After the letdown of Celine, The River is Heller back to his form. I loved every moment of this book, fast paced without a wasted word, and found myself in tears at the conclusion. While this book didn't have the hometown setting of the Mountain West that I loved so much in The Painter and Dog Stars, the story had that same driving feel and left me with an ache, the way only the best book can. This will definitely make my best of 2019 list, and I'll recommend it to every reader I know.

I enjoyed this one very much, too. Such an exciting story set in a picturesque but unforgiving region. I've not read anything else by Heller but it sounds like maybe I should skip "Celine".
Ahhh!!! Okay, that seals it. I am getting to this sooner rather than later. Ellen, I think Sara and I would both say to skip Celine. I thought his other two books were excellent though, and I would recommend both of them. I gave the slight edge to The Painter over The Dog Stars but it was really just splitting hairs.
I've only read one Peter Heller, but feel like I am missing out! Great review of the River . . .oh my groaning TBR.

Dog Stars is post apocalyptic, but it is more a story of survival like this one.

But I may be biased because I've given three of his four novels 5 stars. Even Celine got three, so not a bad book by any stretch of the imagination, just not up to his high standards.
