ABANDONED. sci-fi: red-haired boy survivor of ruling family runs from evil empire knight

Sci-fi book probably written before 1960. Summary: A council of knights protects/rules planets. An evil knight takes on the costume of old Roman - helm, breastplate, cloak, etc - kills all other knights at Council meeting. Only survivor is a red-haired boy. Only members of this one family have red hair in all the planetary system along with a special power/force that enables them to lead. Boy is rescued by female space pilot and taken to obscure planet to be trained in his powers by an elderly retired knight. Evil knight and his troops search the system for the boy.
Read around 2000, but bought in used bookstore. Old book.
