The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides - October 2020 (previously read July 2019)
Will be reading this book in the end of June. Will update here under spoilers, so that I don't spoil anyone.
I'll join the discussion! I was on the waitlist too, Colleen, but it came in a few days ago. Just finishing up some other reads and will start it in 2-3 days.
Keep going Vivi! Wish I had this one to discuss with you. I love all the spoilers and find it motivating to want to see what the other person has to say while reading.
Kristie wrote: "Keep going Vivi! Wish I had this one to discuss with you. I love all the spoilers and find it motivating to want to see what the other person has to say while reading."Will do. I too find it so fun to share thoughts and opinions while reading the same book...especially in books like this (with mystery).
Will definitely take a look at your comments, when more people read this book and discuss it here.
Wow. This is the best suspense book I’ve read in some time. So glad we picked it! It’s up to the hype.
I finished the book a few days ago. Soooo good!My review was short and sweet as I was rushing out the door. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Nanci wrote: "Nice review, Vivi. I can't wait to discuss this with you all!"Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the book too :)
Nanci wrote: "Vivi wrote: "67% (part 3) "Nanci, be careful in your replies that the spoilers don't show up. In this comment above the part that was hidden in Vivi's spoiler is showing. When that happens please delete the spoilery stuff (as I did in this comment) or replace the text with [spoilers removed] just so no one else accidentally reads a spoiler. (I really wish the spoilers would just always stay hidden!) Thank you!
Thank you Kristi for letting me know about the spoilers. I am so sorry! It’s the first time I ever did a spoiler and I thought I did it correctly. I did see my comment said spoiler and noticed that in my reply afterwards it said spoiler removed, but I couldn’t see the actual words of the spoiler, so I thought it was ok. I sure don’t want to spoil it for anyone!

No worries, Nanci. You did the spoiler correctly. It's just that sometimes the reply to a spoiler can be tricky. Your spoiler isn't showing; it was Vivi's original spoiler that shows in your reply. I don't know why that happens. It is some weird Goodreads glitch where if a spoiler is a certain length it shows up in the reply instead of being changed to [spoilers removed], as it should be, and you need to change it yourself. I just wanted to let you know so you can watch for it in the future. I will link the comment I'm referring to below so you can see what I mean. If you can edit the comment to remove the spoiler part that would be good too.

I deleted comment 20. I hope that takes care of the issue. :0 If not, please let me know. That is odd how it works when you reply to a spoiler. I'll play it on the safe side from now on and not reply to any. I wondered if it had something to do with the app. The app gives me headaches, as it doesn't post words sometimes that I know I have typed on my phone, along with other issues. Maybe someday they'll get the glitches corrected. :)
Oh the app definitely has some issues. The missing words really bother me. This issue is not app related though. It has something to do with how long the spoilers you are replying to are. Sometimes they are hidden, sometimes not.I didn't mean to make you delete the comment. I like the discussion and replying to other's comments is great. That's why we're here, to discuss the books.
One idea, if you don't want to worry or have to delete the spoiler part is to skip hitting the reply button and just type something like, "Nanci, in reply to your 67% (part 3) comment." Then, we'll know what you are replying to and you can still add your spoilers because those worked perfectly. Please don't stop replying though. I'm sure Vivi appreciates someone reading and replying to her comments. I know I do when I take the time to write out my thoughts.
Kristie wrote: "Oh the app definitely has some issues. The missing words really bother me. This issue is not app related though. But, gotta be careful with the spoilers, so that they don't show and ruin other readers' experience.
Nanci, I think you just have to take a look at how what you wrote came out as (if the spoilers show) and edit your comment if needed be. No need to stop commenting or replying.
Have fun. Hope you enjoy your next read :)
I guess I'm still confused. Messages 18 and 19 both say spoilers removed, but I don't see the spoiler, so I'm not sure how others are seeing them. I don't mean that I won't discuss the book, I just don't feel confident that I'm going to do it the right way without giving anything away, but messing up the spoiler when I reply. Kristie, your idea of not hitting the reply button, but making reference to the post is a good idea so it can't be messed up.Also, I've never done one of these discussion threads before. How do we know when everyone on the thread is done reading the book, so that it can be openly discussed?
Nanci wrote: "I guess I'm still confused. Messages 18 and 19 both say spoilers removed, but I don't see the spoiler, so I'm not sure how others are seeing them. Your messages 18 and 19 are okay. We see the "spoilers removed".
Happy 4th of July to you (we don't celebrate it in my country).
We have a wonderfully diverse group on GR from all over the world, but thanks for your response! Some of my friends posted a funny to Facebook. It's a picture of George Washington and the caption is, "Have fun at work today, England!"I'm in the state of Virginia and it's currently pouring here. We usually go out on our boat on the lake to watch the fireworks, but it doesn't look too promising. Our grandkids are going to be bummed!
Happy 4th Nanci! Funny, one of my friends from England jokingly posted a meme that said, "Happy treason day." I guess it's all about perspective. lol I'm also in Virginia, right in your area. We are practically neighbors! My grandson is visiting and was also disappointed that the fireworks were cancelled.
We don't have a date for stopping spoilers. We just continue to use them. Occasionally, people will come back to the threads months later to comment.
Also, as Vivi mentioned, your messages 18 and 19 are fine. It's honestly not anything you did wrong. It's just some Goodreads glitch that has to do with the length of the original spoiler you are responding to. If you don't feel comfortable editing your replies to spoilers, just go ahead and reference them as we mentioned.
Kristie, what a coincidence that we live so close to one another. We're outside of Richmond. Yes, our grandchildren were actually crying they were so bummed.Ok, I'll just use spoilers to post my comments and then reference any posts that are replies.
"Happy treason day." Love it! Yes, most relationships are about perspective, for sure! hahaha!
This is the first book that I have read for the Monthly book club. I'm not exactly sure how the discussions work for this group. This book was so amazing! I cannot wait to talk about it. Do we have group discussions or am I supposed to write a review about it?

