
She watched as he continued working with the fire until it was burning strong. She shrugged in reply to his question. ". . . It would probably be best if one of us still kept watch." She decided. She still wasn't quite comfortable enough here, especially in this building, to not have someone on watch. "I can take the first shift." She offered. She knew that in order for his back to heal a bit quicker he needed ample rest.

message 405: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin was relieved that she agreed to take the first watch. From all of the work he had done, even though none of it had been overly strenuous, his back was now quite sore and bothered. He needed it to heal quickly. Besides, his head was also hurting, probably due to the sun and lack of sufficient water.
"Thank you," Jarin said gratefully, and went to the door they had silently designated as sleeping room. He laid down, stretching out on his side and watching the flames flicker in the hearth. "Good night for now," he added, before falling silent. Eventually he fell asleep, faster than he would have expected.

message 406: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha took up a post where she had good view of the entrance of the structure and a glance of what was beyond. Tonight she was arming herself though, just incase. It had been foolish not to the night before. She pulled the knife that she kept tucked away in the lining of her boot out so that it was at the ready if she needed it.
The longer she watched the area with no signs of movement, the more slightly at ease she became. Since she had nothing else to do with her time awake, she took the opportunity to carve the notches that she had thought about earlier into a plank of wood jutting from the windowsill of a boarded over window. It was better than sitting completely idle. Being idle left room for unhelpful thoughts to creep in, and at this point those would be nothing more than an enemy.

message 407: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin eventually began snoring, low and mostly quiet, then rolled onto his chest and stopped. It was clear how worn out he was, but it wasn't because he was a prince instead of some other average person.

A while later, the shaggy stray dog returned, sniffling cautiously around the boards by the door and looking inside for any threats. Its nose twitched, and it could smell both Dasha and Jarin inside. This time, however, it held its front paw up and seemed to limp instead. It crept towards the door and stepped inside, watching Dasha warily.

Meanwhile, Jarin had started muttering in his sleep about George and someone else named Emmie. He groaned a little and shifted on the floor.

message 408: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments After she had the notches carved in there was little else for Dasha to do. When Jarin turned in his sleep she glanced over to him, just to make sure everything was all right. It was. She watched his sleeping form a little longer and found herself wondering why the bounty had been placed on him in the first place. Despite her original qualms against him, she couldn't really picture him doing anything to warrant such a fate. She supposed that was just one question she wouldn't know the answer to, and perhaps that was for the best while they were stuck here.
After a bit Dasha switched to watching the doorway again, and after a while of not seeing anything, decided to take the opportunity to relace her right boot which had been hastily laced up incorrectly before she had left to capture the prince. Before everything had changed.
She had just finished with it when she caught movement from the corner of her eye at the door. She looked up, her hand automatically going to where she had discarded her knife in order to free up both hands for the task she had just completed. It was the dog from last night again, but tonight there was no food for it to steal, and it looked worse off than before. She didn't know what it would do or how dangerous it was. These types of things were highly variable. Her glance strayed from it to Jarin as he mumbled in his sleep, unaware of anything going on. She looked back to the dog, becoming hyper aware of the weight of the knife in her hand. She didn't want to kill it, she never killed animals unless she had to. Keeping her eyes on it she slowly moved to get to her feet, intending to place herself between it and Jarin. Perhaps the movement would even scare it away.

message 409: by Anna (new)

Anna The dog looked very nervous, especially with the movements in the room and how he was already uncomfortable from his paw. He limped forward again, eyes never straying from Dasha as it sniffed the room. It wagged his tail slowly, lowering it. It lifted its paw up again and whimpered, then took a step back when Dasha moved. Jarin groaned again at the sound of the dog moving about, then silenced.

message 410: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Even at Jarin's groan Dasha's eyes didn't move from the injured dog. She searched for any signs of aggression it presented but found none, in fact it seemed quite the opposite. "You don't mean any harm, do you?" She realized aloud, keeping her voice soft as to not disturb the slumbering prince. She knew she should just scare it off, but something made her take pity on the dog. Perhaps it was simply because it looked as alone as they were in this time. Not wanting to frighten it she slowly lowered herself back to the ground, still between it and Jarin just in case. She set the knife down still within reach and at the ready if she needed it, but right now she doubted she would.

message 411: by Anna (new)

