Nika This book was amazing, I'm so glad I finally read it! It was so funny, I couldn't stop smiling and laughing. Also, Daemon Black <3 I loved the relationship between Katy and Daemon was awesome. I'm very happy with the ending and I want to continue with the series ASAP. Loved this book so much, all the good things I heard about this book were for a reason and it deserves all the hype it gets. The only thing that bothered me were all the references to Twilight, too many similar scenes, only it was done better in this book. Hopefully, that won't continue in other books. However, I like this book too much to care about similarity with Twilight because this book was so much better and much more interesting. I recommend this book to everyone, especially if you need a fun, quick read that will put a smile on your face.

Allyssa | 4 comments I got the book a few days ago on my kindle and I went into the book knowing nothing, except I knew about the scene of Daemon meeting Katy in the first chapter, because someone did that as their scene during booktubeathon. I ended up picking the book up yesterday and I would've probably read it in one sitting if my kindle hadn't of died when I was at the park with my cousins.

Overall I really did love the book. I'm really excited to start Oynx.

Chu (Pikachu) | 9 comments I actually didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. It was way too twilighty for me. I guess I'm also not liking the idea of falling in love with some kind of light? Is the series getting better? I'm not quite sure about picking up Onyx.

message 5: by Annika (new)

Annika (anyfey) I absolutely loved it and I totally understand why everyone is raving about it! But I don't think it's that much like Twilight, I mean yes the set up is similar but the execution of it is a lot better. I can't wait to continue with the series!

Kelli (potterdancer) I absolutely LOVED this book...I did find a lot of parallels to Twilight, but honestly they weren't really that similar. When I first read this book, I wasn't as much into Daemon as I am after finishing the series. I also love Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing style and how she puts so many pop culture references into her writing. I gave this book a 4.5 stars because it was a little too Twilight like, but it was much more enjoyable. Definitely continue on with the series, because it just continues to get better! This book makes you feel really happy, it pulls you into the plot, and it leaves you begging for more.

message 7: by Ana (last edited Sep 04, 2014 12:53AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Ana (404-equivalent) | 57 comments It was okay, but nothing special really. It was entertaining, but not much more than that.
I liked Daemon/Katy relationship, it was really fun and what kept the book interesting in my opinion. The plot itself wasn't particularly new.
Since everybody is comparing it to Twilight, I can definitely see the parallels, but while reading it didn't bother me. I wasn't really thinking about Twilight so it was all good. It seems to be unpopular opinion, but I dare to say that I enjoyed the writing style of Twilight much more than of Obsidian. The story? I don't know. Obsidian is just pure fun.

I don't think I will continue with the series anytime soon. Maybe someday if I'll feel I need a quick entertaining book to read, but for now I have other books I would much rather read.

Katrin (bookishbiscuit) I really didn't like the first 60-70 pages because they reminded me too much of Twilight. But it got better. I liked the relationship between Katy and Daemon and the fact she is a book blogger (though it wasn't a big part of the book). In the end this whole "we don't like each other even if we like each other"-thing started annoying me but over all I gave Obsidian a 3/5 stars because it did entertain me but I didn't fascinate me as much as I hoped to.

Nikki | 2 comments I think I'm the opposite of most people. I thought it was okay in the beginning, but then it just became a carbon copy of Twilight.

Monica | 6 comments I finished and was not impressed. It was somewhat entertaining but I don't think I will be continuing the series any time soon. Maybe when I need a fast and simple read.

message 11: by Ross (new)

Ross Davidson | 10 comments Unimpressed with most of it. I hated Daemon's character, Katy was okay, Dee was pretty good, but no one else got any real time or development. The reveal of who they really were came too late, as did the threat of the Arum.

All in all I liked bits of it, and I liked certain ideas that were set up, but it never truly delivered.

I'd maybe read the sequel if I wanted a fast sci-fi read. As others have said, too Twilight-y.

I'd probably give it a 2/2.5 out of 5. It's not terrible, I can see and understand why others like it, but it didn't gel with me.

message 12: by Annika (new)

Annika (anyfey) Seriously I'm starting to feel rather stupid because I liked it so much :/

Monica | 6 comments Annika wrote: "Seriously I'm starting to feel rather stupid because I liked it so much :/"

No need for that >.< different people like different genres. I for once don't usually like this genre, I only read it because of the book club and because I saw a lot of booktubers taking about it. I'm more of an epic fantasy and historic fiction fan.

Andrea (wiccanangel12) Annika wrote: "Seriously I'm starting to feel rather stupid because I liked it so much :/"

I wouldn't worry to much about it. I for one absolutely loved this story and I'm actually surprised by the number of people who didn't like it...

