Yes! I totally agree with you, Snapes so-called love for Lily seems borderline obsessive to me too!

I really hate the bad boy gets saved by an understanding good girl who loves him for who he is-trope. It ships stalking, controlling behaviour and jealousy as "romantic". This kind of relationships are toxic and possible dangerous, and if you meet a guy or a girl who stalks you, try to control you, what you do and who you talk to, you need to get out of that relationship.
- And yes, I do have the same issues with Edward and Bella in Twilight. Come on, she should clearly be with Jacob, who treated her as an equal, not a child who couldn't make her own decisions.

And, even though Snape did change his mind about Voldemort and deatheaters and the wizardworlds domination over muggles, he still was evil. "The world isn't split into good people and Deatheaters". In my books, Snape is still too dark to deserve complete redemption.

Julia | 179 comments I wonder if Snape's love would have ever matured had Lily survived? To eventually want her to be happy, even if she wasn't with him? After all, he was only 21 when he lost her. To lose the love of your life at that age would emotionally cripple anybody. Now, he was no saint before her death, but it is worth pondering if he was always destined to be bitter and alone.

message 53: by [deleted user] (new)

Um, again, can't we respect lily's choice? Snape only crossed over to the other side because Lily died, I mean, who knows if he would have renounced his ways fully even if Lily did choose him, really, Lily chose James, and I can't say I blame her.

message 54: by Julia (new)

Julia | 179 comments In all fairness, she did really care about Snape for a long time. Under different circumstances, I think he could have made her happy, and she knew that. She gave him chances for a long time, and that was completely her choice, even when her friends didn't care for him. I think it just shows that Lily was a kind person, even though her friendship with Snape ended up being painful in the end.

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, he really shouldn't have called her a mudblood.
I think that it was Snape's own fault though. In the pensieve, Lily had warned him about his Death Eater friends, and he had ignored her. If he had really wanted Lily, you would think he would recogize the signs. Although he was provoked, that is no excuse for his behavior. he could have just laughed it off instead of calling her a mudblood, an dI am sure things would have turned out differently.

message 56: by Julia (new)

Julia | 179 comments Snape loved Lily, but at his core, he just wasn't a nice person. Sure, he was eventually a *good* person, but "nice" and "good" are not interchangeable words. 😉

Perhaps that was what Lily saw in him all along? A "good" person, hidden behind a harsh exterior. After all, he came from an unhappy household, with parents who probably didn't offer him much love. Lily knew that from the start, but some emotional scars just don't heal in a person, hence the bitter Potions master we came to know.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

James and Lily. Snape and Lily would of had a very one sided relationship as Snape just wanted Lily for himself. James was, by no means perfect, but he loved her and died to save her and give their child a better life.

Same, but Lily never liked Severus back. But then again, Severus was a numbskull and called Lily a Mudblood

Princess Cordelia | 3 comments Lily was a character capable of making her own decisions, and she chose James.

message 63: by g.vee (new)

g.vee (gvesthetic) James and Lily. Severus Snape was not a nice character by far and he only changed his side for Lily. He had obsession over her and so much it seemed creepy. And Lily ended the friendship for good when Snape’s true personality was revealed when he called her slurs. He also had a choice to be on the good side and stand up for her. His friendship with Lily was a great opportunity for him to be a nice person and do something for her and muggle borns and most importantly prove slytherin not to be a bad house after all. Another thing that proves he didnt care in a good way for lily was that he didnt care and bullied her only ORPHAN child.

On the other hand, James was perfect for Lily. He liked her and it was obvious and never gave up but he did not cross lines. He waited patiently and did not give up because his love was true. He was not obsessed with lily. There love story was a real one, from enemies to friends, not like Snape’s, which was from friends to enemies. And most of all, Lily also liked him!

Shriya James and Severus both loved Lily in their own ways. James may have been a bully, but Snape was not entirely blameless.
James and Severus shouldn't have involved Lily in their rivalry, she's not a toy that they can fight over. She's her own person who is entitled to her own choice, and she chose James.
A lot of 'Snily' shippers attribute Snape's mean attitude towards the Golden Trio to his failed love life, which annoys me immensely. Severus Snape has a characterization beyond Lily. He chose to join Voldemort, he chose to tell him about the prophecy, he chose to be mean to Harry, Ron and Hermione. I can somewhat understand his behaviour towards Harry (even though he was a little too mean sometimes), but his attitude towards Ron, Hermione and Neville was plain spiteful. Even when he confessed to Dumbledore, he asked him to save Lily, not James and Harry (a one-year old baby at that time). His love for Lily was selfish. Whatever happened to him was a consequence of his choices. Having said that, he was a good man at heart. I certainly don't think Severus and Lily could have ever been a good couple. She saw him only as her best friend. Their friendship reminded me of Jo and Laurie from 'Little Women'. Unlike the usual, Wattpad cliche stories of best friends falling in love, their story is unique and redeems Snape (a little) as a person in the eyes of the reader.
James, initially, was an obnoxious bully. However, he did have his redeeming moments. He was a great friend and a good person, who only acted stupidly, expecting Lily to fall for his 'bad-boy' attitude (ugh). As he grew older, he did mature. He stopped bullying Snape and was a little more sensitive to others' feelings. He even rescued Severus from Remus' werewolf form, when he came to know about Sirius' stupid idea. This was the James that Lily fell in love with, and honestly, this James is extremely likable. Lily didn't change him, she just brought out the better side in him, like James bought out the fun, less serious side in her. Harry is a living proof of that. He has James' determination and loyalty, and Lily's honesty and kindness. Also, James died protecting Lily and Harry! He asked her to 'take Harry and run' while he held Voldemort off. That is love.
I love both James and Severus as characters, but I think James was the better man for Lily.

