Roy Lichtenstein...I love the "America" lyrics. Have to admit the title and date made it pretty easy.
Don't forget "The heat was hot." and "There ain't no one to give you no pain." = blatant and lousy rip-off of Neil Young. IMHO ...

Lala laa lalala lala ;-)
But I love Neil Young too!

I think that "America" must have loved Neil Young too!
Here's a quote from Dewey Brunnell, the lead vocalist, acoustic guitar player for America and author of the song: "I know that virtually everyone, on first hearing, assumed it was Neil. I never fully shied away from the fact that I was inspired by him. I think it's in the structure of the song as much as in the tone of his voice. It did hurt a little, because we got some pretty bad backlash. I've always attributed it more to people protecting their own heroes more than attacking me."Accused of referencing heroine (horse) it was banned in Kansas and elsewhere. Others thought it was about Transcendental Meditation, a horse with no name being a mantra. Or...it could be just a bit of Dada with a southwest existential feel to it.
Wow. His early work was fantastic and then he got sucked into pop tart. It was a come down but still incredible work.

Possibly the dumbest song ever.
Well, I don’t even know to what song you are referring but the lyrics you quoted sound really stupid!
I really like the lyrics and have fond memories of the song. I get that it sounds so much like Neil Young but then lots of people sound like other people. We stand on each others shoulders in music, art and all things. This song certainly doesn't diminish Neil Young any...
I think having good memories of songs can help us enjoy the music no matter what it really says or sounds like had we heard it in another setting, maybe. There is music that just isn’t my taste and if I didn’t have the memories with certain people or places, I probably wouldn’t enjoy them like I do. Good point, Kristine.

Thanks, Dirk.Groovy! Yes, I have heard that song when I was little. I always thought it was one of those hippy-drug songs. I imagined them sitting around a campfire smoking weed or something. Lol but idk, being a musician myself, IMO it seemed like a lazy make of a song, using two whole notes and a few background chords, not too much ingenuity.

Heather, I thought the same. I actually like this song!

There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