Anna When Dasha settled back down, the dog seemed to relax a little and came further into the room. It sniffed the room again, soon finding the leftover berries Jarin had picked. It snapped them up, though it wasn't really something a dog would normally eat. It was food, though, and they were gone within seconds. The dog eyed Dasha again before sinking to the floor near the door, stretching its paws out in front of himself. It wasn't going anywhere.

message 412: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha had forgotten about the berries and remembered them too late. Automatically her knife was in her hand again and she had it pulled back, ready to throw. But the damage was already done and killing it wouldn't fix anything. Besides, she could hardly blame it for just doing what it had to to survive. She let her hand holding the knife drop back to her side uselessly and watched as it settled its self near the door. She would just have to get up early and replace what it had ate. She could get by on just a couple hours of sleep anyway.

message 413: by Anna (new)

Anna The dog constantly watched Dasha, though it never made any attempt to move closer or leave. Jarin suddenly stirred again, and slowly pushed himself into a sitting position. "Emmie?" he asked sleepily, sounding disoriented. "Emmie? Where are you?" He was watching Dasha, though his eyes seemed unfocused and still glazed over.

message 414: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments With Jarin's movement Dasha's eyes finally strayed from the dog and over to him. Before she could even really think about it she was up and going over to check on him, the dog now forgotten. She was able to quickly pick up on the fact that he had clearly just woken from the middle of some dream. She couldn't help but wonder who this Emmie was that he was referring to. Perhaps it was a servant, or a friend, or even a sister. She guessed it really didn't matter. All that mattered right now was that he got back to sleep. "It was just a dream." She answered softly as she knelt down next to him. "Try to go back to sleep." Out of habit she still scanned him over anyway, looking for anything out of the ordinary that couldn't be written off as an effect of just waking up.

message 415: by Anna (new)

Anna "Emmie," Jarin said softly, his hand reaching over and taking Dasha's wrist gently in his hand. He relaxed a tiny bit with this, though he shivered and his skin felt hot and clammy. Over the last day and during the night, he had begun to have a fever, and now he was starting to act different. "Stay here, please," he pleaded, eyes searching hers.

message 416: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha wasn't used to anyone so much as laying a hand on her so casually and would have pulled away if not for the feel of his skin. Definitely too hot. It made her freeze. That mixed with the fact that he was talking nonsense set off internal warning bells. After a second she cautiously touched the back of her free hand to his cheek briefly and her stomach dropped. He definately had a fever, and a pretty severe one at that. Although she most definitely was not Emmie, Dasha knew better than to try and correct him. It would do no good as long as he was in this state. ". . . I'm not going anywhere." She assured softly with a very forced smile. "I'll be right here. Try and get some rest." She repeated again. A fever like this could only mean one thing- he had gotten an infection. Her mind was already running through what all she would need to do, but the first order of buisness would be to get his fever down. That was the most eminent and needed to be taken care of before she even attempted to do anything else.

message 417: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin shivered again and reached clumsily for her hand once more. Somehow he was believing that Dasha was Emmie, and he wanted to hold tightly to her during his confused state.
"I'm so cold," he mumbled. "It's so cold in here."
His eyes fluttered half closed again, though he started muttering nonsense under his breath. It was so quiet it was almost nonexistent. Most of all, there was something in Jarin's eye like fear.

message 418: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments "I know." Dasha murmured even though the heat of the day still somewhat lingered and the fire was keeping the area mostly warmed. "I'll take care of that." She assured further, but did not move yet. She wanted to make sure he calmed down before she left his side. She didn't need him somehow hurting himself further. At this point she really didn't think it wise to leave him at all, but it was unavoidable. She knew how to get the fever down, but she didn't have what she needed here, that would require venturing from these walls- thankfully not all that far, but still farther than what she was comfortable with with him in this state. As he mumbled nonsense she could feel her own panic rising but she took a deep breath and squashed it down. She didn't have time to entertain that now.

message 419: by Anna (new)

Anna His vision blurred, and he closed his eyes all the way. He was sweating a lot, but still he shivered. At least the comforting presence of Emmie helped him relax a little, as well as the soft voice. He slipped back into a light sleep, dreaming about fires and dragons trying to consume him, then being suspended over a bridge that smoked black, choking smoke. It went back and forth, bad dream to bad dream. But at least for now he seemed calmer than he had been a few minutes ago.

