SandyL | 4747 comments Great job everyone! I'm listening to another adventure book as well if we need it.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Suzanne | 5417 comments So question about the BOM - I may go ahead and read Perfect Formation for the backroom read - since it's free on kindle and we get team points, right? But should I wait to finish it until we get a new word? Because as far as I can tell It doesn't fit any of our letters.

Melindam | 8367 comments I have also joined the backroom discussion. The discussion is fun, but I find the book extremely silly and ...honestly...boring. I would dnf it if it wasn't for the points. :)
Thankfully it's short. Small mercies :))
PLUS the Mods decided to take the the one with 206 pages as the basic edition (the kindle is 169) so it will be 10 points instead of 5.

message 106: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments haha i just joined the backroom to see what the BoM was and unfortunately i know myself well enough to know that there is no way i can get through that, even if it is short. good luck to all of you though ;)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I did my "join group" thing yesterday - so I assume I'll get in the group at some point :) Hopefully before tomorrow when I leave. That's nice it won't be just a 5 point book because yeah it doesn't look very good.

SandyL | 4747 comments Good morning chicas!!
I'm also doing the BOM - I have the DQ's tomorrow, so we'll get some extra points for that :-) Great reading, huh? I have to say I'm a bit annoyed - I've been in the backroom for awhile and we've had good books to read in the past. Somehow the group has been taken over and made a bit of a joke, which would never happen with the regular BOMs. OK, off my soapbox!

I don't know how many times we'll get through our word, so maybe waiting to finish until next week might be good, since the only letter that works is B.

So how is everyone enjoying the books they've read so far?

message 111: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i never joined the backroom because it always seemed to me that the kinds of adult books people would mention here in the regular group during challenges were definitely not ones i would like and assumed the backroom would be like that, or they were books that like everyone seemed to agree were awful but they all read them anyway? which ...i get that i guess but also i just don't have the time for it personally lol

i do agree that there are definitely more 'high brow' adult books that could be read, although at this point i thought the 'point' of the backroom was to read like ...bad kindle freebies and stuff, but from your comment i guess it wasn't always like that?

i have been mostly liking my books. roadkill was a reread and part of my favorite series ever so i knew i was going to like that one lol. the girl who could move sh*t with her mind was an ARC that i ended up really enjoying. a fun thriller book with a hint of scifi. aurora rising i unfortunately did not like that much. i had read stuff by jay kristoff before but this one was a lot more what i call 'standard ya' and unfortunately the only two characters i really liked out of the main seven were very sidelined. i also finally read exquisite corpse which i really ended up liking despite the fact that it is 500% edgy 90s crap for goth teenagers. oh well, what can i do lol

message 112: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I thought Belle was surprisingly good (although very much like Robin McKinley's Beauty and the Beast, which was a book I loved so I was pre-disposed). I also really liked A Family of Strangers - a good thriller and I didn't get angry at characters charging into stupid situations :)

I'll finish my two YA/adventure books today, and I'm planning on having Britt-Marie was Here done tomorrow (and hoping a letter besides "B" shows up to use). I COULD push and finish Upside of Unrequited and the backroom book before I leave, but I think I'll finish them Sunday night or Monday after my trip because they are both genres I don't normally read, so if we happen to get a spin with those tags, it'd be nice :) That's at least the sensible plan.

message 113: by SandyL (last edited Jun 18, 2019 08:02AM) (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments I think the point of the backroom was BOM's and buddy reads with adult content, since the general group is for readers of all ages and there have been underage readers in previous challenges. Until this round I have never seen bad kindle freebies being used in the group as BOMs. I read a lot of erotic romances and I rarely read the bad kindle freebies unless its for a challenge. Just like in other genres where there are plenty of crappy kindle freebies as well!

Glad you are enjoying your books so far @Devann!!

message 114: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments haha yeah i do read a fair amount of kindle freebies in various genres ...or more recently it seems i read a lot of first chapters of kindle freebies before deleting them. there are some good ones but there's a lot of bad ones as well. although really i guess that when it comes to erotica i would generally rather just read fanfiction, or if i do read an erotica book from kindle it is usually very short and therefore not usable for challenges.

message 115: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Well, backroom was created with the sole purpose of allowing buddy reads with mature content during Towers III, back in 2014.

We kept it for a while, and even revamped it after the challenge because one of the moderators at the time wanted to have a place to read all kind of books that are not suitable to read in here.

After wobble, we closed the group because it didn't had much movement and was a bit hard to maintain. We reopened back last year, because we brought back the buddy reads for HP tower teams .

Since we're on PRIDE month, we thought it would be interesting to have a BOM in there. We had exactly two books nominated, and the current one won the polls.

The group was not taken over or made a joke of it. Sometimes events and threads don't have the impact or participation we hoped for. It happens.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10118 comments Mod
Just popping in to say that the BOMs are chosen from the titles nominated and voted on. Just happened that this month that was a kindle freebie. Given that, the only response was to embrace the joys inherent in badly written erotica! Though kudos to the DQ setters to date: some interesting conversations on consent, self-worth and so forth are arising from Taryn's cream...

The nominees for July look much more interesting (space smut and all!) - check them out and nominate your own!

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments well i have done pretty much nothing productive for this challenge today -_-; listened to a bunch of podcasts and had to DNF the book i was trying to read so now i can't use it for this, but at least it was only at 26% i guess. hopefully i will get more on track again tomorrow. unfortunately good omens has made me realize i need more david tennant in my life again but all the doctor who audiobooks are too short to count so i'm trying to resist ;)

THE WHEEL HAS TURNED.
Our word for next week is...

