Yeah it was really rough to read. I understand its importance in the literary canon, but I don't think i was mature enough to handle, especially since it wasn't something we were able to discuss in class to dissect it. I think that's why a lot of other books with difficult topics aren't as bad when you read it as a group. Like my senior seminar in college was Toni Morrison focused, and The Bluest Eye was our first book. That's definitely got some trigger warnings in it, but I liked reading it better because we got to have an in-depth conversation (also I really like Morrison's writing better).

message 104: by Teri (new)

Teri (teria) | 1554 comments I didn't finish any books this week.

QOTW:
I grew up in Utah, and based on the very conservative religious environment, we didn't read books that had a lot of trigger worthy content.

This is my shortest check-in ever.

Tania | 678 comments Hello. I finished two books last week.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer - used for a book becoming a movie, though release date has been moved, reading the book has made me less likely to see the movie as I didn't care for it

Year One by Nora Roberts - I don't even remember why I put myself on the waitlist for this book at the library (last year!) but it was finally my turn and I had to stop what I was doing to read it in one borrowing cycle (it is still in high demand). It was riveting. This would work for a book about someone with a super power.

QOTW: I don't remember any assigned books that would have needed a trigger warning. I can't say that I want trigger warnings, but I understand why people do.

message 106: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments - The last 60% of My Husband's Wife for my two books that share the same title (2) for PopSugar
- The Assassin's Blade for my book with a criminal character for ATY
- About 2/3 of Crown of Midnight for my book that I think should have been turned into a movie for PopSugar

QOTW:
I'm a bit conflicted about trigger warnings in general because while I think they are important, I sometimes find them a bit spoiler-y. I've often read reviews which offer warnings for content that is coming up later in the book, and it bothers me a bit because it makes me feel like it's a checklist of things to come, and I find myself waiting for it to happen, if that makes sense. I think The Kite Runner would now have a trigger warning, but honestly most of the books I was assigned probably would by now.