message 420: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha stayed where she was and watched over him until she was certain he had fallen asleep again. After that she got up again, careful to not make a sound as to not wake him. She quickly grabbed the knife that she discarded on the floor and spared one last glance behind at him before heading for the door. She needed to be quick about this, she didn't want him waking up again alone.
With nothing more than the silvery moon light to aide her, it was going to be a bit more difficult to find what she was looking for and she suddenly found herself wishing that the scorching hot sun was still overhead instead. She would just have to rely on her memory. Where had she seen them again? In the shade cast by a couple large gnarled trees about a quarter of a mile from here. It was one of the few places within this dusty nightmare beyond the forest supported by the river in which stubborn tufts of vegitation still managed to grow. She remembered because at the time everything there had seemed out of place. Now she was thankful for it, it saved her a longer journey back to the forest again. She hurried off, running the distance there to cut down on her time gone.
She only slowed as she neared the two trees which loomed dark against the slightly lighter night sky. She circled around the largest tree until she found them, their bright yellow blooms closed tightly against the darkness. Dandelions. In the future with modern medicine available they were little more than an annoying weed, but she knew when boiled into tea they could be used as an effective fever reducer. She dropped down next to the clump of them and pulled out her knife, using it to scrape away at the dry and compact earth. The blooms would work in a pinch, but the root would be the most effective.
At last she had the entirety of the plant in her hand. It wouldn't be enough to last long, but it would be enough for now. She didn't even bother putting her knife away before she took off back towards the building she had left Jarin in. As the building came into view she hoped that she would find Jarin still asleep just as she had left him.

message 421: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin was still sleeping, though he had shifted in his sleep to his other side. He was curled up in the fetal position, and appeared rather miserable. He was just as hot and sweaty as he had been before she left, if not a tiny bit more. The dog had moved positions as well and was now sitting a few feet closer to the unconscious man. He was awake, watching the empty space where the door used to be.

message 422: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha soon reached the structure and wasted no time in ducking back inside. She immediately looked to where she knew she had left Jarin, though it took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the change in light levels. Once she saw that he was still asleep she breathed a sigh of relief, but also noted how he still looked pretty worse for the wear. Of course she had expected as much, there was no way he was just going to spontaneously recover. She only noticed that the dog was still there as an after thought, while she started making arrangements to get the dandelion root boiling. She would have to use the cup and just wait for it to cool down, there was no other option at the moment. She filled it with water and dropped the root in after cleaning it of dirt. She used a stick to push it close to the flames which she fueled with a bit more wood. She just needed the water to heat up enough to activate the root. While it warmed she searched for the scraps of fabric she had left from her attempt at bandaging up his wounds. She intended to soak that in water from the bucket and use it to try and cool him down a bit as well.

message 423: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin groaned and tried pushing the cloth from his forehead when she went to try cooling him down with it. He slapped feebly at her hands and turned his head away.
"Cold," he complained in his sleep. To him, the dream had shifted to where he was sitting in front of a massive bonfire, arms and legs tied to his sides so he could barely move them. A large hand kept reaching through the fire and pressing its palm against his forehead, the heat so strong it felt cold. He tried fighting it, but tied down, he could do nothing to ward it off.

message 424: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Despite his complaints Dasha kept at it, knowing she had to get his fever down. After a bit she set it aside and got up to go check on the dandelion root tea. She used the same stick she had used to push it up next to the fire to carrfully move it back. The end caught fire and she blew it out, sending a small ribbon of smoke dancing away into the darkness. She eyed the contents of the cup, the water now a murkier yellow brown color from what the root had expelled into it from the heat. She knew better than to touch the cup with her bare hands, it would have to cool for a bit. Besides, it was probably best that the contents got a chance to cool down, she didn't want to give Jarin anything too hot that might raise his temperature even more.

message 425: by Anna (new)

Anna The dog observed Dasha curiously, dark eyes scanning her every move. She was making something, that much was for certain. It stood and slowly limped over towards the fire, staying a good way from the woman but still keeping his gaze on the cup. Did it contain food? Could he eat it?

