Speaking of Cecelia, did you have any hope she was still alive?

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I was wondering if she was posing in her husband's house as the maid that ran away. I thought he may have married Una illegally and he was working with Cecelia conning the people who invested in his Panama project. Of course, I also thought Una was working with Truett. I was really grasping at different ideas for the first half of this book.

I was pretty certain she was dead very early on. Pollock couldn’t have married Una if she was alive so I accepted she was dead but not the way he claimed.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I figured since Pollock was a con man, leaving one wife in Chicago and marrying another in NYC was not out of the question.

Good point. I just figured she was dead since her brother couldn’t find her.

~ Giulia ~ | 193 comments I hoped she was still alive somewhere, mostly because of the way Pollock kept refusing to say where se was buried. I figured that even if he did beat her to death he could've passed it for an accident, and in any case at the time they weren't very harsh against husbands who killed their wives. But I always knew the chance was very slim :(

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments No, I knew all along she was dead.
Pollack's abuse of Una followed a very common pattern and I knew he had killed his first wife.
