Artist's rendering of the ancient wonder

Some history about this ancient wonder:
The Temple of Artemis was an temple built to honor the goddess Artemis (aka Diana) in Ephesus, Turkey . The temple was built and re-built on three different occasions. The first edition was built in the Bronze Age, but was later destroyed by a flood during the 7th century BC. A bigger and more splendid temple was rebuilt around 550 BC, but destroyed by fire by the notorious arsonist Herostratus in 356 BC. Finally, construction for the largest and most spectacular edition began in 326 BC, taking many years to complete. This edition was named as one of the Seven Ancient Wonders by Antipater of Sidon.

The new Temple of Artemis contained more than 127 columns. It was described as being gilded with gold and silver and containing many sculptures and works of art. It is described numerous times in the Holy Bible. The reconstructed temple stood intact for 600 years, ultimately being severely damaged in a raid by Goths in 268 AD. The Temple was believed to be closed permanently by the Christians around 407 AD. The date of its final destruction are unknown. The site of the Temple of Artemis was rediscovered in 1869 by representatives of the British Museum after six years of searching. Many of the stones were used to build other structures and some of the columns and statues were used to build the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul.
