I am hoping that the mods will arrange the list so that the leap day prompt will fall the week of Leap Day. :-)

Also, Maximilian Hell was born on May 15, 1720, so maybe that prompt during that week!

Ahhh. I see what you mean. That could indeed present a challenge. Thank you for explaining.

Author's name pronunciation:

BIO - An author who is the same nationality and/or ethnicity as you

Title does not contain ATY:

KIS - Don't include The, A, or An at the beginning of a title
BIO - Choose a title longer than 3 words

A place in the title:

BIO - Include only places you've visited
BIO - Include only places you've never visited
KIS - Include references to place (room, shop, house, etc.) rather than specific names

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments A book that you are prompted to read because of something you read in 2019

KIS - The next book in a series you read in 2019
KIS - A book by an author you read in 2019
KIS - A book with a cover that is similar (image, styling, font) to a book you read in 2019

BIO - A book that has the same time period, location, and/or theme as a book you read in 2019
BIO - A book about the same person or subject as was featured in a book you read in 2019 (ie White Houses by Amy Bloom and Eleanor and Hick by Susan Quinn - Eleanor Roosevelt & Lorena Hickok)
BIO - A book with the exact same title as a book you read in 2019 (ie Arcadia by Iain Pears and Arcadia by Lauren Groff)

Great ideas! Just one question: would NOT including The, A, or An at the beginning of a title be a KIS or a BIO? I would think including them would make the prompt easier, and would therefore be a KIS. Not including THE, A or An would make it harder, so a BIO? Maybe I've got it twisted in my brain! lol

message 107: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
No, because the prompt says “does NOT include A, T, or Y” so leaving out The, A, or An would make it an easier prompt to fulfill.

message 108: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments For "A book with a place name in the title":

BIO - a book with a title that is only the name of a place.

ex:
Manhattan Beach
Galápagos

as opposed to:
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
The Lioness of Morocco

message 109: by Liz (new)

Liz | 516 comments Amy & Emily, I’m confused. Aren’t you both saying the same thing? 😂 I think the wording in your first post about it, Emily, should say the KIS option is to have the words in the title. Using “The,” “A,” or “An” in the title makes it an easier prompt - KIS.

message 110: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (last edited Sep 21, 2019 09:38AM) (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11183 comments Mod
I guess what I meant there is that if you ignore the "the", "A", or "an", then it makes the prompt easier.

For example, if I were counting the articles, I wouldn't be able to read The Golden Hour because "The" has a T in it. If I am not counting the articles, I would be able to read it because I'm not counting "The" as part of the title, and there is no A, T, or Y in the rest of the title.

My wording should have been:

- KIS: When looking at titles, ignore "The", "A", or "An" at the beginning of the title

Liz | 516 comments Ahhh, that makes sense now. :)

I guess I am still having a braincramp about it but I will list it as you suggested :-)

message 113: by Avery (last edited Sep 24, 2019 06:55AM) (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments A place in the title
KIS: Include fictional places or fantasy locations

A book that you are prompted to read because of something you read in 2019
KIS: a book related to a news, magazine, or research article you read in 2019
KIS: a book you read good reviews about in 2019
KIS: a book you started in 2019 but didn't finish
BIO: a book that was referenced in another book you read in 2019

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments BIO for an author you've read only once: A book in a different genre from the one you read previously by that author

message 124: by Christy (new)

Christy | 61 comments Like some other people, I think I'm going to fit the list into a more general personal BIO challenge: the Christy 2020 20/20 challenge! It will be:
-books from at least 20 different countries
-at least 20 ownvoices books
-at least 20 nonfiction books
-at least 20 books from the 1001 books to read before you die list

I don't read 80 books in a year, so it's fine if a book hits multiple categories, but it's time for me to get serious about diversifying my reading and broadening my horizons! Anybody else interested in this sort of overlay onto the challenge?

message 125: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3839 comments Prior year ATY Prompt:
BIO- 1) select 1 (or several) specific prompts before Jan 1; 2) prompt that is different than the other 51 prompts; 3) prompt from a year you didn’t participate in the challenge; 4) randomly select a number from 1-52 and only use that prompt # from any of the years or a specific year (randomly select the year too)!

message 126: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) The KIS/BIO list has been updated as of Oct 26, 2019

message 129: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Well that was a lot easier than last year! The KIS/BIO list has been aligned with the 2020 AtY Challenge list. Time to start planning!

I'm not sure if the mods want to pin this list to the top of the 2020 Reading Plans board as was done in 2019? I assume you can move it there from here without my having to repost it? If I do need to repost, just let me know. :-)

Christy, I’m doing something similar.
*12 books from different countries
*10 books from US states that I didn’t read in 2019 (I read about 24)
*10 books from the 1001 list
*10 ABE authors that I have not previously read.

The books can overlap the categories with the ATY challenge.

Happy Reading in 2020
Linda

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 836 comments Without meaning to, I chose books for the first five prompts (or the January prompts for those reading in order) that all had the letter "C" as the beginning of one of the words in their title.

I might do this as a BIO option for my whole ATY list, to have a common starting letter for each "month's" prompts.

For February it's "L". For March, I haven't filled it all out yet but it's either "N", "A" or the colon ":"

My 2020 list.

That's a cool twist, Ana, and a great way to narrow down prompts for your challenge.

message 135: by Cheryl A. (new)

Cheryl A. (teddi1961) I am going to challenge myself with the BIO of Alphabet (repeat for second 26 prompts) I am sort of using KIS as I will pick books that also fit prompts from my other three reading challenges (all books would fit for my 2020 GR reading challenge of 250 books read!)

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 836 comments Emily wrote: "That's a cool twist, Ana, and a great way to narrow down prompts for your challenge."

Oh yes. Even though it's a BIO, it actually makes it easier for me to choose since too many choices makes me feel anxious. Plus it looks neat for the titles to have something in common when they're all listed together.

message 137: by Steven (new)

Steven McCreary | 141 comments I'm trying to knock out books from my TBR this year, which happen to be mostly books from the 1001 list, or other similar lists. I like the idea of different countries. I might try to incorporate that too.