Andrea (wiccanangel12) I actually did a full review of this book on my blog, but overall I gave this story a 5/5. Maybe it was just me, but I for one loved that this was a simpler book, and it took all everything that I enjoyed about Twilight and made it better.

message 16: by Ross (new)

Ross Davidson | 10 comments Absolutely nothing wrong with loving it. If everyone liked the same things the world would be boring as hell!

I was hoping to like it more despite not being overly enthused by the synopsis. It's an almost universally acclaimed novel in the world of booktube. But hey, different strokes!

message 17: by Kat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kat (thechamberofbooks) I loved this book and I have no shame in it!! Amazing, <3 it was super funny and entertaining and i found myself laughing out loud many times while reading. I almost read it in one sitting but i fell asleep at 4:20 in the morning :P
I gave it 5/5 stars and I am super excited to continue in with the series!! :)

message 18: by Kat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kat (thechamberofbooks) *continue on

p.s. can someone tell me where can I find a Daemon? Seriously I hated that guy sometimes but I couldn't help but fall in love with him <3 I loved his relationship with Katy!

message 19: by Sandy (new)

Sandy O I totally agree that this book reminded me of twilight. It gave me all of the same feels I felt when I read that and it gripped me like Twilight did (which admit with a tiny amount of book shame).

Started it today and I'm already 89% done with Onyx so I'm clearly a fan, 4.5/5

message 20: by Lu (last edited Sep 07, 2014 10:45PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lu (analureads) I just finished the book and I have to say: I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

In the beginning it was very Twilight-y for me, but the characters were so funny that I continued reading. After a while I kind of got used to the similarities, though they made me roll my eyes sometimes. The fact that Katy, despite needing to be rescued every few chapters, fought Daemon's cockinness really made me like her and I even got to liking Daemon by the end.

Overall, it was an entertaining and fun read and I'll probably pick the next one in the series next, since this book put me in a weird Lux mood.

message 21: by Shari (new)

Shari Tapscott (shariltapscott) I actually liked the book more than I thought I would. The squabbling between Katy and Daemon was a little much at times, but it definitely made for great tension between the two. I wasn't sure a romance between a human and an alien made of light, but I got past it. Some scenes seemed a little a little too juvenile, maybe? Like Dee stealing Daemon' s keys so he would hang out with Katy. All in all, I did enjoy it, and I downloaded the next book. I would give it 3.5 stars.

Lacey | 8 comments I liked the book. The ending was pretty good, I really liked the last fight scene with Baruck or whatever his name was. I like how the ending was with Katy and Daemon. There's still a "hard to get" type relationship. Lol! Anyway, I'm not sure if I'll continue on with the series...maybe if I find it for super cheap or something, then maybe. Not sure yet.

Sydney | 14 comments It was awesome and now I'm reading onyx

message 24: by Britt (new) - rated it 1 star

Britt (novellybritt) This book definitely got better once Katy found out about the Luxen, but I still didn't captivate me. It was almost a DNF for me, but I trucked through and read the whole thing. I'm glad I did because it helped me change my opinion on it. Dee made this book for me. If there wasn't a character like her, I don't think I could have finished it.

I don't think I'll be continuing on with the series, at least not any time soon. 3/5 stars for me.

Jolie (jwarrenreads) | 8 comments I loved this book so much and the tension between Katy and Daemon was really cute!

message 26: by Sheh (new) - added it

Sheh okay so i finished the book last night and i honestly didn't expect to like it as much as i did, i can't wait to read the rest of the series !

sybilla | 1 comments I really liked this book, It was a quick read and I loved how Jenifer creates this awesome deduction of aliens in a modern time, I loved the ending and I loved dee, daemon and katy,

Julie • bujo.books I liked his book a lot! I don't read paranormal (more out of stubbornness and neglect than dislike) and this was a pleasant surprise! The book had its YA cliches, but that didn't stop me from liking it.
I personally haven't read Twilight, so I probably don't have a good opinion on this, but I can see where people are coming from. It didn't bother me.
I felt like this books was a much better Beautiful Creatures with some Shadowhunter in there. Not to mention the whole alien light bulb thing and Arum thing felt slightly Whovian. Overall, 4.25.

message 29: by Lily (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lily I didn't really like this book much. I picked it up because of this book club, even though it originally didn't interest me, because paranormal romance REALLY isn't my genre.
I enjoyed Daemon and Katys fights and banter at the start, but it really annoyed me towards the end. It seemed kind of forced, because they got a long quite well at times. The writing style wasn't very special and neither were the characters. The whole stay away from me really got on my nerves and for some reason it took me pretty long to read this :/ The twilight comparison was EVERYWHERE! And the plit wasn't anything new.
2 stars

Bookworm | 20 comments This book was okay, I guess, but nothing more than that. I wish we got to know Dee better, she was my favorite charachter. I did like the ending and some other parts as well, but I really didn't like the relationship between Katy and Daemon. I'll give this book 3/5 stars.

message 31: by Anna (new) - rated it 2 stars

Anna (abookobsessed) I really loved the book. It was intereszing to read about the creatures the author created and I also really liked the characters, especially Katy. But Daemon is just amazing, although he acts really stupid sometimes. Overall I really love the book and can't wait to jump into the second book!

