ABANDONED. I think it's a Dean Koontz book about a teenage nerd turned into a beast

I believe i read this book as a teen, in the mid 90s, so it was written before 1996 because i stopped reading for a while after that. I think it was a Dean Koontz book because i really got into him after that book so i believe its the reason. Tho i could be wrong.
The plot is about a teen boy and his family move to a small town where his dad got a job with some scientific company doing trial work. The boy is weak and doesn't fit in until someone his dad works for or with begins to give him shots of a trial drug that makes him stronger. Eventually he begins to become super violent until he eventually turns into something beast like. Then things get crazy.
Anyone know this book?

Sorry, no; but I don't think it's a Koontz. I've read all his older books, and this doesn't sound familiar.
