Edie | 1144 comments Love Letters to the Dead which I started reading as a book on the 6th page of my TBR list is a debut novel. I am 30% through this book and will prioritize it since the other books I am reading can't count for any of the prompts we have left.

message 502: by Christy (new)

Christy | 61 comments For our next question, perhaps we should return to genre? Possibly ask whether the author writes fantasy?
Alternatively, we could ask something like has the author written 10 or more books. Most authors of genre fiction have a higher book count to their name, so it could narrow it down a little more specifically than the direct question re genre.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
I think asking about genre is definitely the next step. We could go with either "Does she write sci-fi/fantasy or historical fiction?", which would cut out the authors who do contemporary/literary fiction, or we can ask about YA vs adult fiction... So many options!

message 504: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I’m so confused lol . Finished The Sun is also a Star. Not sure if we still need that for child
mC?

Page count today is 251

I’m on the app so I’ll finish up the halfway mark later. It’s been a long day I wore myself out .

Tracy, we are covered for that bucket, but great job on the reading and I'll add those page counts!

message 506: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I think a case could be made that Tracy's The Sun is Also a Star does fit the pretty book spine prompt (the version I've seen anyway has a colorful book spine with the sunburst illustration on the front wrapping around)?

Just a thought since I think Kathryn's book for the pretty spine also works in the travel prompt or others.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Oh! Let's do that!

message 508: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
So we have finished Bucket 11, and I just finished Where'd You Go, Bernadette, in which the character travels to Antartica, so! we can cover that prompt as well!

All we need is a book from an author from an island, and we will complete Bucket 12!

message 509: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I was going to suggest using The Sun is Also A Star for the spine prompt too. It really is pretty cool.

message 510: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
I just realized we never asked a question for Bucket 10, so we now have two questions available for us to ask about our author. I'm thinking genre, but what do you all think?

message 511: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Funny thing... I own the book twice over (I apparently forgot I owned it and bought it again) but I didn't even think to check the spine. Good looking out, ladies.

message 512: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I agree on narrowing down genre seems most helpful.

I have an Australian book underway for the island read, but it is doubtful I could finish it in the next 24 hours, probably not until tomorrow night. Since it is likely someone else will get to that first, I can look further down the line.

I have a copy of Trail of Lightning at home so could prioritize that since it was recommended here unless someone else has a book recommended by the group.

I'm also working on Into the Drowning Deep mostly on audio which is a book set mostly during August for the summer prompt, but could read it in print too to speed things along if we need it.

message 513: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I am finishing off the island book. Will write as soon as I am done.

message 514: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (last edited Jun 12, 2019 02:00PM) (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Deborah, you are killing this reading game, so do whatever you feel like doing and we will figure it out. I think Johanne just had a few pages left of a book by Murakami, who is from Japan, which is an island. Maybe skip ahead to Trail of Lightning, since no one else on the Planning tab has said they have a book for that one?

EDIT: Yep! Thanks Johanne!

message 515: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I need to read a book that starts with a Y for another challenge I’m doing. Can anyone recommend one? Then I can double count it for that and read it for a book recommended during the challenge.

message 516: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1567 comments Sorry I didn't get a chance to check in yesterday as predicted i was a little out of it following my procedure.

I did end up reading before I went to bed on 6/11 and last night and finished Buried and read a total of 214 pages.

Buried could be used for a book with a twist ending, not sure how major it was but it was a twist.

I finished A Few of My Favorite Things and Guess the Movie Adaptation.

message 517: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments Emily wrote: "Oh! Let's do that!"

Just as well - I'm only halfway through the book I was reading for the beautiful spine!

But in this book, the main character also travels to another country, if needed for that (and if I finish it in time!).

I don't have many Y books on my read list! You was a good read if you like to read from a very dark/twisted perspective.

Kathryn | 563 comments Brittany wrote: "I need to read a book that starts with a Y for another challenge I’m doing. Can anyone recommend one? Then I can double count it for that and read it for a book recommended during the challenge."

I recently read Yesterday by Felicia Yap and really enjoyed it. A little bit sci-fi (everyone in the world has either one-day or two-day memory spans - making everyone either a "mono" or a "duo"). Other than that, the world operates as normal.

message 520: by Jill (last edited Jun 12, 2019 02:13PM) (new)

Jill | 725 comments I can read Love with a Chance of Drowning for bucket 15;s “a chick-lit or book with a romantic element but I would probably not finish it until Friday night.

