I feel as though while other series' like UnOrdinary have a similar setting, this chapter has an entirely different atmosphere, more akin to the beginning of Tiger and Bunny. Perhaps because of the age rating, UnOrdinary lets superpowers run rampant and it's more about the survival of the fittest, while Academia shows off how society has been able to create reasonable normalcy because of the fact that almost all people have quirks. As compared to Incredible's villain's quote, "And when everyone becomes super... no one will."

As compared to Incredible's villain's quote, "And when everyone becomes super... no one will." A great comparison is also setup between Deku and Kacchan (though it is interesting to see foreshadowing in the nicknames they both have). They both grew up in the same area and setting, but with drastically different upbringings because of quirks. Katsuki is what may happen to children who are excessively praised and given too many expectations, while Izuku's self identity dwells on proving his quirklessness won't stop his ambition with a more authoritative upbringing.
Katsuki is also an interesting character because even though he may use his quirk for delinquency now, he doesn't want anything to stop him from going to his dream school and becoming a hero, shown off when his friends' (or should I say underlings) are smoking. Unfortunately, because of Katsuki's prideful interaction with Izuku at the end, we are unable to see what could have been extreme worry in Katsuki's eyes as his record has now been tainted by being controlled by a villain.
As we continue I predict we'll get a very Naruto vs. Sasuke rivalry as they are both accepted into the school, with Izuku getting extra anxieties as he adapts to new surroundings and circumstances (I did read the first volume a long time ago so my memories of what happens are fuzzy).
As I read this chapter I will have to admit I also saw a very naruto vs sasuke vibe going on. I quiet enjoyed how they introduced us to this world without repeating the opening for every manga that has superhero’s or a supernatural like element.

I'm up to date with the manga so they are no surprises there... but ï do remember when I first read it for the first time(watched the first episode lol) i did cry for midoriya after all he went through no one believed in him... but he still believed in himself and I think that is very inspiring!!

Perhaps because of the..."I love that you brought UnOrdinary into the discussion! I didn't even think of it. However I do slightly disagree on the comparison. At least at the high school level of the Academia world stronger is better. If you have a weak quirk, or no quirk like Izuku, you're at the bottom of the food chain and you get bullied. This isn't unlike how it is in UnOrdinary. The difference is in UnOrdinary the dynamic seems to carry into adulthood.
This chapter had me hating Bakugou or Katsuki (however you prefer to refer to him), but I also sympathized at the same time as I understand if you are raised around praise then you are going to expect the best. Izuku reminds me of every anime protagonist ever with extra tears and I can't help to root for him, though in the last scene I wish he was excited over crying. I can understand why he's crying I just wish you could tell he was crying happy tears instead of sad ones.

I watch and love the anime series and have been meaning to get to the manga. Although I know the general outcome I just love how the book adds a bit more to the whole experience. My first thoughts on Izuku were "Wow this kid is emotional" but I honestly really love that about his character. This protagonist is just a fanboy with a dream of becoming great! I can't wait to read all of the volumes!

Okay so I quite like the world it’s easy to understand as it’s kind of our world but not our world at the same time. I can easily see how our world would end up being like that if 80% of the population had a superpower or alter as they call it.

I can easily see how our world would end up being like that if 80% of the population had a superpower or alter as they call it. Izuku is for me really similar to Naruto which I like even though it’s a common trope in shonen. At the beginning of the chapter I was thinking they were gonna do a “everybody think he doesn’t have power but he’s actually the stronger” but by the end of the chapter I’d be quite disappointed if they did that, so I’ve no idea for what’s next.
Also I don’t understand 2 things :
- Why do people act like vilains if they want to be super heroes ?
- How can any state can provide enough money for all those super hero ?
I now get why one of my coworkers thinks I'm like Midoriya. We both have extra bones in our feet, and we don't know when to quit. Suffice to say Midoriya is a fun relatable character who won't let what others see as weakness stop him from chasing his dreams.

