Martin Dolan | 39 comments I don`t think any chapter should be any longer than necessary, especially the first one, because when reading `on the go` I like to finish a chapter before I have to put the book down.

BookEdits101 | 4 comments Hi Adrianne,

There's no right or wrong way to write a novel, and worrying about length etc at the first stage shouldn't overtake the writing of the story.

As a writer myself, I used to worry about the same issues, but over the years learnt that the most important thing to begin with is getting your story down on paper. Don't worry about the length (that will change with your story/later editing etc), don't worry about chapter headings and styles (that won't help create your story). A manuscript can go through several drafts before it resembles anything close to a finished book so worrying about length etc at such an early stage shouldn't overtake the actual writing phase. Read up on aspects of writing, such as point of view (POV), natural dialogue and narrative, and just write your story.

I hope that helps.
Jacqui
