Did anybody see the sad news that Aussie author Steph Bowe passes away this week? She was only in her 20's.

How sad Sharah, she obviously didn't receive the bone marrow transplant she was waiting for. She was so positive that she would improve and beat the cancer. Shocking!
I just read Rob’s review for The Book Thief (great review, Rob!) and it prompted me t look at my own...Ugh, I read it back in the early days when I was only rating and not really reviewing books consistently. So I’ll never know why I gave it 4 stars.
But the reason I wanted to comment on it is that I reckon it is the most widely read amongst my GR friends. Despite its popularity, I was genuinely surprised how many of the people that I interact with have read it. The ones that haven’t tend to stand out! (Yes, a few have it still on TBR.)
Is there a book amongst your own GR friends that almost everyone has read?
Until life takes on some semblance of normality I think I will be confining myself to good, light uplifting books.Happy for recommendations of such books.
My other reading at this time will be, as usual, my bible.
I’m not sure if this is the right place to post it but I’m hoping someone here might know the answer - I have multiple copies of some books on kindle (mainly from Netgalley - sometimes they don’t seem to download and next thing there is 5 copies sitting there). Does anyone know the best way to clean up my kindle? (Not just the downloaded books but those in the cloud too) also now that it is linked to goodreads sometimes when my mum finished a book (she is logged into my app) it shows up on my read list on goodreads. Is there a way to turn this off?? Sorry this was a long one thanks for your help
Firstly Bec you need your internet turned OFF on your kindle unless you're downloading. It drains your battery when it's on, but also immediately links to goodreads and records the book as read before you get a chance to do anything.
For removing books from your kindle, if it's the same as mine, do "remove from device ". It's still in the cloud but you don't see it until you want to. Removing from the cloud..I don't know that answer, someone with more techno knowledge will have to answer that one.

Quickest and easiest would be to connect it to a PC, navigate to the Kindle, then find the Documents folder where all your books will be. You can Ctrl+click to select multiple books to delete. If you don’t have access to a PC, you can delete them individually directly from the Kindle. The model might determine what method you can use. If it’s a touchscreen model, just tap and hold from the home screen and choose the menu option to delete from the device.
You can manage your cloud books from the Amazon website. ‘Manage Content and Devices’ I think. It will bring up a list of your books and you can delete from there if you really need to.
Andrea is correct and if you want to delete your Netgalley books from the cloud ie to disappear for ever, then there is a drop down box in manage your device and contents....Netgalley books are classified as docs, books are the ones through Amazon.I don’t have my Kindle connected to Goodreads, so cant help you there.
Hope that helps a little
Thanks heaps - that will be another project to add to my list while stuck at home (my actual kindle is one of the old ones not touch screen but not keyboard either) mainly use it on mine or mums ipad (going to screen shot this so I don’t loose it)
With isolation I have been downloading ebooks to my laptop from Amazon - mostly titles that have been on my TBR list for some time. Usually I download a sample first, and twice now the sample has had a TOC (read chapters) attached, When I go ahead and buy the book this feature disappears. How do I resurrect a complete TOC?Cheers people
No idea Alex. Not sure what you mean as I haven't stuck it. I'd suggest you go to the Librarian group and pose the question :) Good luck.
Brenda wrote: "No idea Alex. Not sure what you mean as I haven't stuck it. I'd suggest you go to the Librarian group and pose the question :) Good luck."Thanks Brenda. Beginning to wonder if "a sample" relates to paperback rather than e-book - though it's my experience that a linked table of contents in a prerequisite to publishing an e-book. Cheers.

I use a kindle and have read some samples but never noticed if the TOC disappears or not. There are a few Kindle groups on here, and I'd be interested to know if you find out what's happened.
Hey everyone! I just recently came across an online book store called Booktopia (pretty much exactly the same as Book Depository except Booktopia is an Australian based company). With everything going on at the moment it might be nice to support some Australian jobs by buying from here? (obviously don't have to as some of the books are slightly more expensive than buying from other stores)
They also have a newsletter which includes lots of bookish things including new Aussie book recommendations. You can check out one of the newsletters here: https://booktopia.goodreadingmagazine...

