Looking for name of a book. I thought it was called the inspectors manual or something to that effect but can't find it. Its written a bit like the hitch hikers guide is about a man who's job is as an inspector and he lives his life by this guide but then gets a job that makes him start questioning this. I remember him having an umbrella and walking around a small town for hours getting nowhere. Hoping someone can help.

Ta. Read it approx 3 years ago. Fiction set somewhat british but not explicitly.
Was it a fantasy novel - like Hitchhikers Guide? What did the man do, what kind of jobs? You say he's an inspector, do you mean like police or someone who checks things out? And do you think this was written for adults or maybe YA or kids?
Is it perhaps The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry?
