Ruby (rubyornotruby) Hello everyone! My name is Ruby, I'm 24, and I'm from NJ, but I live in SoCal for now. Ive been vegan for almost 5 years, and I was vegetarian for a few years before that which seems to be a trend. I also have a cat named Maple and I volunteer at an animal sanctuary and work mainly with this one goat named Sundance.

Ive been a reader for pretty much my whole life! I read things from all genres, but right now I am super into Agatha Christie mysteries. I've read a few vegan-centric books like Eating Animals and The Vegetarian, and I am on the waitlist at my library for How Not to Die! I'm excited to branch out though!

Hey Ruby! Welcome to Vegan Book Club :)

Volunteering at an animal sanctuary sounds amazing! And working primarily with a goat? Even better!

What did you think of The Vegetarian? That was our first group read, and in general, it seems to have...mixed responses haha.

Elizabeth Hello! I’m from windy rainy (right now!) England and have been vegan for around 7/8 years now and was vegetarian from the age of 13 (I’m now 43).

I love reading, my favourites are romance! I started with the wonderful Mills and Boon (I don’t care I’m proud!) and continued with with Johanna Lindsay, Jilly Cooper and Judith McNaught and nowadays my favourites are Alice Coldbreath, Erin McCarthy and Lori Foster. BUT I must say I also enjoy reading Stephen Fry and have just started the chronicles of Sherlock Holmes by of course, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle so I hope I have a broad range of tastes! I’ll read almost things but absolutely not tragic true life or fictions stories. I need a happy ever after!

I joined this group via Instagram and have read The Green and The Red because of this. I look forward to many more reads with you all.

Mary x

Happy to have you in VBC, Elizabeth!

I'm with you - I'll read just about anything, but nothing tops a happily ever after romance for me anymore :)

Shannon Lionheart | 5 comments Hello Everyone!

I’m Shannon, I currently live in Kansas City, Mo (USA) but moving to Hawaii this summer with my wonderful husband and rescued animal buddies. I became a vegetarian at the age of 12, my husband and I have been vegans for over a decade. I volunteer with several animal rescues (dogs, horses) mainly in my spare time.

I worked for a bird rescue but recently had to leave due to our move, I have been a nanny off and on since I graduated HS and while working towards my degree in early education.

I became a bookworm when I was in 8th grade when I happened upon a banned book list, before that I only read in class. Lol

I am not too particular about what I read, but I have been working on reading classics, Newberry Winners, and Pulitzer Prize winners mainly for fiction but Angela’s Ashes By Frank McCourt is one of my favorite books.

I’ve never been great at book clubs on Goodreads, I start out with good intentions but life and other books just get in the way. I’m hoping that I will at least be apart of one or more book discussions in this club, this year!

message 56: by Tabbie (new)

Tabbie Holmes Hi Everyone! My name is Tabbie and I currently live in South Carolina. I’m a nurse and work with oncology patients. I became vegetarian in 2014 because of witnessing chicken trucks headed to slaughterhouses for the first time. I then became Vegan in November 2019 and I’m never going back.

I’m Vegan for the animals first and health/environment reasons second. I love to read Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and books about nutrition/science. I’m excited to broaden my reading by joining this book club!

We read a sci-fi series, Xenogenesis by Octavia E. Butler - the aliens in the trilogy are vegetarian/vegan! If you like science fiction and haven't read it yet, you might enjoy it :)

Andrea Quiroz Hello everyone! My name is Andrea. I am 29 years old and currently volunteer at a cat sanctuary in Texas. I have been Vegan for about 8/9 years now. I love reading stories about animals from informative and behavior to sweet family-themed stories on how an animal has changed someone's life. I also love reading YA fantasy and middle-grade books. Kent Golden (trashpandabooks) | 24 comments Hello all! I'm Kent - a professor, author, and animal lover living in Connecticut. I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years and am so close to getting all the way to vegan! I am totally new to GoodReads so could use a few friends. :) My first book is "Ricky the Time Traveling Trash Panda", which is about a raccoon sent from the future to save animals and humans from an impending climate disaster. It takes on the moral questions of humans living with animals (eating meat, hunting, and experimentation). Some of the carnivores think it's too preachy, but I'm hoping it will strike a chord with teens and also some of you. Many have loved it. I can offer a free digital copy to some of you, so please lmk if you are interested. I'm working on book #2 so I could use some honest feedback! Thanks! http://www.trashpandabooks.com/

Love the look of this book and the age range is perfect for open minds at a critical time of growth. I've just bought it digitally now and will post a review when I get around to reading :)
I would imagine the premise and characters would translate well into graphical novels too.

