I'll try to work on it this week.

Thanks for offering, but seeing you are a new?/inexperienced librarian: this is not the project to start with. Please start with easier requests first, where you are sure about the changes that have to be made, and how to make them according to GR policy, as explained in the Librarian Manual.

There are many, many valid profiles, due to different spelling/transliteration. The valid profiles (= a version of the author name as it is on the cover) (should) have a link to the main Leo Tolstoy profile.
Note: there are profiles that might be a shorter form of the author name that is completely included in a profile with a longer form of the author name, but I've deliberately kept them apart. My primary argument for that: it's a lot of work for authors with this many profiles, and it can be confusing for GR users/librarians which name should be on an edition. Leo Tolstoy as primary author, and name as written on cover as secondary author.
I'm still working on combining books on the Leo Tolstoy profile.
It's done for now, although new editions are probably being imported right now. And I wouldn't be surprised when there are even more profiles for this author.
Also good to know, Leo Tolstoy had a son, also called Leo/Lev: Lev Lvovich Tolstoy

Great to know! Thanks.

You undoubtedly are correct in thinking that there are more profiles lurking undetected. But I, for one, have no intention of looking for them and hope not to come across any inadvertently.
Thanks too for the information about the son.

I can understand that a librarian, a volunteer, might not wish to take on the project, but is there a mechanism to refer those types of issues for GR staff to do?