Christina (choiychristina) | 2 comments I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the book - I read it in 2 sittings! It was very quick and very entertaining. It had a slight Twilight-esque feel to me, but way better. I very much appreciated Katy's character - I loved seeing her growth throughout the book and appreciated how empowered she became by the end! :) I'm definitely intrigued enough to keep reading.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the ending - it almost felt kind of anti-climatic for me? Particularly the last battle - I thought that there could be so much more to it. Mainly because I still don't fully understand how it all happened with Katy...? I don't know if I missed it completely while reading, but it confused me and so, it felt way anti-climatic because I did love the idea of the "light" versus the "dark".

message 33: by Lucia (new)

Lucia (aluithe) | 31 comments It was really slow in the beginning but the story ended up sucking me in. The twilight references actually made me giggle and the book as a whole was A LOT of fun for me 4/5 stars for me

Rebecca Gatzlaff | 15 comments I liked this book. It did have some flaws in the book. My favorite character was Dee. I loved how Katy was playing hard to get and she didn't always listen to Daemon. It did have some romance but not a lot of sex scenes, which is a plus in my book. I didn't like how Katy was swooning over Daemon, but she always said she didn't like him at all. Daemon was an ass but I grew to love him throughout the book. I love aliens and sci/fi so much! This book also reminded me of the movie cocoons! The movie is so good!

Megan (thebookishgirlinbooktown) I really liked the book. I think the characters are great and I love the storyline. And now I totally want to read the second book.

☯☾Angela☽☮ | 7 comments I'm so in love with this book and I read it in a day and a half! It's also so ironic that I read it in September when I had no idea it was the pick for this month. I'm now halfway into onyx and it's just amazing! Daemon Black <3

I thought Onyx was even better than Obsidian! Let me know what you thought of it when you finish :D

Emmanuel (emdawgreads) | 3 comments Ah, the end, with all the light blasts and connections to Katy, was kind of ambiguous or was that just me? I don't feel like it explained everything as well as I thought it would..

In the end, Obsidian is exactly what I thought it would be, which isn't actually a bad thing!
Still unsure about Onyx though..

message 39: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma Hall | 8 comments I was really disappointed in the beginning of the book as it just seemed like a twilight rip off with slightly less annoying characters.. I really really hated Daemon though and even though I understand it now Katy should still just ignore him... However, when the booked stopped copying twilight so much and Daemon started to be nicer I really enjoyed the book and I've decided that I'll give the next book in the series a chance... If it is similar to Obsidian though I think I'll give up on the series... I have better things to read.. I think the ending is what sold me on continuing the story

message 40: by Ivy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ivy I hated the begging of the book. I mean it wasn't so bad that I had to put it down... I was still interested in the plot but I felt like I just wanted to know what happened after she found out they are aliens. Which didn't happen till chapter 16. But by the end of the book I was wanting more and will continue the series. The copy that I read had an extra thing with Daemon's point of view from a couple different things that happened in the book. After reading that ending of the book and that extra thing I think I have come to understand Daemon somewhat. Other then that I loved the characters like Dee and Kat. But I would love some more backstory... Maybe in the rest of the series. I guess I'll have to read to find out.

Jenn (Booksessed) | 6 comments I never thought I would get so attached to aliens. Besides The Doctor, of course. I loved the book so much. More than I expected, though I think my mind would have been blown had I gone into it blind.
I loved the dynamic between Daemon and Katy, and all the humor. Dee was by far my favorite. I liked that it ended kind of on an ambiguous note. It makes me want to pick up the second book.

I would highly recommend you pick up the second book. It's sooo much better than the first!

message 43: by Bin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bin (daisybabie) | 2 comments Obsidian was (still is I believe) a free kindle download. I really had no expectations when I started, only to have it read in time for the live chat.

Man, oh man, I was blown away. Seriously. Before I finished book one, I found myself purchasing 2 and 3 on a whim. I knew by the time I started 2 that I was a goner. I bought 4 and 5 thereafter. I devoured them all in a matter of 7 days. They aren't short reads either, and for me, this is saying a ton.

I finished book 5 this past Friday. It's Monday now. I can't stop with all the feels still. I think I am having separation anxiety or something. *sigh*
So dang good!