They are good Lily, and unlike Amazon, you can easily keep your digital books separately on a computer or device, without worrying if your Kindle library might be erased.
Brenda wrote: "You're new on the scene Lily. I've been buying from Booktopia for years...they're good too 😊"I must be very new! never knew they existed until a few days ago.
Brenda wrote: "And... if you connect to Booktopia through booko.com.au you get free delivery :)"Oooo good to know for the 'real' books!
My friend here in Melbourne sent me a link to this documentary. I contacted a bookish friend in the US about it and she had an at home watching party with another friend recently. It's being released to cinemas here (if we ever get there) in July.https://www.booksellersmovie.com/home/

OK this one's a doozie. Started reading The Night Agent by Matthew Quirk - hard copy, 424 pages. Got the iSBN right, and what happens: the Good reads blurb is in Russian. How do I get it switched to English?
You know we have a librarian thread for these issues Alex ;) I'll fix it :)
Is your link to the one you want changed? Because that blurb is in English.

Not sure we are looking at the same thing. Meanwhile, I cut and pasted it into Google translate to get the English version: now I just have to convert Cyrillic to western script so I can work on my Russian, which is limited to Vashe zdorov'ye!
Hey, it's changed back again. This is what I got the first time: Политически трилър в духа на Джон Гришам и Дейвид Балдачи
Питър Съдърланд е перфектният агент от ФБР, който никога не е нарушавал нито едно правило. Той е доброто момче, приковано към секретна телефонна линия в Белия дом по цели нощи. Стриктният му и самотен живот се състои в това да чака позвъняване. И една нощ то се случва. От отсрещната страна е разтреперената млада жена Роуз. Тя е неволно набъркана в мрежа от руски шпиони, които действат на територията на Щатите.
Your link goes to the ebook where the blurb is English. For some reason the hardback edition blurb is in Russian.
Do you get frustrated trying to remove stickers from your book covers? I know I do. A little while back TripFiction.com asked its Facebook followers for tips on how to do this successfully, and they've just collated the responses into a blog post.https://www.tripfiction.com/those-pes...
Do you have a favourite method that's not included?
Thanks for that Andrea. I use sticky tape to lift it by dabbing it on top of the residue until it's all gone :)
I don't have too many issues with stickers - I've found recently most of them peel off quite easily thankfully!

Interesting, thanks Andrea. I remove what I can then use a cotton bud with a little turpentine on it.Question for all of you who receive books from publishers. My Student Book Club at work want to run a few competitions. I thought I might try to get a few YA books to give as prizes. Obviously we don't want to be spending a lot of money on these so I am wondering how I might get ARCs or complimentary copies. Would we need to be prolific reviewers as that's not our point or purpose?
Thanks for your advice.

Hey Diana,
I would recommend contacting the publishers themselves and seeing what they can offer! They occasionally offer us books for giveaways so you might get lucky. :)
Exactly what I was going to say Diana. Contact your publishers of choice and explain the circumstances. I'm sure they'd be happy to help.
Hi All, Not quite sure where this fits, but I've just launched a podcast interviewing some of the world's best authors about which books they recommend in their own genres.
So far I've done Crime with Chris Hammer, Lit Fic with Brooke Davis, Fantasy with Jeremy Lachlan, Horror with Alan Baxter and more.
If it sounds like something you might enjoy, have a listen on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...
or at http://anchor.fm/genrewars
Cheers

Wow. Totally agree, Brenda. Can't believe people still do this.

Welcome Tim, if you could go here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... - and create your own thread, you can post the above and anything else you'd like to as things go on. Having it only here means it'll get lost among the posts - having your own thread means it'll get more attention :)

I was already across many of the books discussed with Chris Hammer, but I did add one to my TBR (Under Your Wings by Tiffany Tsao).
But I agree with Brenda, that you should create a new thread for your podcast to attract listeners and promote new episodes.
Congrats, and good luck going forward.

Your podcast looks super. I've subscribed and am going to binge listen on the weekend. Thanks for the heads up.
Hello everyone! Are there any readers here from Tasmania? Specifically in your 20’s? Looking to make some local friends to read and chat books together with. I have also made a Facebook book club if anyone is interested (or if you know of anyone who would be). As most of this is based online due to social distancing, it doesn’t really matter if you aren’t living in Tasmania currently. https://www.facebook.com/groups/36467...
Welcome Meredith :) Why don't you add the same post to the Tasmania thread (further down the group's page) and even the Chat thread. I know we have some Tasmanian members, but I'm not sure if they're YA or not :) Happy reading..
Just a query. Do you include audiobooks in your GR Reading Challenge? I'm a bit ambivalent about them being 'real books' but I can't wait for the third installment in Will Dean's crime series and its only available as an audiobook at my local library.

I count them! But I've only read 1.5 so far lol. It takes as much concentration as reading the text for me so I think it counts!
