Wrong page count

I used the scan function to add this book to my list and the page count that came up with it says 454, but the copy I scanned has only 391, 394 with acknowledgements. There is no other edition with the correct number of pages to switch to either.

The edition I borrowed from the library says it is the first edition published in February 2010 by St. Martin’s press, hardcover. As far as I know there is a listing that should match, but the page numbers do not.

I’ve started a new book by the same author and have encountered the same problem. The copy I have from the library clearly has 320 pages. Matches the description in the edition on goodreads, except it’s listed as having 416 pages. Why such large discrepancies for both books? This one is ISBN 9780345467522 or 0345467523

Page counts are often imported from publishers or Amazon pre-publication, and may be estimates (or just guesses). This is especially likely to be the case if the page count is a multiple of 16 (the size of a common size of "signature", or group of book pages printed on a single large sheet of paper and then bound).
