Erin E (elizamc) Syra, I loved Water for Elephants too and found the movie worth it!

I am racing through the last book of Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games, oh my goodness! It is a lot better than I had expected this trilogy to be and infact I am actually looking forward to the movie that will eventually come out!

Finished Water for Elephants. Great book.

Now reading Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Reminds me of 84 Charing Cross Road.

Nicole | 1752 comments Sy--never heard of Wyrd Museum. What is it?

Fallen is turning out to be a pretty decent book for the genre/age-group it's aimed at. Better written than several of its literary 'cousins', for sure.

Werner | 2693 comments I'm currently reading The Steel Mirror (1948) by Donald Hamilton. (It turned out that I didn't finish Out of This Nettle; while I usually like Norah Lofts' work, that one was too unremittingly bleak and depressing for my taste, and I didn't warm up to the protagonist.) At under 200 pages, and with Hamilton's very fast-driving prose style, I'm expecting my current book to be a quick read, and right now that's what I was looking for.

Werner | 2693 comments Well, when I expected The Steel Mirror to be a quick read, I wasn't wrong; I've already whipped through it! I wanted to follow it with another book I could finish before the common read of Madselin for next month starts in the Norah Lofts fan group; and since I'm off work this week and our car was in the shop, I decided to pick a book that's here at home, not in the TBR piles in my office. :-) So, today, I started Blood and Bitter Wind by the late Earl Murray. It's a Western hardcover I got for Barb for her birthday last year; she liked it and recommended it, so I'm giving it a try.

Nicole | 1752 comments I'm finding the stream-of-consciousness style (or something!) of Reading Lolita in Tehran a major challenge.

message 407: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1752 comments Right on, Charly! One more "no" vote for TTW! :)

Among others, I'm reading a Regency mystery, The Hanover Square Affair.

message 408: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked the Alchemist. Been gone so long I have long list: Chocolat, Blackberry Wine, first 6 women's Murder club, and currently reading Jane Eyre.

message 409: by [deleted user] (new)

Callista: I think I got Wyrd Museum several years ago when it was compared to Harry Potter, but it is a father who get a job as caretaker in Wyrd Museum where 3 strange sisters reside and the oldest boy has the adventures. Probably YA but I really enjoyed them.

message 410: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2693 comments As of yesterday, I started another Norah Lofts historical novel, Madselin, set in the England of 1067, just after the Norman conquest in 1066. I was asked to lead the discussion of it in the Lofts fan group, where we're doing it as a common read.

Nicole | 1752 comments Summer doldrums? All three of the books I'm trying to read right now are "so-so"...

message 412: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) ooh.... Just finished The Twilight of Lake Woebegotten SC... Unmm, this satire is the best I have read yet, it say's everything the cynics wished had happened, while still maintaining Jacob and Edward in their true forms...

message 413: by [deleted user] (new)

Still reading Jane Eyre and also started Jeffrey Deaver's Bloody River Blues (Written as Jeffrey Williams)

message 414: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2693 comments Currently, I'm reading another of Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm novels, Murderers' Row. (I was basically looking for a quick, not-very-deep read.)

OMG...I hadn't heard of this! The description is wonderful. I may have to check it out.

As for what I'm reading:
Outlander--finally
and
Ghost Story (Dresden Files 13)--obsessively.

message 416: by [deleted user] (new)

Bloody River Blues was eh which surprises me since I love Deaver's other books. Still enjoying Jane Eyre. Will probably start now on my Patricia Corwell books, have about 12 or so.

message 417: by [deleted user] (new)

Light reads: Tony Hillerman mysteries, J A Jance, (sorry I seem to be stuck on mysteries), Dorothy Parker poetry is great fun.

message 418: by [deleted user] (new)

Started Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell.

netgalley.com, there are a lot of ebooks there you can request to read before they are published! I've enjoyed everyone so far.

Smokin' Seventeen

I finished Smokin' Seventeen and started back on Born on a Blue Day. He is writing about pi so I needed a break from all the numbers.

message 421: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) I just finished Still Missing, it was an absorbing and quick read, I could not put it down. I am tempted to check out Never Knowing, but the styles are so similar that I think I might wait a little bit.

Right now I am reading The Surrogate and it is equally engaging!

message 422: by [deleted user] (new)

A Discovery of Witches 5 stars so far, its an 800 page book and I am just into it.

Alice, I could NOT put that book down! I'd love to discuss it with you when you finish it!

message 424: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) I just finished The Surrogate and I have no idea what I want to read next, Spell Bound is teasing me, but I said no more new purchases until September... so we'll see what I find to read come Thursday.

message 425: by [deleted user] (new)

It is hard to put it down. It has been good for keeping my mind off my sorrows. There is a little chit chat going on already at the review place here. I also did 4 or 5 neverending quiz questions. I did delete one as it wasn't too hot.

