Rita Augustyn (ritaaugustyn) | 1 comments Hello! I am currently looking for an editor/proofreader for my science fiction novel. I am a new author and am on a budget. The novel is about 64,500 words, and I plan to self-publish. I have had a couple of people read through the novel and provide me with content feedback. I have self-edited the book but need a fresh set of eyes on my manuscript. I am hoping to stay within the $250ish range. I will appreciate any feedback regarding the structure of the story and thorough proofreading. I have heard of beta readers but am not comfortable with the idea. I do think it is very useful but my main concerns are about the protection of my ideas. I know editing should be the last step but I do think that my book is ready for editing/proofreading. I have been working on it off and on for over six years. I do have an advanced degree but it is not in any field related to writing fiction, so I will be grateful for any assistance. Publishing a book has been a long time dream of mine. I am very easygoing and am a huge fan of constructive criticism. Thank you for your time and consideration. Take care!

I am a recent graduate looking to get into the editing field and am willing to edit at a negotiable fee. I have been thinking of charging by page: 1 page = $1 per sweep. If you're interested please email me at whyforesandwhatnots@gmail.com to discuss details.

Yours,

P.N. Elrod (pnelrod) | 90 comments Let me put you at ease regarding betas -- they are NOT going to steal your ideas.

New writers fear that, always have, but plagiarists steal from finished, published works, usually big names. I can cite a few cases, but you can google for that if you like.

A beta reader is only going to help you. The more you have the better. I had three for my first book and they all fixed on a single character who screwed up the pacing. I deleted the character. No one missed her.

Before you lash out with cash, put a toe in the water and get help from the Forums of Absolute Write. It is a safe, troll-free board for writers, many of them are pros in the industry paying it forward.

It is free to join.

https://absolutewrite.com/forums/foru...

You can offer to be beta for others on this board, which will only help improve your own craft. I always become sharper about my own work when I critique others.

However long you have worked on the book, you can never have too many eyes on it. I hope you will get past this all too common fear of idea stealers and take a brave step.

This is something I learned from Joe Bob Briggs, the Drive In Movie King.

Nobody is going to steal your idea.

Everyone who is about to write a book is afraid that they will tell someone (like me) the topic, and six months later Doubleday will be bringing out a 200,000 first printing on the same topic, but written by Norman Mailer, and the aspiring writer’s chance for celebrity will be dashed.

Listen up. You don’t get widely plagiarized until you’re widely published--and then it doesn’t matter. Trust me on this.

I have been in pro publishing for more than 30 years now and he is absolutely right on this. :)