I’ve always loved reading and recently joined this group. I usually read fiction but I enjoy most genres. So proud of myself for finally finishing Anna Karenina last month!:). It was very good, just really long!
I also love cooking healthy vegan food, doing yoga and enjoying nature. Looking forward to reading this month’s book!

👋 hi I’m Samantha and I’m not fully vegan because my spouse is still an omnivore and he is the cook in our household. We’ve compromised and we eat mostly vegetarian and no eggs and the only dairy is cheese. It’s a work in progress, but progress not perfection, yeah? I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 12 tho (now 25] and have gone through vegan periods when I’ve had more control over my diet (basically just the three years between graduating with my MA and getting married...). Anyway, I hope to one day be able to be fully vegan.

I am actually getting my PhD in English and I study animal in literature and teach courses about animals. My research is primarily in science fiction and fantasy so that the primary animal-related fiction I read right now but I want to be more broadly read so I’m hoping this group will provide a platform for finding more works about animals and animal rights to broaden my reading experiences.

Hi Samantha, welcome to Vegan Book Club!

Ooh, your research sounds fascinating! Have you read Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis series? We read the trilogy in the early days of VBC because the aliens in the novels are vegan/vegetarian!

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

It is on my list, but I haven't yet. My dissertation is specifically about talking animals right now (academia is nothing if not hyper-specific) so that's been my primary work-related reading over the past year. My research isn't explicitly vegan but you can't reseearch animal rights without it being vegan.

Jesús Fernández (jfz93) | 2 comments Hi everyone!
I'm Jesús from Spain and I've been in this group for a while but I'll be joining all of you guys for the September book :)

I've been vegetarian for four years and vegan for one. Struggling with what you may call the Costello syndrome. It seems you covered that topic with Vystopia, I'll definitely check that out!

I see I'm not the only one here doing a Ph. D. on talking animals!! That is a surprise. I enjoy science fiction the most though poetry has a special place in my heart too :D

Also, and most importantly, I share my house with two amazing creatures called Arctic and Lightning, a lovebird and a rabbit who are too sociable at times!

Glad to be able to read you all, I'm sure I won't regret taking some time off to get involved with this book club :)

Julia | 1 comments Hello vegans!!!
I’m julia, a 17yo teenager living in North of France. I’m studying languages and literature in high school (i’m a senior).

Since i can remember, i always loved to read. If i had to tell my fav genres i’d say: dystopian, utopian, classics and essays. I love inclusive books when i can relate to the

I advocate for humans’ rights (women, poc, lgbtq+, poors, migrants, disabled people...) and for climate change.

Finally i became an ovo-lacto vegetarian a year and half ago when i traveled in Scotland, there were a lot more veggies options there than there’re in France. Later i would love to become vegan but now it’s difficult because i still live with my family.

Thank you for reading my monologue:)

One for the TBR.

I think Chasing Solace by Karl Drinkwater is my most recent great vegan novel. It's scifi which I don't often read, but this story was exciting and thought-provoking

message 90: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll give "Chasing Solace" a try. I've just finished reading "Eternal Treblinka" which is very interesting. Congratulations on becoming a vegan Stephanie. I will say from experience, having been a vegan for many years, is that the best way to maintain your beliefs is to read as much about animal rights as you can. 🙂

I'll have to add Chasing Solace to our to-read list! I've never heard of it - is there a vegan character?

I've blogged my review here, http://litflits.blogspot.com/2020/07/..., which is spoiler-free, but don't click through if you prefer to go into novels without any extra info about the story!
