Spoilers Ahead - that leads to her discovering some weird trail of clues. I think the protagonist had a male friend with some will they/won't they thing going on, and she may have been working for him as well. Eventually they discover a planet that was somehow blown off course and the people there have very weird evolutionary adaptations to their planet but I can't remember what. I don't have all the details correct, but would appreciate help identifying this story.