CINNAMON. Main Genre: LGBT

Many thanks.

Hi Melinda, as my team has this genre too, I've been thinking about options... This is off the top of my head, so I've not double checked for spell-out fitting letters

I recently discovered some very fun (and clean) LGBT mysteries, starting with Holy Hell (has an M char IIRC)
YA is fertile ground - the June BOM is LGBT, and the author's other books are too (Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is probably the best - and has a Nick char); and everyone raves about Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (I've not read yet)
The Wayward Children series (starting with Every Heart a Doorway) is very good - but double check lengths as they are novellas.

Sarah Waters has literary LGBT (Fingersmith etc) and I'm contemplating Orlando

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments The Broken Earth Trilogy (starting with The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1) by N.K. Jemisin ) is LGBT and also happens to be some very impressively written high fantasy/sci-fi so I recommend that one for anyone who hasn't already read it!

message 125: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8367 comments Thank you, Megan. :)

message 126: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments Cat & Megan - TY TY for the recommendations!

This works perfectly for me because although I'm ALMOST done with the Upside of Unrequited, and just finished round one of Perfect Formation, I'll be unable to read after noon today until noon Sunday - I HOPE I can survive that - eeek! Anyway - I have at least 3 books for next week that have the LGBT tag.

I finished my two YA books yesterday but got involved with the grandson and didn't do my completion posts. I will finish Britt Marie soon (almost done) and then get the completion posts for all three in. I think that will be it for this week for me. Sorry it's not more, but I'm glad I was able to finish what I did.

message 127: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4747 comments Hi Greenies!

So are you guys okay with keeping our word/genre? I have plenty of MM romance on my tbr, it looks like Devann is happy 😎, and the current BOM (Upside of unrequited) also fits - plus it would be nice to have more letters to choose from! That's just my opinion, so if anyone has other thoughts, please feel free to speak up.

message 128: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments idk what types of books you usually like to read but i've got a huge lgbt shelf so if there's something you see on there that you want more info on i can try to help you pick something

i'm so glad we got cinnamon though since i'm mostly reading lgbt books this month for pride anyway though. although ugh, all those N's! gonna have to do some planning later

message 129: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 5417 comments I'd vote for keeping it. Especially given the BOMs and I am going to read Competence by Gail Carriger, which has the tag too.

But of course, if the team wants to change, that is also fine! =)

I've updated the spreadsheet to add Week 2, so if you're into planning, have at it!

message 132: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Just finished the doorstopper I was working on, so I will definitely be working on shorter books for the next little bit. Don't worry, one book/week is not my usual reading average.

My next book happens to have a title starting with U, so I was kind of hoping our next word would make use of that, but since the main character's name starts with O, it will still be a good fit.

I read a fair amount of LGBT books but it sounds like everyone else has tons that they are planning or interested in, so I will check my books, but I don't think we'll have a problem coming up with 10 books.

I think we need I's and G's - we've got plenty of B's and E's seem to be in pretty good shape.

Can everyone try and let me know when you've posted your last book for the week? I have to check us in tomorrow and if we're done early for the week I can check us in early - otherwise I'll wait for you to finish a book if needed. Thanks!!

message 138: by Joanne (new)

Joanne I won't be posting any more books for this round, but I'm starting a few for next round.

message 139: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i've only got to finish hogfather and i should be done with it late tomorrow morning

also i hate to ask but i can feel myself getting into a bit of a slump and a lot of the books i was planning to read this month don't fit our letters and a lot of the books that DO are anthologies and i am just so hit or miss on anthologies so i will maybe be able to do one in a week long period but ANYWAY if anyone sees something on my want to read list that would work for several letters for this week then i'll give it a try. i was browsing it earlier but it seemed like every time i went 'yeah i could read that now' i didn't see a way for it to fit the letters, but since all characters obviously aren't listed in the summary i thought some of you might know something i didn't

Having a little look on your list The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus, #1) by Jonathan Stroud works well for one of the hundreds of Ns we need next week (MC Nathaniel) and it will probably be quite a good one to read in a slump as it's a fun easy read!
Also Alice (The Chronicles of Alice, #1) by Christina Henry gives us an A and a C just in the title and author and it does also have quite a big cast of characters. I love it but it is incredibly dark so be warned :p

LOL, Melinda! No worries. Since I had DQ's I had to finish it - I'll get my books posted today and check us in later today. I wish it would have been next week since it fits our genre, but, oh well.....

message 149: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments it was okay. i gave it 3 stars and might technically bump it up to 3.5. for me discworld is like ...well i was first going to read them in order so i read colour of magic first and i thought it was soooo boooooring so i decided to try the death books instead.

and i mean i do like them and they're interesting but also i feel like it's just a series of clever observations strung together without much else holding it together i guess? i mean i guess that's pratchett's 'thing' but to me they're just okay and i know so many people absolutely adore them so i feel like i'm missing something. i think soul music was my favorite so far just because all the references to classic rock music were so ridiculous.

i think i'm going to try the witches series when i'm done with death because i'm hoping those will have more than like one main female character per book lol

Oh yes the Witches series most certainly do have more than one female MC per book!
I adore Pratchett but I'm not a big fan of the Wizards series and also found Colour of Magic to be really meh. The City Watch series is bloody awesome too so maybe check those out!