Oh, just remembered I started a little chat too on Grown-Up Twi-hards. I think there are some similarities to Twilight. Matthew reminds me of Edward but Diana does NOT remind me of Bella. I tried to make a list there.

Werner | 2693 comments For the present, I'm just dipping into Masterpieces of Fantasy and Wonder at odd moments when I get a chance to read. Both my wife and I are really occupied with an emergency in our extended family, which disrupts our routine very much, and will continue for several weeks. So this cuts down a lot on my time for both reading and being online here at Goodreads.

This is certainly a good choice for you right now. Glad to see you are able to post. Just said a short prayer for you minutes ago.

Erin E (elizamc) Werner, I hope things are going well. Healing thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

Werner | 2693 comments Thanks so much, Erin. Things here are much better than they were at this time last week!

message 431: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Postmortem by P. Cornwell. Started Fever Dream by Preston & Child (wrote Relic), listening to Tom Clancy's Dead or Alive on cd read by Lou Diamond Phillips who is doing a great job. And still working on Jane Eyre.

Anyone read THE HELP or seen the movie. I got it (on my Kindle shhhhh) and the movies looks interesting.

Nicole | 1752 comments Heaven help me, I think I've gotten pulled into another YA paranormal romance series: Wicked Lovely.

Reggia | 2533 comments Syra, The Help is on my to-be-read-very-soon list. Please let me know when you start it; it'd be fun to discuss with someone else. And if anyone else would like to join in, please do so! Just need to finish The Thirteenth Tale.

I am so glad to finally be getting some good reading time in this last week or so (it's been a very dry time without books these last few months). :) I think it makes me happier, more content, perhaps my particular form of meditation. I know it may sound a little silly but I'm sincere. ;)

message 435: by Reggia (new)

Reggia | 2533 comments Werner, missed that things weren't well but am certainly glad to hear that the situation is improving.

Hi Syra, I read The Help a couple of weeks ago. There are some very good posts about it on a new group I just joined...Clean Reads. I felt it was an emotional roller coaster but believe I gave it 5 stars. What did you think? Will you see the movie?

The Help

I walked into Barnes and Noble yesterday while hubby was in another store and immediately headed for YA!!! I relate Callista as since I got on goodreads I just read one YA after another. I just got one I grabbed very quick and so far I like it. It is The Nine Lives of Chloe King and seems to be 3 books in one.

Will try to discuss it along with you. Its a book you won't forget quickly altho I may forget small details. I laughed and cried.

Reggia, I read somewhere that when you are reading the brain makes waves that are the same type as seen in meditation so I understand and think you are right. I think this is especially true if you are reading the right kind of book. I am sure if I am reading one that upsets me too much its not those type of brain waves.

We certainly do. I have learned so much just on goodreads.

message 441: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks all. Will let you know what I think after I've read it.

message 442: by [deleted user] (new)

Won't see the movie until it comes out on tv or Netflix. Waiting for shoulder replacement and still don't know what's with my back so they just shoot me with cortisone every 2=3 months. Yippee.

Charly: Take heart Reggia The Thirteenth Tale does eventually end.

Hmm... Charly, are you suggesting this book drags on?

message 444: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Jane Eyre. Now reading The Help.

message 445: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2693 comments Thanks, Reggia (message 511). Sorry to take so long in responding to your kind post; I'm not online much right now, so my e-mailed Goodreads notifications of people's comments pile up! (And my e-mail program places the older ones at the bottom of the stack, where it takes a long time to work down to them!)

Syra, you have my sympathy with your shoulder situation. My prayers are with you! Hang in there.

Nicole | 1752 comments Currently reading Oliver Twist.

message 447: by [deleted user] (new)

Also listened to Jack Higgins' The White House Connection, Dark Justice and Without Mercy. (Do this while knitting or crocheting so I can keep up with my books.) And also on cd T. Jefferson Parker's Pacific Beat.

I read it and saw the movie; I give both 3stars because I felt it was cavalier when it needn't be in places and also disrespectful in some places. It was ok,not outstanding in my view but respect everyone else's opinions :)

message 449: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm really enjoying The Help having seen "Colored Town" when growing up in VA and black cleaning ladies, etc. My only problem is I want to smack some of those "fancy white ladies" for some of the stuff they do and say.

message 450: by Erin E (new)

Erin E (elizamc) I haven't been doing much reading sadly - too much drama in my personal live and I really sadly don't have time for books. I will soon though!
