message 202: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments I will grab a quick read for the last Cinnamon-spell-it-out & then I will also start on Emma by Jane Austen which IS a classic and over 500 pages.

message 203: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i should have saved the last book in the lunar chronicles series for a challenge, it was like 840 pages lol but i was on a roll with that series a few months ago and finished it.

i should be able to finish prey of the gods and the lavendar menace by the end of this week, although if i don't quite make it then the second one is an anthology so it works for basically all letters

message 204: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Not sure if things can be moved around or if a spot can be saved for my book, but I'm reading a non-fiction that I will definitely finish today (only have one chapter left) and it only works for the letter "I".

We can do that, Joanne - thanks for the heads up!

FANTASTIC JOB, LADIES

We managed to spell out CINNAMON 4 times + have an extra book for a partial word, courtesy of Joanne. :)

If you already finished books today, please report them to the thread. According to the rules, we are allowed to submit 1 incomplete word.

Otherwise, I kindly ask you to HOLD BACK FINISHING ANY OTHER BOOKS UNTIL AFTER THE DEADLINE, so that the next books can count toward Week 3.

SANDY will give us the green light for that after she checked us in for ending Round 2.

COUNTDOWN to end of Round 2 is today, 10.00 PM UK time.

message 209: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments well i'm about to finish my last two books in the next hour and they both work for almost all the letters so i hope it's okay that i go ahead and finish them since i didn't mark down any character names for next weeks letters

message 210: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments Go ahead! Points are points, after all. :)

message 211: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments Great job muchachas!! I have one book I've finished and another that I'll get done before the deadline (if it had O's I'd put it off, but it doesn't and I need it for another challenge.)

Please let me know when you're done for the week - thanks!!

message 212: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments I'm done for the week.

Fantastic job everyone :D

message 213: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments Me too. I have started on 2 classics, one has an O for sure.

message 214: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i'm done for the week as well. i've started one book for next week so far and after only a handful of chapters it's got all the letters except for C & L so off to a good start!

also, has week 3 not been adding to the planning sheet yet or am i just not seeing it somehow?

Sorry - I'm adding it now

message 216: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'm done for the week. Started two low 500 page books (one audio, one written) for next week. One of them is a classic and has an O. Clan of the Cave Bear - lol I've never read it, but I remember all the girls in highschool whispering about it. So it has this forbidden feel to me :) Somehow I think they'd never been exposed to the Backroom books!

I've been fighting (and losing) a battle with a UTI all week. It sucks for all of the life things I need to do, but it has been pretty good for reading since that is the only thing I even kind of have energy for.

message 217: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments Suzanne, I am so sorry to hear it. :( Get well soon!

message 218: by Melindam (last edited Jun 28, 2019 11:35PM) (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments I am reading Emma by Jane Austen & Barchester Towers by Anthony Trollope for classics over the w/e. Both are over 500 pages, plus B. Towers has an O character.

I will also be reading Tara Road by Maeve Binchy by Maeve Binchy. It's over 650 and has an O character + a qucik read nevertheless, because it's very good. :)

message 219: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments Too hot here to leave the house today (because I'm a wimp when it comes to the sun haha) so I'm currently hiding in the shade in the garden with the wonderful Sir Terry Pratchett and a fruity cider <3 What are you ladies up to this weekend?

message 220: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Megan I'm a heat wimp too!! That sounds like a great plan.

I'm going to rest most of the day and then this afternoon/evening we have my granddaughter's birthday party. It is at a pizza/play place and from what I hear she is VERY excited. Kids and birthdays are so cute - I wish I could get that excited about mine!

message 221: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments Megan, which book is it by Sir Terry this time? :)

message 222: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments I just finished baking tons (or so it seems) of pancakes. Did it on the terrace though on my makeshift summer kitchen while drinking icy lemonades...so can't complain really. :)

message 223: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments I saw on our news that Europe is having a terrible heat wave - I hope you all stay as cool as possible and safe!

@Suzanne - I saw you got DQ's for Daisy Jones! Yay!!!

I've got errands to run this morning and then cleaning and listening to my audio books. I've got a few that I need to finish up for other challenges and also that are due back to Overdrive soon, but I'll get some classics in this week.

message 224: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments no big plans this weekend so hopefully i'll get some reading done if i don't get distracted lol

also wanted to give a heads up that my doctor who book is audio only so it doesn't have a page count. it's 5 hours 4 minutes so it's long enough but i don't know if you need to ask the mods if that counts as under or over 200 pages.

message 225: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments Melindam wrote: "Megan, which book is it by Sir Terry this time? :)"

I'm reading The Truth (Discworld, #25; Industrial Revolution, #2) by Terry Pratchett this time! I'm actually starting to run out of books by Sir Terry that I haven't read yet so I will have to start rereading soon!

message 226: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments This is hilarious. I have read all Discworld novels, so I keep re-reading my favourites. :)

message 227: by Joanne (new)

Joanne I'm working this weekend and it's really busy here (I do testing for Cord Blood and PostPartum mothers and certain times of the year are much busier than others.) I have Monday and Tuesday off though, so I'm looking forward to spending some time in the backyard if it isn't too hot.

