Is there a G1000 book that you'd like to buddy read?
(or a book closely associated to a G1000 (e.g. one of the "Ones That Got Away"), or a book that is a surprising omission from the G1000 list)

If you're interested in reading a specific book, outside of the group reads, then here's the place to post and find a buddy!

N.B. Please check that the book you want to buddy-read is not already on our group bookshelf - if it is, then you can just add to the existing thread under Monthly Book Reads

Once a buddy read has been agreed, a separate thread can be created under this Buddy Reads folder

If the book then gets chosen later as a monthly read, the buddy read thread can be moved and serve as a good start to the full group discussion

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 187 comments Well I asked for it:
If the is enough interest this is a possible two for.
The Guardian 100 book I am hoping to buddy up on is: Zuleika Dobson: Or, An Oxford Love Story Edition TBD

Along with it I suspect this is the better or at least better known form of MB works: The Prince of Minor Writers: The Selected Essays

I have at least 1/2 of another book to finish first nor have I copies of either in hand. How soon and how fast is going to be a matter of the agreed schedule among us Beerbohn Buddies.

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 187 comments Anyone interested in a buddy read of:
La Débâcle by Zola

I have this copy La Débâcle. I think tied at 514 on the list.
How soon we start is open for discussion. Please let me know here or by msg if you are interested.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name | 18 comments I will read it. I’m surprised I haven’t already! I adore Zola

Leslie | 904 comments I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in attempting The Human Comedy by Balzac... It is ~90 books so I envision this quest to be multiyear! Maybe 6 or 12 books a year will hardly put a dent in the series but would at least be a start. Here is a link to the books:
https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~spok/metabook...

So what do you say? Anyone game to try?

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 566 comments Are you thinking of reading them in the same order as the website has them listed? I have At the Sign of the Cat and Racket--I'd probably be willing to at least start with you :)

message 8: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 904 comments I have no fixed plan - just the awareness that if I don't start soon, I will never be able to read them all! But the website order seems like a good one so starting with the 'Scenes from Private Life' sounds good. Let's plan on starting in January with At the Sign of the Cat and Racket then.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 566 comments Sounds good. Maybe we can get a couple others to tag along. I don't think C & R is very long.

Have you read any other Balzac before? I read Père Goriot a few years ago, and Cousin Bette--Bette was a little over the top, but I liked Goriot, even it was kind of a downer. I've also got a biography of Balzac I've been meaning to read forever: Prometheus: The Life of Balzac by André Maurois

message 10: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 904 comments I have also read Cousin Bette - I liked the 'over the top'-ness of it! I haven't read Père Goriot yet (though I even own that one in print) but I did read Eugénie Grandet. That one was also a bit of a downer but so easy to read (at least for me it was much easier than reading Flaubert!).

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 566 comments Leslie wrote: "...but so easy to read (at least for me it was much easier than reading Flaubert!). ..."

Did you read it in French?

message 12: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 904 comments No - I took French in high school but am no where close to being able to read a book in it! I did, years ago when it was fresh in my mind, read The Hobbit in French. I recall laughing immoderately at the French version of Bilbo's address (Bag's End became something like "Cul de sac de Sac")...

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 566 comments Hi Leslie--did you have any sort of schedule you thought of following for this, or a start date? I'm very flexible at the moment--if you'd rather not read on a schedule, that's fine too, though I think conversations are a little better when everyone's at the same place in the book. Either/or is entirely okay with me.

I agree that a schedule of some sorts would be good but haven't come up with one as yet. I guess I will set up a Balzac thread and we can hash out that sort of detail there.

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 187 comments For those of you with LRBAR , Long Range book Acquisition Radars, I have my sights set on Miklos Banffy: They Were Counted: The Transylvanian Trilogy, Volume I and in fact the entire trilogy..

There are at least two books in front of my start date and I have no real idea if all 1500 pages will be worth the effort. I see it has been reviewed but never discussed in this group.

Anyone else up for a challenge buddy read? I doubt my desk will be clear for this one much before February.

I've read They Were Counted and thought it was superb
so much so that I have They Were Found Wanting scheduled for this year
I am happy to wait for you to catch up...

message 18: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts | 363 comments I’m in for they were counted - I’m halfway through A Suitable Boy atm so I may need a couple of weeks to recover before diving into another huge saga though

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 187 comments Now the trick is going to be to remember to back here towards the end of January to make this happen.

Thanks for the encouragement about the books.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 566 comments If I get off my butt and finish La Débâcle by then, I will probably join in. I'll be able to read a lot faster, since I'll be reading in translation

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 187 comments Transylvanian Trilogy update.
I am now well within 1 book for starting and I have Vol 1 in hand
They Were Counted The Transylvanian Trilogy, Volume I by Miklós Bánffy

I am still thinking of a February start date. Feb 1 is 3 weeks out. How does that look?
If I get some back up I will figure out a page for us and maybe get some back ground?
What say Ye?

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 566 comments I'll work it in. Feb 1 sounds good

message 23: by Fay (new)

Fay Roberts | 363 comments February 1st is good for me. Have you worked out how you want to “buddy read” it?
