Michelle | 11 comments The mum minder written by Jacqueline Wilson, tells the story of Sadie a nine year old girl who has to step into her mothers shoes (so to speak) when her mum, a childminder becomes ill with the flu.

The story is written in a diary format and we follow Sadie throughout a half term week, in which she has to help the parents of the children her mother usually minds. Sadie is a very independent and able nine year old who assists her mum frequently by helping with the children in her mums care. She sees herself as more of her mum assistant then a child.

When Sadie's mum becomes too ill to look after the children the parents take it in turn to mind each other's children and they could not have done it without Sadie.

I do not want to disclosure anymore as that is the general plot in a nutshell. It is a nice easy read aimed at KS 2 girls. I would suggest that it is a good read for those pupils taking the first steps towards chapter books as this book is segmented by the days of the week and therefore only consists of 7 'chapters.'

It could also be used a class book to introduce the diary style of writing, pupils could write an imaginary week in which funny or strange things happen to them, or like Sadie they could be tasked with keeping a half term diary.