Devann,

I have run this by the Mods to see how many points we can get for this. This is their reply

"For audio books without a direct book equivalent - such as the audio only specials Audible produces, or abridged versions - then the page count will have to be set to 5 point range (i.e. 160 - 200 pages inclusive)

This is way more straightforward that trying to find a formula, as different narrators give different lengths (a really good example of this is the different versions of Lock In where Amber Benson's reading is an hour longer than Wil Wheaton's)"

message 229: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments I'm such a numpty.
I downloaded The Princess Bride by William Goldman then realised it was the "abridged version" and was searching for ages for the "full" version before I realised that the "full" version doesn't actually exist and that's the joke. I feel a bit silly now :p

message 230: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments @Melindam ok good to know! i think that one probably would have been close to 200 pages anyway if 4 hours = 160 pages and it was 5 hours so not much lost, but i will try not to listen to anything really long without a real page count til the challenge is over ;)

@Megan haha i've done something similar before when authors have republished the same story / series but under a different title, or when they publish parts separately and then combine them later. usually goodreads helps me figure it out but not always

message 231: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments also i saw that the backroom BR for this month has been chosen. it's not really what i normally read [i don't do much contemporary romance] but it doesn't sound awful so i might end up trying to read it lol

I've borrowed several audio books from Overdrive and they turned out to be abridged! I don't always look at the details/time and just assume it's the full book since it doesn't usually say anything in the description. Sigh.....

I hope everyone had a great weekend!!

AWESOME START, LOVELIES

Already spelled out CHOCOLATE once + read 4 books for the genre points.

Devann, if you volunteer for the backroom BOM, that also means extra points. :)

message 234: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments I will read 2 more books for the genre points:
The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim & The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

message 235: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments haha honestly me reading the book will be a small miracle if it happens, there's no way i could write questions for it.

also i'm planning on doing the audio for war of the worlds so that will be another genre point

message 236: by Joanne (new)

Joanne I've started the BOM Daisy Jones & The Six. It's really good on audio. I'm going to take my time with it though. Once we know our word for next week I'll note down what the book works for in regards to characters/audio narrators.

message 237: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments Thanks for the heads-up Joanne.

message 238: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments Hi everyone! Sorry I'm slow in getting my books posted - I've got a number of them I'll get added today.

I've got Daisy Jones & the Six on hold through Overdrive - I hope it comes in soon!! I'm glad you're enjoying it, Joanne.

I'm reading Black Beauty for classics and I've got several others that I'm trying to choose from.

Great job reading everyone (and again, Melinda for those big book points!!)

Your Fright Week genre is THRILLER

Your word remains BEIGE

message 243: by Joanne (new)

Joanne I'm ok with BEIGE again. The few books I have planned will work for the new word. If everyone wants to spin though, it's fine with me.

UPDATE OF UPDATE (Apparently I was a bit quick with sharing the genre info)

GREENIES

We are into the 3rd spell-out for CHOCOLATE + need 6 more classics for the genre points.

AND, as you can see from the Mods Post

THE WHEEL HAS BEEN SPUN AGAIN! And came up with a TWIST

We got AGAIN the word BEIGE but instead of ADVENTURE, we have the genre THRILLER.

Thank Heaven, quite a few of my mystery/detective books have the tag "thriller" on the first page. PHEW....

FRIGHT WEEK MINI CHALLENGE

ORIGINAL POST

The Chipmunks were so terrified by the number of teams reading horror & suspense that they accidently hit the genre respin button, and ALL teams have a word linked to those two genres.
Teams with new genres should note that their word has NOT changed.

We'll be running a mini-challenge during Fright Week (5 - 12 July)!

Teams are on a scavenger hunt to round up Fright Week words, finding them in the title, text or cover (if it fits) of their books.
Teams can find up to 25 of the words, across the standard and tricky words.
All words must match, the only variations allowed are singular/plural or different hyphenation. Tricky words must be found together as the phrase

It's 1 word / book

STANDARD WORDS - 5 points each
blood chills Dracula Jason Winchester
gravestone bone Frankenstein defenestrate Carrie
scream anxiety Jack the Ripper supernatural poison
rollercoaster cliff-hanger Rebecca Sam serial killer
horror Caleb Exorcist Dean Salem
suspense Annabelle Damian Satan cat
fright Chucky devil witch hide
creepy Pennywise Pyscho knife sofa
terror spider Jaws gore death
stalker clown Scarecrow behead maim
invoke cabin woods night monster
shadows dark nightmare conjure flay

TRICKY ONES - 10 points each
Freddie Krueger
Black Dahlia
Black Widow
Andrea Yates
Charles Manson
White Woman
Michael Myers
OJ Simpson
Marie Antoinnette
Lucrezia Borgia
Bloody Mary

sheets will be added in the next day or so

ReSpins will not be possible this week - the Chipmunks are hiding under the sofa