Jarin started talking again, muttering about those two people, George and Emmie. Other than that, he was exactly the same.

message 426: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Having grown to expect his feverish mumbling by this point, Dasha wasn't nearly as caught off guard by it and remained in her spot by the fire as there wasn't much more that she could do for the moment. She poked at the fire with a long stick, shifting a few pieces of wood that had fallen to the side back into the fire while she waited for the cup to cool down. She thought ahead to what would come after this. Getting his fever down was just the first step, then she would have to find a way to take care of the infection. She hadn't yet looked to see how bad it was, but she was expecting it to be none too pretty considering it was enough to give him a fever like this. After a few more minutes she cautiously touched the cup to see if it had cooled down enough to touch yet. She found it still to be fairly warm, but bearable to touch. She picked up the cup and took it over to the water bucket. Holding it close to the rim she submerged the bottom half of it in the cooler water to help the remainder of the heat dispel quicker.

message 427: by Anna (new)

Anna The dog was about to stick his nose into the cup to try the drink when Dasha reached for it instead. He backed up and sank back to the ground on his belly. He was glad the woman wasn't shouting at him this time, and if there was any chance of food around here, he wasn't going to pass it up.

Jarin curled up again like a little child. He sort of gave the appearance of one, lying there innocently with a few strands of his longish dark hair curling around his forehead where it was sweaty. At the same time, it was slightly absurd because he also had large arms very unlike a child. He didn't hear as Dasha worked to finally cool the drink down enough, sleeping through his strange dreams.

message 428: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha held the cup halfway submerged in the water for a while, until she was happy with the temperature of the liquid within it. Once she pulled it out she dried the outside of the cup off with the bottom part of her shirt so it wouldn't be slippery. She then headed back over to where Jarin was and kneeled down next to him, cup still in hand. She almost hated to try and wake him since he had fallen asleep again, but he wasn't going to get any better if she didn't intervene. In fact it would probably get worse. She placed her free hand on his shoulder and gave it a shake. "Hey. . . you need to wake up."

message 429: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin groaned and shivered, pushing her hand away as if he were drunk. He blinked and opened his eyes blearily. He sat up and shivered, looking at Dasha.
"I'm cold. And I'm tired..." he mumbled, and went to lay down again. "It's so cold, Emmie. You need to go to sleep..." But he wasn't cold at all. He was still burning up and very sick looking. He had deteriorated already quite a bit during the short time, and he still didn't recognize Dasha for being Dasha.

message 430: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha let her hand fall back as he pushed it away. She hadn't expected him to look any better without intervention, but she also hadn't expected him to look worse with such little time spent. "I know, I know, but this will warm you up a little bit," She promised, needing to get him to sit up again. It was still a bit warm, so at least that wasn't an outright lie. "drink it and then you can go back to sleep".

message 431: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin grunted and sat back up, then waited for the strange lights to move out of his vision. When they did, he looked blearily at the cup. It would warm him up? He took it from her and looked at the discolored liquid. He tipped it back and took a sip. The bitter taste made him twist his face into a grimace, and he set it down on the ground. "Tastes bad..." he mumbled.

message 432: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha made sure it didn't get knocked over as it got set down. "Maybe a bit." She admitted. Straight up dandelion root tea never exactly tasted pleasant, but it did get the job done. "but it won't work with just one sip, so you might as well finish it." She countered, hoping that the promise of being warm would be enough to get him to finish it. She didn't want to have to try and force it down him, that wouldn't go well.

message 433: by Anna (new)

Anna "Just put more wood on the fire..." He trailed off, shaking his head. He picked it up, nearly splashing it over the brim. He swallowed another sip but ended up with the same results; looking disgusted, pushing it away, and complaining that it tasted bad. He mumbled something about how nobody should have to drink that stuff. It was clear he wanted to go back to sleep, but he waited as if needing confirmation that he could close his eyes and lay down again.

message 434: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha watched as he took another sip, and ultimately discarded it again. She picked it up and checked the contents of the cup. Since she hadn't had much in it to begin with he had drank about half of it which was less than what she had hoped, but also not terrible. It was a good start anyway and she could always try to get him to drink more later. It was probably best it was spaced out anyway. "Alright, just get some rest." She said with a sigh.

message 435: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin accepted her words and stretched back out onto the floor of the hut. He was so tired and so cold, and all he wanted to do was sleep forever. It would be even better if the nightmares retreated, but they still hadn't and he drifted back into another round of bad, haunting dreams. He slept for a long time, until suddenly the dreams disappeared and Jarin was nearly motionless in his sleep. He had stopped muttering, and he lay there silently.