James grew up but Snape bullied Neville because if Neville had been chosen by Voldemort Lily would still be alive causing Snape to become Neville's worst fear

Carla (pikinina) It is a curious question. I choose James and Lily. James seemed to be a bully, he was truly in love with Lily and he did everything to protect his family. Snape was a misunderstood character, he had a bad childhood and I think he saw in Lily the only person who understood him deeply. I think that's why the felt for her. And even if he did love her and tried to protect Harry through the years in a twisted way, he also did bad things in the past. I believe that he would have done everything to protect Lily and Harry just like James did. In fact, I believe that Snape was a little twisted because of his childhood and his jelousy of everyone else.

Maddie (Taylor's Version) (maddiereadssometimes) James and Lily, Snape was a creep and a terrible person and Lily is smart, she picked James for a reason

taylor swift | 8 comments james and lily first of all james and snape both loved lily but lily loved james and if snape really loved her he would’ve been happy not even happy but respected lily and james and wouldn’t have held on to a schoolboy grudge and tortured harry he also cared more about his success then lily secondly you could tell by how when jk rowling talks about the picture of james and lily’s wedding how much she loved james i think snape only loved her because she was his first friend not as a real love and i think lily loved him as a brpther

Miriam | 3 comments First a disclaimer: I am yet to finish reading the books and rely mostly on the films.

But I think James and Lily because I imagine their characters had a stronger chemistry. It is very easy to see how Lily was important to Snape seeing the missery that followed her death, but people dont speak a lot about how important she was to James. James was cruel and a bully when they first met and I think she helped him become a better person and find another way. That fact only is a win to the world (because stop a bully and save hundreds, save a bullied and save only one). Not that this is anyway to pick your partner but it strengthens their story and the story around them.

Also, Snape's love feels, like many say, more like an obsession. Lily came down into his life like a Mother Teresa, a kind face among bullies, a light in the dark. It wasnt an equal relationship where they balanced each other out and challenged each other, like in the case of Lily and James. For that reason I don't see the same potential in a Snape/Lily romance. I think he should have settled for her friendship and worked on building himself up and finding someone else.

Really, I am more interested in the relationship between Snape and James and I wish they would have eventually made a truce and both found happiness - and that Lily wouldn't have been the definition of that.

This is one part of the story that I am very curious to learn more about as I dive into the book series!

Side note: they speak a lot about Harry having Lilly's eyes, but has anyone ever wondered where he got his dark black hair from..? A trait closely related to a certain someone. I'm just saying.

Julia | 179 comments @Miriam: It is said that Harry has James' appearance, including his hair. Although you're right that Snape also had that hair. Happy reading, I'm excited to hear your comments on the books!

Summer ♡ (summerlightwood) james and lily all the way. lily didn’t love snape the way he did. so I'd really prefer a couple who loves each other Instead of one who pity the other for unrequited love. and i just read the other comment where the person mentioned that snape's love for lily was an obsession because she came to his life as mother theresa. completely agree with that!! it seemed to me like an obsession and crush. you know fake it till you make it? he thought he liked Lily because She's the only one who treated him right, then she married someone else and he felt like "that should've been me" so he didn’t have the time actually realise it wasn’t actually the love he Thought he had for lily, It's something else completely. as an example - shawn mendes's love for camila lol. then lily died, he grieved for completely different reason. after all he did love lily, maybe not in the way HE think he does. It's just my opinion. i do like three of them individually but there's some people who think of lily as some kind of "bad, pathetic" human because she didn’t choose snape. like would u really want someone to be with another out of pity then live their rest the life depressed and not happy just because people blame you for the bullying happend to that person? :))

✧ hayley (the sugar bowl) ✧ | 59 comments Lily and Severus!!!!! James literally bullied her and was a jerk to everyone whereas Snape, although falling with the wrong crowd, loved her and regretted anything bad he ever did to her. He would have changed if she had only given him a chance. He spent the rest of his life loving her and protecting his child for he felt so bad he may have accidentally brought on her death. James was just a reckless, arrogant, obnoxious bully and I don’t understand why lovely Lily married him!

Luna (luna13) James and Lily obviously. Snily is better than Dramione as they actually had a foundation of friendship but it's still very questionable. In fanfiction where Snape wasn't his toxic self and went about things differently it would've been fine but in canon? No ways.
