I have really enjoyed most of Neil Gaiman's books. I loved listening to him read his own The Graveyard Book. His voice is so unique and perfect for his stories. I recently shared that book with my 18 year old grandson and he loved it. He also commented on Gaiman's voice. I recently listened to an interview (from this site) with Gaiman and was reintroduced to his beautiful cadence. That may have prompted me to pick up the YA picture book. I thought, picture book (?) but I've always loved them and wouldn't hesitate but really - YA? Yep, perfect!
Gaiman's writing, if you've heard his voice, showcases in this story - I could so hear him (plus I found this is available on audio but you'd miss these illustrations).
There's a queen who is about to be married the very next day. There are three dwarfs who are off to get her some amazing silk from the city on the other side of an unclimbable mountain - no problem - they go under it! What they discover they bring back to the queen who puts her wedding on hold. Truth to tell, she didn't seem all that excited about it!
The story is a wonderful blend of two well know fairy tales that you thought you knew - until Neil Gaiman took on the story. Then as you read, you are sure you know the twist to this new telling. Hold on because you really don't.
Delightful book but he really threw me and left me a bit hanging - maybe I just need more of the story!
