Trying to Remember a Series

Are you referring to to Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter? Inspector Morse is an opera loving CID inspector in Oxford.
Thanks for your response, Diane.I don't recognize that author, though the Insp Morse character seems familiar. I think there was one last book in the series after the death of the lead character and his partner took over some of the cases. That may even have spawned a whole new series.
I know why it seems familiar. Isn't there a TV series by that name?

I've heard that's good, Leslie!
Endeavor is good but it is different -- the plots are darker, more delving into abuse etc. Lewis is more like the original Morse show in its type of mysteries and the mood of the show.
Karlyne, the Lewis series isn't that nasty (bgok! bgok!) - what I love about it is, it utilizes Oxford more than the Morse series did, e.g. with an episode about the Inklings, & some on theatre, books, & art; & both partners are fascinating & make valuable & contributions.I heard a rumor more episodes are in the works - anyone have info on this?
Fantastic! I love the Lewis series. It took a while to get used to Endeavour but I do think it is a good series.
Well, Laurel, I wonder if we answered your question. If I understood correctly, you didn't seem to think Morse was the series. I can't think of another where the main dude is killed off
No, I'm afraid Morse isn't the one I was thinking of. It was a series my mother introduced me to. She loved British authors. I'll just have to keep thinking and searching. But thanks everyone. I'll let you know if I figure it out.
Laurel, didn't Agatha Christie kill off Hercule Poirot? And Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the same with Sherlock Holmes? Or are you looking for a more obscure series?
Ann wrote: "I really can’t warm to Endeavour. Preferred the older Morse. Anyway good news for Lewis fans. They are currently filming a new series and there will be six new episodes. More info on this link.htt..."
I am with you Ann. I loved the Morse series - it is currently rescreening in NZ. But just couldn't get into Endeavour. Hope they are filming some more Lewis....
Laurel, would it be the Taggart series? Jim Taggart gets killed off, and the series continues without him...It is a great series, they started rescreening it in Nz right from the beginning earlier this year.
No, pretty sure it wasn't Taggart but I'll check it out anyway. Diane, I didn't think it was that obscure at the time but apparently it is. I always did love a puzzle.
Eureka!! I have found it!The author is Graham Hurley and his detective is Joe Faraday.
What was funny is that I was searching the website of the used bookstore where I might have returned it. My son had just walked in and I had asked him months ago to see if he coud find anything from this author. I just asked him if he remembered the author's name and of course, he said no. He'd no sooner turned around and walked out of the room than I found it. Whoo-hoo!
Now we will all have to give him a try. Perhaps you could recommend the first in the series as a group read.
The first book in the series is Turnstone, but it appears I haven't actually read it. I picked up several books from my mom when she passed away and this author was among them. I'm not even sure now which ones I have read but I'm going to start at the beginning (even though I know how the series ends and wanted to throw the book at the wall when I finished it.)
Thanks for this information. I'm always looking for new authors. I'll pretend I don't know that the detective dies in the end.

I am currently looking for new series authors and I can't remember the author who killed off his (depressed policeman)lead character. I'm pretty sure it was a British series. I don't want to end up investing in a new series if I've already read them and know how the series ends.
Can anyone help?
