Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 204 comments Arlene wrote: "Not being given a wife was one of his issues the other was the doctor created him and then left him (ran in horror). I never understood the running part, the doctor made him he knew what he looked like. ..."

On top of everything else, The doctor had a lousy bedside manner and acted unprofessionally. I would not want him for my doctor.

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 204 comments I find in older books an importance is given to physical beauty that is not found in today's society.

(I think Frankenstein made a potentially good situation into a very bad one by rejecting his creation.)

Arlene I agree about Frankenstein, had the doctor not rejected him I believe he would have been a completely different person.
Had Dorian's grandfather been a different man (kind to his grandson) would Dorian have been different? Would Lord Henry have been able to have such influence over him?

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 204 comments He was very naive. I think maybe a good influence might have helped.

Arlene I agree, the artist warned him not to listen to any thing that Lord Henry said.

So which do you think was more of a monster, Dorian or Phantom?

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 204 comments Beauty is only skin deep. Ugly goes all the way to the bone.

Joseph “Millennium Man” (millenniumman) | 204 comments I find it difficult to find sympathy for Dorian. He had more than anyone and still wanted more.

message 58: by Lee (new)

Lee I read Phantom years ago. But at the time anyway, I did have sympathy for him. Eric shouldn't be the romantic figure he has become, but I do relate to how it happened. I read Picture of Dorian Gray a few months ago and I had no sympathy for him whatsoever. None. Both have monstrous qualities, but one big difference between the two, Eric knows he is a monster (also, (view spoiler)) and Dorian doesn't. It's much easier to have sympathy for someone who doesn't believe they're perfect.

Arlene Nienna I completely agree with you

message 60: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Even though I have not yet finished Lolita, I started this last night when I couldn't sleep and am already a quarter of the way through it. I like how readable Leroux's writing style is -- one seems to fly through every chapter.