message 436: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Once he settled back in Dasha took the cup and placed it on the ledge above the fire place, not wanting it to get accidentally knocked over. There was little more that she could do for him right now. Anything more would involve leaving him here alone, and she definately wasn't going to do that until his fever was under control. She moved to sit in front of the fire, but stayed close enough that she could keep an eye on him. She was tired herself, but knew it was best to stay awake. Besides, this had been her fault, now she had to deal with the concequences. She stared at the fire as it burned, occasionally moving to toss more on it or to check on Jarin.
As time went on in an effort to conserve the quickly dwindling pile of fuel, she started to let the fire burn down further and further before she tossed more on. By this point it had gotten pretty low again, and she decided to toss some more on. After that was done she decided to go check on Jarin again.

message 437: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin had been sleeping for the entire time since Dasha had woken him to drink the root tea. He wasn't moving and shifting in his sleep like before and had stopped muttering and talking about people from his past. But who knew if that was a good or bad thing; sometimes it could be true improvement, and other times it could be pseudo and he could get much worse again. Either way, his temperature hadn't grown any worse (nor had it decreased) and he was sleeping soundly for now. His wounds along his back were red and hot, and they seemed to be leaking a small amount of pus. The dog remained inside the shelter and watchful, though mostly on Dasha and not the door itself.

message 438: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha once again knelt down by Jarin and placed the back of her hand against his skin to get a feel for how his temperature was. Upon finding it to be practically the same as earlier she frowned slightly. The dandelion root tea had always worked for such things in the past . . . Of course he had only drank about half of it and it was the first time she had introduced it. It would probably just take some more time. Once the sun came up she could venture out further and get the other things she needed to take care of this, but for now she was stuck.

message 439: by Anna (new)

Anna ((I'll skip to morning for us since it's probably going to be the same thing for the rest of the night.))

Jarin slept silently the rest of the night without moving so much as an inch. When morning rose, he was still sleeping.

The dog had disappeared again, heading out before the new day. It was as if he were only a shadow; slipping in for the night and slipping away before the sun found him.

Jarin eventually stirred from his place on the ground and opened his eyes. He still wasn't much cooler, but at least the tea had prevented it from getting worse. He rubbed a hand down his face and looked around the cabin, confused at where he was. He pushed himself to his rear. When his eyes landed on Dasha, some recognition filled his eyes.

message 440: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments By the time the sun was rising, the once blazing fire had dwindled to nothing more than a few coals glowing faintly amongst a pile of light grey ashes. Dasha still sat near it though, staring ahead and down at the spent ashes as she idly drew patterns through them with a stick with a scorched end before ultimately smoothing them over again. It had kept her occupied while Jarin slept anyway. She had tried to get in a couple hours of rest herself, but it had been of no use for her to even try. At every slight sound she had heard while starting to drift off she had been jolted awake again, worried that it was Jarin or something more that would bring harm upon them, and she would have to check on the slumbering prince before she could even think about settling in on the ground again.
Now that the sun was making it's ascent she was a bit less on edge. In the light nothing could sneak up on her. Still when she heard movement her immediate reaction was to turn and check on Jarin who was now sitting up. ". . . You're awake." She knew she was stating the obvious but she needed a gage on his condition and figured his reply would reveal if he was still in whatever hallucinatory world he had been in the night before. She set the stick aside and got up so she could go check his temperature as well.

message 441: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin blinked a few times and yawned as if he hadn't gotten any sleep at all. But he had, and it should be Dasha would was yawning instead.
"I'm not dead?" He asked, looking over at her. His brain was still foggy from sleep, and a little from his fever, but he appeared to be more aware of what was going on now. His temperature had cooled by a few degrees, but it was still a fever. "I thought I died or something," he added as Dasha made her way over to him to check his temperature. The dreams and nightmares he had had through most of the night had often been so vivid that he was sure they had happened. And now he didn't know what to think. He wasn't swinging over a bridge by one foot while a fire raged at either end and threatened to drop him below, but he was still in a place that wasn't like the home he remembered from the palace.

message 442: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments "No, not yet." Dasha replied as she knelt down next to him and then touched the back of her hand to his forehead. He was still much too warm. Her lips pressed into a firm straight line for a moment, the only outward hint of her worry. "I'm not letting you take the easy way out of this". She forced an attempt at a teasing smirk as her hand dropped away and she stood up again. She went back over to the fireplace and grabbed the half full cup that she had placed on the mantle last night. Its contents was long cold by now and slightly darker since it had had time to sit. "This doesn't taste the best, but you need to finish it." She said as she went back over to Jarin and held it out for him to take.

message 443: by Anna (new)

Anna Jarin frowned at her words and took the cup, glancing warily inside of it. He didn't really remember drinking this, but it gave off a strange sort of smell. "This looks bad," he stated, wrinkling his nose. "I...I'm not very thirsty." He watched her and set the cup down beside him, pulling his knees to his chin. "I need to go to work. The blacksmith will be expecting me..." Jarin mumbled, shivering.