I just realized this is a memoir so it probably will not work. Let me see if I can find something else.

Brittany, I listened to Amy Poehler's Yes Please on audio and it was awesome.

I already listened to this and I loved it!

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Ok for our next question, I will ask:

Does our author primarily write either thrillers/mysteries or sci-fi/fantasy?

message 526: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments For plot twists - Terri Libenson's Postively Izzy and Invisible Emmy are YA graphic novels with pretty cool plot twists. Graphic novels were fine with the challenge right?
Anyone else have ideas for books with plot twists? It's the sort of thing you don't really know till you have read them, unless you research extensively and you don't want to do that because spoilers.
I am listening to 'one of us is lying' on audio, but I can speed it up by physical book if it has a plot twist. Anyone knows? (without spoiling obviously) http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31...

message 527: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I feel like all of Jodi Picoult’s books have a huge plot twist so if anyone was up for reading something by her it would definitely work.

Looking at the book description, I think that this could still work. I think memoir that includes a romantic relationship in it qualifies as having a 'romantic element'.

It is hard to know ahead for plot twists, but generally speaking most things classified as 'thriller' usually has some sort of plot twist.

Perfect. I thought so too but I wanted a second opinion! 😊

message 531: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
I would definitely say anything marked as thriller would have a plot twist, but Johanne, One of Us is Lying would count for that category, so I'll put your name down tentatively for that prompt.

message 532: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1567 comments I finished Buried and it did have a twist at the end.

message 533: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Yeah someone else might definitely beat me to it with this speed :)

I just finished 'Mordet på kommandanten' (Killing Commendatore') by Murakami for island author (Japan).

Today's page count is 138

Hooray! That's another bucket checked off! I need to get on reading How Not to Die Alone 😳

Our next bucket (Bucket 13!) is two books with one similar word in them, and one debut novel.

Kelly and I are both reading How Not to Die Alone, but if anyone is reading a book with any of those words in them, we can count them as well... I planned on starting it tonight but yikes.

We also have a couple people who have already started debuts.

Next bucket is a book recommended by someone in the group (not necessarily Read-A-Thon) and a book that takes place during the summer. We don't have anyone who claimed the summer book (unless I'm mistaken), so if you have a book on deck that may work, let me know!

message 535: by Deborah (last edited Jun 12, 2019 03:49PM) (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments It sounds like a few people have options for recommended books, so I'll prioritize my summer book Into the Drowning Deep which is all in August and the first week of September so it is still officially summer. I'm about a third into it and I have it on audio and in print so should be able to get through it fairly quick.

Katie | 2360 comments Does our author primarily write either thrillers/mysteries or sci-fi/fantasy? NO

message 537: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1567 comments I was trying to think of a way to narrow our next author down and thought maybe seeing if they were nominated for a goodreads choice award in the fiction category could help if they were. If not it would be kind of a throw away question.

message 538: by Dina (new)

Dina | 236 comments Finished Trail of Lightning. Page count is 177 pages for today.

message 539: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Anyone else reading Trail of Lightning? I could count Dina's book with yours for the book with the same word in it.

I'm just starting How Not to Die Alone, so it may be another 24 hours before I finish it.

message 540: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Samantha, do you think we should say for fiction, or should we just say Goodreads choice award in general? And nominated or won?

message 541: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments Does the book have to have all the same words or just one same word?

message 542: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (last edited Jun 12, 2019 05:20PM) (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Just one same word! I just figured it would be easier if we had planned to read the same book anyway.

message 543: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Just dropping in to recommend this book. It just came out this week, but it was a quick read, and it was very moving. (And the audiobook is read by the author - love that prompt idea, Emily!).

Love Thy Neighbor: A Muslim Doctor's Struggle for Home in Rural America

message 544: by Dina (new)

Dina | 236 comments Movie Challenge completed.

message 545: by Edie (new)

Does the author's last name start with M, N or O ?

message 546: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments finished the halfway game.

Not sure what to read next. Is everything covered? Is just reading for pages ok? I'm struggling.

I was just about to suggest that, Edie!! You beat me by a couple of minutes!

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Tracy, you can pick up a book that one of the words in Trail of Lightning or How Not to Die Alone, if you need some direction...

And our next question will be:

Does the author's last name start with M, N or O ?

message 549: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Does the author's last name start with M, N or O? YES

One more question available! Do we want to go with narrowing it down to M? This would be question 14.
