No I am not familiar with that. Mythology has never interested me much. The whole concept of the Valkyrie seems too far fetched to me.
I’ve read quite a few fantasy novels where Valkyrie were featured and each time they showed up as highly skilled and formidable. I liked that it was used here because it fit.
I wouldn’t be surprised if some crazy elements did do something like this.

What is the advantage that they are women?
Men tend to underestimate a female, even when they shouldn't. I don't think a program like this could really exist, but it makes a really great fiction plot.
I'm not much into mythology or fantasy.
Here’s what Wikipedia has to say:
“In Norse mythology, a Valkyrie is one of a host of female figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live. Selecting among half of those who die in battle (the other half go to the goddess Freyja's afterlife field Fólkvangr), the valkyries take their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters"). When the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens and sometimes connected to swans or horses.”
To answer your question, Laura, it wasn’t their gender that made them formidable. It was just based on the mythology about Valkyries. They were shrewd, skillful and could be ruthless. I’ve seen them show up in at least three paranormal romance series that I follow.

Thanks for the info, I didn’t recall ever hearing that term before.
I always thought of Valkyrie as a fierce, female warrior. As the name for our female Special Ops group, it fits.
Another interesting tidbit is there was a movie where a group of Nazis were going to attempt to assassinate Hitler during WWII. It's based on a true story and was called the Valkyrie Project. Interesting point was that it was a group of military men who were going to take control of Germany.

My hubby is an historian. We watch a lot of documentaries (I’ve come to love) and war movies (me, not so much).