Perhaps because of the..."I totally agree with your comparison of how Izuku and Bakugou were treated when they were younger due to their quirks and agree that that has a lot to do with their attitudes as middle-schoolers. (Bakugou was never told he can't do anything...unlike Izuku.)
I think another interesting comparison is how the first chapter sets up how they respectively think of All Might. Izuku sees him as a someone who will save someone no matter what (an with a smile no less, so that the person is put at ease), while it seems that Bakugou only sees All Might's status and power. They both look up to him, but their perspectives are totally different. I'm interested in seeing how that will change for both of them in the future, especially as All Might becomes weaker.
I think the world building was pretty good, not terribly detailed but detailed enough to understand the world. I would rather have something like what this manga has, short and sweet introduction rather than a long-winded explanation of the entire history.
I think the world building was pretty good, not terribly detailed but detailed enough to understand the world. I would rather have something like what this manga has, short and sweet introduction rather than a long-winded explanation of the entire history. I also feel, as ridiculous as 80% of the world possessing super powers, I think it does a good job of making it seem, normal, I guess? Not too far in the reach of our suspended disbelief, which I like.
As far as Izuku/Midoriya goes, (I don't really know what to call him at this point, because it's a mixture of these two and what I believe to be a nickname. Also, I'm fairly new to manga, so if there's a rule of thumb to follow as to what to address them as, that would be appreciated) I think he's kind of your everyday fanboy. He's super obsessed with all the heroes, takes notes on them, and has his mind set on the dream that he will one day become one, despite the fact that he is quirkless. He's just this loveable character with a dream, which is, dare-I-say a bit trope-y. if that's the right expression to use. I don't really like to pick on stuff for sharing some common themes because hey, it's hard to come up with something totally original.
I also felt really bad for Izuku (I'll call him that for now) at the beginning. Even though Katsuki had a lesser quirk, that still meant he thought he was the bigger person and thought he had the right to pick on Izuku. I almost cried when he suggested he kill himself. I have to hand it to him; everyone had told him he would never be a superhero, never achieve his dream, but he kept pushing forward, even though he himself might've thought it hopeless sometimes. So yeah, I think I'll be rooting for him for the duration of the manga.
Some people are comparing their rivalry and Izuku himself to Naruto, and the rivalry referring to Naruto vs Sasuke. I see the similarities, so I agree but also disagree. I do see the same kind of head to head, but Naruto and Sasuke constantly butt heads from both ends. Izuku just kind-of rolls with the punches that Katsuki swings at him, with no real pushback.
As far as the 'I'm semi-hopeless but I still believe I can do it' trope goes, and therefore the comparison of Izuku to Naruto goes, I find them still a little bit different. I feel like Naruto comes off as more arrogant, being like 'I WILL BE THE BEST HOKAGE', kind-of announcing for the world, but Izuku is more timid. If there was a comparison to be made, I would say Naruto to Katsuki more. Even though he still has a quirk, he still isn't the best, but has just as much snarkiness. (I'm not sure I'm the best one here to be making these comparisons because I'm only a few volumes into Naruto, but anyway, that's my take!
I don't have many predictions, but here are a couple of questions about the next few chapters and throughout the series:
-Will Izuku change his opinion on being a superhero and the heroes he idolizes?
-Will he lose some of the innocence he has as he starts to see further into the world?
-Will Katsuki have a devastating backstory and reasoning for his actions towards Izuku that makes us root for him, and therefore not knowing what to do with ourselves?
- Will All Might grow weaker still and have an arc of some kind?
- Will All Might play the role of, dare-I-say, Uncle Ben?
-Who is this Mt.Lady and what will her role be in future volumes?(because that 'debut' was way too convenient)
Really enjoying it so far and I can't wait to see what happens next!

That's because it's his last name. Since the story takes place in Japan that's the common way to address characters. If the story took place elsewhere it could be different. As you brought it up in your post I'll use Naruto as an example: Naruto is set in a fictional world so the characters go by their first names.
Interesting thing about the Naruto Sasuke comparison is that Horikoshi has actually stated that Kishimoto (the creator of Naruto, in case you only ever saw the show) was a big inspiration for his series and even gave him advice during a later arc. I personally find the dynamic between Midoriya and Bakugou far more interesting (especially later in the series) than in Naruto. But that's mainly because I hated Sasuke and thought Naruto was annoying throughout the duration of the show.
Cool first chapter. I love the concept of being the one powerless person in a world of superheroes. I've read lots of rivalry storylines before and sometimes I like them and sometimes they don't work at all so I'm interested to see where the rivalry between Izuku and Kacchan goes. I anticipate that Izuku will get some sort of quirk so I'm curious to see what it will be. Also I like All Might. I don't know why but I found him hilarious. The art is nice and I'm interested to see what more prolonged battle scenes will look like. Overall it is off to a good start.

