Fiction or non-fiction? For teens (young adults) or older adults?
Historical - time period?

Steve | 2 comments Yes its Non fiction and for adults. Time period i'm unsure of, definitely not future or post 1960's. If what i remember is correct the main characters snowmobile breaks down and he uses the parts to help survival.

Capn | 3506 comments I think it could be one of the James A Houston books (I think some are non-fiction, but definitely fiction, too. Wrote for adult and juvenile audiences alike - Wikipedia Bibliography breaks it down well, see below):

He's Canadian, the books are good, and for some reason almost completely impossible to find a reference for!

Frozen Fire, or Black Diamonds? I think Ice Swords also features the same characters...

Frozen Fire: A Tale Of Courage
by James A. Houston

The Canadian Arctic - a frozen land where bone-chilling winds and negative forty degree temperatures can last for days on end. Matthew and Kayak are familiar with the territory, and they plan carefully before they set out on their secret snowmobile search - a search for Matthew's missing father. But when the boys become stranded, every minute is a struggle for survival.

I spent forever looking for this particular book.
