Jaina | 42 comments I don't know if this has been mentioned, but sensory things really help when I write. For example, I always drink licorice tea before/while I write and never at any other time. That way the smell and taste of licorice tea automatically gets me in the mood to write. Or if I need to imagine a place that I'm writing about more vividly I'll burn incense with a scent that suits the ambiance I'm going for. It's kind of strange, but it works!

Anna That is so cool! I need to try that!
I also read that George Orwell recommends that authors ask themselves six questions while they are writing:

1.What am I trying to say?
2.What words will express it?
3.What image or idiom will make it clearer?
4.Is this image fresh enough to have an effect?
5.Could I put it more shortly?
6.Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?

Hi Sydney -- this is definitely a great piece of advice! I feel like your readers will enjoy your story if you are enjoying it while you write it. :)

message 65: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Parise | 30 comments I heard this really weird tip the other day... I'm not sure whether I fully agree or not. It says that any part of your story you absolutely love, you will eventually have to get rid of.
Strange, huh?

message 66: by Katlynn (new)

Katlynn (bookswithkatlynn) I've heard that too

message 67: by Jaina (new)

Jaina | 42 comments That's interesting... What was the context? What do they mean by "get rid of"? O.o

message 68: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Parise | 30 comments I think it meant either change it or cut it out completely, but I'm not sure.

message 69: by Haley (new)

Haley S (haleyjs) Hmm...strange

I've heard of an app (think its apple) called Prompts, it gives you words or sentences to help you think of ideas.

Haley S (haleyjs) That is cool!

message 74: by Jaina (new)

Jaina | 42 comments There are a few Tumblr pages like that too.

message 76: by Katlynn (new)

Katlynn (bookswithkatlynn) I wrote a first draft but I can't seem to get in the swing of editing and I usually love editing. Anyone have any ideas??

message 77: by Haley (new)

Haley S (haleyjs) Hmm...keep trying. Don't give up. Or take a break for a while. Then try again.

Katlynn (bookswithkatlynn) Well I have a new idea. I posted it in the writing category.

Jaina | 42 comments Question!
Do you think character questionaires are helpful when planning or a bad idea (and why)? I've met a lot of people who go both ways.

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they're useful to remember things and refer to

message 83: by Haley (new)
