Ann (annrumsey) | 16982 comments What did you think of The Drop? Spoilers welcome!

BarryP (barrypz) | 3502 comments I have always loved Lehane's work, and while I enjoyed this one, it did not have the depth of his recent work. Treat it as a novella and you will be much happier.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16982 comments The Drop read like a screen play to me, especially in the beginning. I didn't dislike it, but agree it is lightweight fare with some interesting characters more in a novella vein. It certainly could be read in one sitting though I stretched it out to two.
I did get invested in what might happen to the dog, and Nadia. The mystery of Bob's past added some dimension and picturing James Gandolfini as Marv and Noomi Rapsce as Nadia added to my reading enjoyment. I found myself interested in what the movie might look like for the setting, though imagine a borrowed digital or DVD copy will be adequate for that curiosity.

Margie | 1 comments Ann, I probably don't qualify to comment here because I saw the movie instead of reading The Drop, but... I really liked the movie and it had that dark undercurrent that I always enjoy in Lehane stories. Most fascinating was the way the layers peeled away from each character revealing who they were. The movie kept me on the edge of my seat! Well done!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16982 comments Margie: Of course you qualify to comment! And even if you didn't always qualify, the book was released as a companion to the movie. Good to know you enjoyed it, and that the character development and layers played well on the screen too.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9510 comments I have to say I loved this book. It was short so couldn't be the character study that his longer works are, but I thought the bleak atmosphere and the turns of plot more than made up for that. I guess I just love me some Lehane and Boston.

What Margie said about the movie summarizes some of what I liked about the book. When I watch the movie the surprises may be gone but I will enjoy feasting my eyes on Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini. Although the brief clip of Gandolfini I heard on Fresh Air just brought to mind Tony Soprano.