Hi Vallen! Welcome to the book discussion. Glad you're joining us. We have a discussion, but sometimes people choose to add a review as well. It's completely up to you how much you participate in the discussion. Just make sure to use spoiler tags when needed. If you look in the previous posts, there are quite a few spoiler tags already that you can click on to see other member's thoughts. You'll need to be on the actual site though. The app doesn't allow you to click on the spoilers.
My first time doing this too and I didn’t know the app doesn’t show spoilers. I’m gone until the end of the month traveling in Canada and I’m pretty much limited to the app. If I can’t see comments while I’m gone, I’ll catch up after we’re home. I hope you all are enjoying the book!
Kristi - thanks for sharing that you can only click on the spoilers on the web, not the app. I thought I was doing something wrong!
You’re welcome, Carol. Yes, you can open a browser on your phone and access Goodreads that way to read spoilers, but the app just blocks them. I’m not sure why.
This is not my typical genre; however, I couldn't put this book down, it was very suspenseful, and I didn't see the ending coming. I guess this by definition means it's a great thriller. Thanks to Vivi for the writing down your thoughts while reading! It was fun reading all your thoughts and doing a mental comparison to what I was thinking at the time.

Spoilers are actually pretty easy. You just type the following and remove all of the (5) periods. I put those in just so you can see it and it won't turn into an actual spoiler. Don't leave any extra spaces. <.spoiler.> Put the text you want to hide here. <./.spoiler.>
I read a lot of mystery/thriller books. It’s my favorite genre. So it’s very hard for a book to keep me guessing to the end and this one did. Even if I had some things figured out I definitely did not guess the whole twist and that’s my favorite thing about the book. However, I did find it fairly depressing. The topic of most thriller books is murder and it’s understandable that many can go into very dark places. I thought this one borderlines depressing a few times and that was my least favorite thing. Overall good book. I’m glad I read it.
This book was so good I could not put it down. I was able to guess many of the twists but I was thrown for a loop at the end. I was in a serious state of a "mental funk" after I finished this book, it lasted a few days. But with that in mind, I would definitely read it again and recommend it to all my friends. Let me know if anyone is curious about what I predicted and what I got right =D
Hello, fellow bookies. I just discovered this group, and I look forward to future reads. I was searching through the discussion because I am reading The Silent Patient right now. At 57%, I am undecided about it: I even considered quitting it because frankly, I am a bit disappointed. SPOILERS: The therapist: Theo kind of gives me the creeps. He is so grossly inappropriate with disregard for professional ethics. Who is so obsessed with a patient that he seeks employment where she is hospitalized for the sole purpose of being involved with her? And that business of contacting her family! Just wrong! Whatever happened to confidentiality? He lacks depth and his discussions about mental health and therapeutic relationships are preachy. I also wonder about his former therapist, Ruth. He showed up at her home, unannounced, and she invites him in. Boundaries, anyone? She seems to see him as someone who does not get the love he deserves--as a victim. At first, that seemed valid, but the more I learn of him the less I trust that assessment. Alicia seems to have all the power because she has what everyone wants: Answers. Is it worth going forward? Thanks
Hi Murrill - Could you please use spoiler tags instead of just typing "SPOILERS" so that no one accidentally reads a spoiler? Thank you for marking it. If you don't know how, you type the following and remove all of the (5) periods. I put those in just so you can see it and it won't turn into an actual spoiler. Don't leave any extra spaces.
<.spoiler.> Put the text you want to hide here. <./.spoiler.>

Well, I personally liked trying to figure out the mysteries. And I loved the twists and turns. AND especially the "why does she not speak?!" deal.
I'm a curious person, so I had to finish the book to know. And I think you would enjoy the twists and turns the book has.
While I was reading I marked my thoughts here under spoilers (in posts above) and you can see my mind was all over the place...I had lots of theories :)
I hope you enjoy the book if you jkeep reading. If you decide to drop it, I hope your next read is more interesting for you.
