I listened to an interview between Joan Rivers and Pamela Stephenson Connolly the other day. Pamela is a trained clinical Psychologist.

It revealed a tortured soul in Joan Rivers.

I wonder why so many great comics are so afflicted.

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments I'm not even sure it's just comedians. As Marc said, creative types often seem to suffer from depression, or have mental health issues. It's almost like there's a price to be paid for the talent or the vision.

see I don't buy that, that artists are more represented in mental illness statistics than say dentists, housewives or proctologists. But what artists do have is an ability to broadcast it through our art, so that it seems we are more represented, because we are able to publicise it more through our work in a way proctologists and dentists can't.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments And of course if an actor, comedian or politician have mental health problems it gets on the news. The local dentist is unlikely to attract the attention of the media.

M.A. Comley (melcom) Aww... loved Joan Rivers, will definitely be checking out this book. You're right, Simon, there seems to be a never-ending list of tortured souls in the world of comedy. I think it's a release mechanism for them to turn to comedy.

I'll definitely miss her unique brand of wit that's for sure. R.I.P. Joannie. :-(

Marc Nash (sulci) | 4313 comments reminds me, I made a video "Flat Punchline" about an acidic old stand up comic in his dotage
