The only one of those I don't like is chocolate and coconut...but that's because I just don't like coconut. It's not so much the flavor as the texture though that's the problem...

Lovin' the Wheel of Brown. Although praying not too much Umber... I've used up all my "U"s in previous Wheels, sigh..
Hi!! It is good to be back! I always have fun on NBRC group challenges but haven't managed to participate in one for quite some time. I was so excited when I saw that WaT IV was up. :)
To say Happy Friday! I've released some more information on the game.
No, not teams! be patient a couple of days longer! Points!
Top Shelves
Each word on the wheel has been paired with a genre. If you read and use a book with the matching genre, you will gain 5 bonus points per book, for a maximum of 10 books / 50 points.
Genres must match exactly (though plural/singular is OK), and must be found on page 1 of the "Top Shelves" for the book. There is no minimum number of tags needed, provided it is present on page 1. If it's at the bottom of page, you might want to get approval from the Captains Group.

Walnut New Adult
Oh no! I'm not very keen at all on most of those! Hope my team doesn't hate me if I don't match the theme! lol.And no section for grown up fantasy? Boooooo!!! :P
It’s all about getting out of comfort zones 😉 and I actually think they are easier than they seem. Like space opera! Who knew - I have read books in that genre!

Lol, ditto to all of that!
I really like this twist though! Makes things more difficult if you wanna grab the bonus points. I will definitely try, but depending on which word my team gets, it may or may not be major fail. 😅

I was kinda looking forward to reading some books I actually wanted to read, lol.
While I love sci-fi, Space Opera is probably my least favourite sub genre, but it should be one I can fulfill. Just a shame they usually tend to be quite thin volumes.
Classics works well for me, and adventure can often cross over with lots of other genres, but I'll definitely struggle with the rest.
I have series that would work for LGBT, but I only just re-read them for upside down. Eek.
Max 10 bonus points per team, so on a stinker of a week you should be able to get away with relying on your team :)
And the requirement is for it to be on the Top Shelves page, so that's a list of 100 options, not the 3 - 10 that pop up on the book's main page.

hahahahaha! you'd better start making offerings to the Wheel not to get that walnut!

I think if you really can’t bring yourself to a genre then just tell your team. It’s capped at 10 per team per week so you should have someone in the team happy to take on an extra.
Like I don’t read horror. Not my thing. At.all. But I know every Stephen king book is shelved that way (even when they aren’t horror) so that becomes my go to for that genre 😂

10 per team works. There's a good chance they won't need my meager 1 book contribution for the bonus then :)

Yeah, I guess horror works for me. I missed that one because I was too pre-occupied with much disliked YA type themes looming there mocking me, lol. Some King *might* work for suspense too, depending on the letters required.

For me it's the SAND. :)
I steer clear of horror. No broadening of horizons in that direction for me.
I am a total scaredy cat!

Same here. Another great go-to for horror that really isn’t is the spooks apprentice series 😉👍

Fun?! what in the world made you think my brown revenge Wheel would be fun?!
I would say that Space Opera is funner than Romance.
and, whilst not space opera, River of Teeth is LGBT, Adventure and Horror, and has feral hippos and hippo-riding cowboys! (and isn't really horror at all). FERAL HIPPOS!
I've read it, but happily #2 in the series / pair has those tags too. I commend them for your reading pleasure!

Definitely grateful for it being first page of top shelves rather than MPG. That should make things much easier for a few of the categories.I think this is a fun twist! The only one of those categories I read regularly is New Adult, so it'll be good to branch out more.
There's a couple on there that I don't care for and I just won't earn bonus points for the team that week if that word gets called. Not going to stress about it or make myself read books I just don't care for either. Your team is not going to hate you if you don't read some of those genres.
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "That River of Teeth book looks awful."
well, it depends what your bench-mark for awful is!
It's no Kadin, that's for sure ;-)
seriously - it was a 3* read for me. I was listening to the audio and I did drift off a bit, but I didn't spend my whole time hating it.
Feral hippos and amoral Mississippi gamblers can't be all bad!

@Cat River of Teeth is so good!probably the only one i will have real trouble with is shifters - and maybe not even then if it counts the top 100 tags and not just the main pages one. or possibly new adult since i have never paid attention to whether books i read are new adult or not, i just shelve them as adult or YA, but should be interesting!
I think "horror" scares people because they think it's all gore. But if you look at the "horror" shelf, there's a lot of non gory books on there. There's actually a lot of classics on that shelf like Frankenstein, Dracula and The Picture of Dorian Grey. Same with New Adult-it's not all college romances. (and I say that as not a huge New Adult fan).
LBGT is not a favorite of mine, but I'll at least look to see what's on there that's not M/M romance. It's just not my thing. But I would read general LBGT fiction, mysteries and biography and the like.

FERAL HIPPOS?!??!?!
I needz it!
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "That River of Teeth book looks awful."I'm reading River of Teeth right now and it's actually fantastic. I thought it was like a meme book, just meant to be stupid. But I'm really enjoying it. Fantastic characters.
I actually liked the second one better but both are good. I just got the author's new fantasy book but no hippos so far.

I just realised that you are talking about Magic for Liars! Let me know if it's as good as the blurb suggests it could be?

i just started it as well but i'm only a few chapters in. i DNFed 2 books this morning so i figured i should pick something by an author i know i like lol
I'm actually super happy it's top 100 shelves because most MM doesn't list LBGT in the top genres. But a lot of them do further down. Since that's one of my favorites Cinnamon will be fun for me. :) Must remember to save all "I" MM books. ;)

Yes, just the one wheel, unlike the Holiday Edition. Each week you'll have a new spin.

Thanks Cat! Trying to put together a list of potential reads so that helps :)
I have been fighting the urge to to plan for this because I just don't know what words my team will get. It's killing the compulsive planner in me!
Yea can't plan too hard but wanted to try to pick a couple books to start for each of the genres since I have time to look today!

Sign-ups are now closed!
Teams will be revealed later today / tomorrow (UK times apply)
In the mean time, check out the latest addition to the rules: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "If your team chooses to respin, does that mean the books read for the original word don't count?"
You will chose to respin before the start of the week, when you first find out what the word is, so you will never start reading for the original word.
For example:
Wednesday: Team discovers its word will be SAND & the Top Shelf HORROR. Team decides they don't want to play that word and request a respin.
Thursday: the Chipmunks do their thing and the team gets its new word.
Friday (10pm UK): Team start reading for their word (the respin)
This is just a chance to get a better word / genre for the team.
You only get two respins during the game, and you can only respin once a week (i.e. if you hate the respun word even more you are stuck!)

Each team has all week to figure out where their books/letters fit best, before the spreadsheets close... Right?

Right!
Mary, does the explanation @msg148 make sense now?
