I was given an EIN (Employer Identification Number) by the IRS (I am based in the UK). I filled a form in online, and then someone from the IRS called me on the phone a few days later. They gave me the number then and the letter came in the post a few weeks later.
Certainly didn't take 3 months.
On the paperwork I have, web address is www.irs.gov and phone 1-800-829-3676

Used it and other links form it as a guide and got the EIN over the phone. They'll give you your EIN and you can use it straight away from what I remember and they will post you also. Just make sure you spell everything to the letter and don't be afraid to do it phonetically too to ensure they get it right. Not sure how they would go with Brit accent but had to go over it a couple times with Aussie accent, and mines not that broad either.
Thanks guys :] I did see that blog, gonna give it a go when I arrive at mums. Just thought it was better to ask so I can plan to go to embassys and things if need be :p

Apparently you need one of these to gain access to the tax treaties or else the US holds 30% of your earnings from the US sites (Amazon and smashwords)
Any one gone through the process yet?
I'm going to London next week. Wondering if it's worth camping out at the Embassy until someone helps me xD
Heard it takes three months :[