It's honestly so rare for me to go into a manga knowing nothing about it. I tend to be drawn to the already super long series that everyone knows the basis for or the series I read in high school.

I tend to be drawn to the already super long series that everyone knows the basis for or the series I read in high school. With that being said, I am enjoying this so far. It's definitely different. I can see the great setup for the world, but it was a tad bit confusing? I got lost in the characters, trying to figure everything out while still adjusting to the new world.
However, I am looking forward to seeing how Izuku Midoriya becomes a hero and how All Might possibly helps him. I am just in like with this manga so far, even if I don't continue on with the series after this.
I don't read much manga, so I don't have a lot to compare. But I think Izuku looks sweet, and he has a valuable dream.
I don't read much manga, so I don't have a lot to compare. But I think Izuku looks sweet, and he has a valuable dream. I kinda felt bad for people living in this world, too, because I keep thinking about people like Izuku and don't have a quirk, and it's like living in minority.
In a general, I really liked the world building, but what caught my attention was Izuku's mother taking him to the doctor to talk about the fact that he hadn't developed a quirk. Like, you know when you are a child and you can't see properly, so you go to the ophthalmologist? In this world, you go to the doctor to check your quirks, and I feel like it's a nice way to throw us in the world and feel like it could actually happen.
And I really like the art style too! I think it's funny.
It’s been a while since I’ve read manga. Usually I flu through them but now I’m taking my time to really appreciate the art and story.

I love the artstyle!
I really enjoyed this first chapter. The history of the quirks is super interesting to me, so that amplified my liking of this chapter.
I don’t really like Bakuguo that much, as of now, but I can see him being a really complex character. All Might is pretty interesting, too, so I’m hoping to see more of him as well.
I’ve been reading the comments here, and I agree that Bakuguo and Midoriya will must likely have that ”Naruto vs Sasuke” type of rivalry when they get to UA. Personally, I really liked that rivalry in Naruto, so I’m excited.
I can’t wait to see the other students, and the school in general.
//I apologize if my English is bad. English isn’t my native language but I’m trying my best.
Also, I’m super nervous about my comment... usually I just read other people’s comments and am too scared to post my own.
Unlike some of the readers here, I am very familiar with My Hero Academia. I've kept up to date with the manga a long time and am impressed to see so many of you getting into it. Special thank you to Jesse for managing to organize the Manga Monday Book Club.

Special thank you to Jesse for managing to organize the Manga Monday Book Club. For the purposes of this, I went back and reread the first chapter. My perspective will differ to many of yours, as I understand a lot about the direction of the manga and have some larger theories that really kicked off as far back as this chapter.
The author, Kohei Horikoshi, was inspired by many aspects of western culture. He is an avid fan of many of the superheroes and villains we know in pop culture today. He's also big into Star Wars. Throughout My Hero Academia, you'll see Horikoshi throw nods to several other manga and icons in pop culture.
This chapter, in particular, does a brilliant job at establishing some ground rules about the series. While there are still some obvious questions to be answered, we do learn about the quirk system, meet our protagonist in Izuku Midoriya and learn about the society in that world.
In fact, the most telling moment of the entire chapter takes place in the final frame, when Midoriya says that "this is the story of how I became a great hero," already giving us an insight into the direction that this story takes.
I've had a lot of fun reading these replies from newcomers and I look forward to what everyone else has to say over the remainder of the volume.
The ending was an emotional moment for me because midoriya had been told his whole life he was never going to be able to become a hero so when all might told him "you can become a hero" midoriya would have finally found someone who believed in him after all the years of him being told he was no good. I read the weekly chapters so I already know what will happen so I can't really make any predictions.

I absolutely love this world. I wish we could live in a world with super powers or "quirks" so to say. This world would make living every day to day life a lot more fun. Even though the government still doesn't know what to do about these quirks, I love the structure of the world and should be a great world to build a story in.