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments "You're not going anywhere, you're going to stay here and rest." Dasha stated, leaving no room for any sort of negotiation. "You're not out of the woods yet, you still have a high fever and we'll have to do something about that infection or it will kill you." She hadn't directly looked at his back yet, but for now she was going to assume the worst and anything less than that would be a pleasant surprise. She picked up the cup he had set aside and held it out to him again. "I know you don't want to drink it, but you need to. It'll keep your fever from spiking any more. I need to go take care of some things, but I can't do that if I suspect your temperature will rise again and disorient you- making you a hazard to yourself." She hoped he wouldn't argue, with running on very little rest she doubted her usually already thin patience would hold for long. She waited to see if he would willingly take the cup or if she would have to find another way to trick him into drinking it or force it down him.

Anna Jarin grumbled something under his breath like an ornery child and took the cup, swishing the liquid around. "I don't see how this is going to help. Medicine always reeks and tastes nasty." He wanted to argue, but Dasha's expression told him he better not. He raised it to his lips and tried gulping some down quickly, but it still touched his tongue and he made a face. It was one of the worst things he'd tasted, he was sure, and it was all he could do not to gag on it. He gulped back the rest and handed her the cup, only with a few drops inside. "I did it..." He mumbled. "But I have to go to the blacksmith. I can't just not show up. How will we get out of here?"

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha took the cup, dumped the spent root fragments out and the rinsed it before filling it with water from the bucket and then offering it up to him so he could try and chase away the bitter taste. "I'll take care of it, let him know that you're not simply a no show." She assured. She knew he had a point though, if he didn't go that would be just that much more of a delay in getting back to the time they needed to be in, and delays were not something that she could afford many of. She took in a slightly sharper breath at the thought.. This was an unavoidable delay though. "Don't worry about that right now. You definately won't be able to get us home if you end up dying on the job." She pointed out.

Anna Jarin nodded, taking the cup once more from her and swallowing it faster than he normally would have. The bitter flavor was still there, but it was mostly gone and now bearable. He rubbed his face and sighed tiredly. "I don't want to die, Dasha. Don't let me die," he pleaded, looking miserable. He was miserable. He still shivered with fever and his back hurt. And he just wished he could go home, but he couldn't. Being homesick was one of the last things he would have thought he'd ever feel. He lay down on his side and grunted, putting his head on his arms.

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha knew he would probably benefit from hearing a few reassuring words, but things like that had never really been her strong suit- probably mostly due to the fact that in her line of buisness there was never really any need for such. Until now that is. "I don't plan on it . . . like I said earlier, I'm not letting you take the easy way out of this." Sure she hadn't been all that fond of Jarin at first,, but that didn't mean she wanted to watch him suffer. Especially not due to an injury that she had personally inflicted. The weight of the knowledge that she had caused this weighed heavier on her than the effects of her restless night.
She stood up, brushing some of the dust from her clothing. "Anyways, I should get going. The sooner I leave, the sooner I'll get back. And the sooner I get back with what I need the sooner we'll get through this." She went over to where the basket of sheets she had washed yesterday was sitting and picked them up. Dropping those off would be one of her first stops on the way into the heart of the little run down town. "You should try to get some more rest while I'm gone."

Anna Jarin gave a tired smirk and nodded once. He watched her pick up the basket of clean towels and head towards the small door. "Okay. Thanks. And...be careful," he added, already drifting back off to sleep. Before Dasha could reply to his comment, he was sleeping again and drifting into a dream again. Jarin hadn't liked Dasha at all when they first met for quite obvious reasons, but he really couldn't blame her for how she acted. She had been a bounty hunter for probably many years now, and it was simply her job. It was her way to survive, just like he had his own ways to survive, though his was much different than hers.

Lynn (papergalaxies) | 2178 comments Dasha spared one last glance back, finding Jarin already asleep again, before ducking under the board still obstructing the upper part of the doorway and out of the structure. She waisted no time in starting off. She wanted to get everything done quickly as she wasn't too comfortable with leaving him alone for long. Her first stop would have to be the blacksmith as she didn't want the man to be left waiting.