Even though the government still doesn't know what to do about these quirks, I love the structure of the world and should be a great world to build a story in. Izuku's character is just so precious. He's so full of hope and is just so determined to reach his dream. Right now Izuku kinda seems like a very over emotional character which could possibly be annoying in the future. Although I can't really blame him. I would probably react the same if I were in his shoes.
Considering I have watched the anime, I can't make any predictions as to what will happen.
I did re-read the first chapter a few times since I was trying to read an e-version which is never successful for me. I understand the world enough to just go for the ride. I never find the worlds are overly complicated and they don't really need to be explained since my opinion on mangas is that they are focused more on the characters than the larger world around. (I am new to mangas so if there are ones with detailed world-building I'd be delighted to hear about them)

I don't think it will be pleasant for him but I need him to stop crying all the time, especially whilst smiling! The drawings are actually making me feel uncomfortable.
Prediction-wise; development of the relationship between All-Might and Izuku.
As this is a reread for me, I feel like I don’t have too much to add, but I think this chapter does a good job of establishing the world and the characters.

The way the panels and pages are laid out also works really well for telling the story. The action scenes are a little lacking, though.
That’s pretty much my non-spoilery thoughts.
I've finished my first manga chapter ever and this is out of my comfort zone for sure, but as I want to explorer manga and graphic novels this year this club comes perfectly for me :)

That's what I think.
I don’t have much to add to everything that’s already been said besides that I think calling everyone’s different powers ‘quirks’ is ADORABLE and gives the world such a fun vibe despite the flaws in its society!

This has been my first manga reread (but the umpteenth rewatch of the anime episode), and I really enjoyed after getting caught up with the manga. What made me love the series Midoriya's character. He the heart of a hero and yet the overthinking and overemotional mind for it to also be his flaw as well. I almost forgot how much I hated Bakugo in the beginning until this reread. It is fun being on the other end seeing how far Midoriya, Bakugo, and even All Might to an extent change because of each other.

I think that the world is very interesting. I’ve only watched a little of the anime and this is my first time reading the manga, so nothing has been spoiled for me yet. I’d be interested to know what year this is set in, and how the introduction of quirks effected the world and it’s technological development (or even like disease research). I can empathize with Izuku in that I have often felt like I wanted to do something more with myself, something that I don’t have the resources or skills to do. I love the ending of this chapter, and the allusion to him becoming the greatest hero ever. (Also, my copy of the manga had an authors note about how the was author focusing on making something fun and not something that might be an instant phenomena, which I think is really neat)

Just finished the first chapter and I’ve never read this manga before. I’ve seen bits and pieces of the anime and read other manga so I’m pretty comfortable with the formatting and art style already.

As for the world building, I’m looking forward to seeing how much the strength of quirks affects position in society. (Like, the high school setting and maybe how a superhero type job works within an 80% superpowered world?) I like how concise the explanation was, as Gloria already mentioned. I much prefer “experiencing” the world as much as possible over a written explanation.
Definitely rooting for Midoriya and looking forward to seeing his dynamic with All Might develop and how he deals with Bakugo once he gains more confidence. Love the fanboy aspect of his character and I think all his crying just makes him more endearing and unique.
I want to point out how well the first chapter sets up the hero’s journey for Midoriya. The call to action is becoming a hero. The refusal of the call is actually the fact that he is quirkless. He can’t answer the call. Then he meets All Might aka the master. In the first chapter the first part of the hero’s journey is completed.

You have All Might apologize to Midoriya which creates a world where professional heroes are not infallible.
Midoriya answers the call when no one else does.
And Bakugo did not make explody hands at the end of the chapter when talking to Midoriya...no matter how painful it was for him.
I just love Deku's origin. I love that he has such an underdog story with him not having a quirk but still believing that he can be a hero. I love that Al might is giving him lessons, and I love how unconventional Aizwawa is and how him and Al might are constantly agreeing to disagree. I really love the author's notes when it comes to the sketching. it's been fun to read that commentary.

Overall there is good world building in chapter one. I think it’s cool that only 80 percent of the population has quirks and it’s considered normal. I really like Izuku Midoriya’s character. He believed in himself when no one else did. He always wanted to be a hero and now he has a chance to be one.

One thing I truly like about the manga is that they don't spend a lot of time this first chapters going into details about the origin of the hero world. It's simply one day a weird glowing baby was born and now almost everyone is like weird in some way so it's become normal. Got it? OK now lets move on to the story! I don't think right now we need to know any more because it's about Midoriya and his journey. It's the world we are going to see through his eyes that matters.

well I've seen the show so I know most of what happens but I loved the manga since it was to the point and still told the story well in this part
