Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments HI all. I think there used to be a 'currently reading' discussion, but I could not find it....

I am currently reading Girl in a Green Gown The History and Mystery of the Arnolfini Portrait by Carola Hicks by Carola Hicks

The author is, apparently, a very experienced art author (must try and get my hands on some more of her work) and this book alternates detailed descriptions and interpretations of the famous painting with a details positioning of it within history.

Really enjoying reading it.

Seems like an interesting read, do let us know if you learn something surprising or new ;-)
Did you have a look at the Pic of the Day - February?
I started with this painting there and we had already a bit of a discussion about it:

Heather | 8548 comments Hey Deborah! You know, I don’t think we do have a folder for currently reading. We have reviews and book suggestions, but I’m glad you opened this thread! Do you want to leave it here or I can create it’s own folder and people could create threads for their own reads...

I was electronically AWOL for February, thanks for bringing it to my attention. I will have a look at the video tonight. I learnt SO MUCH surprising and new! It is a really good really comprehensive book.

The author alternates chapters about the symbology, colour and history of the details of the painting, with chapters about the history. Because, amazingly enough, this one really old painting is one with close to perfect provenance! Amazing!

Anyhow, I could rave on for ever, and I will in the review.

Based on my other groups, one single thread might work better; that way someone who may not want to create a separate thread can just weigh in whenever they like.

I reckon the key is to have it easy to find near the top though;I scrolled through all the topics and all the threads looking for a 'currently reading' one. There are quite a lot. Maybe just emphasise that ANY book you are reading can be mentioned, we can see how that goes.

Kristine Henshaw (kristilou) Might I suggest movie reviews related to the arts as well as books?

That's a good idea. I have a folder for "Film as Art" which probably isn't the same thing that you are talking about. I'll create its own folder, separate from that specifically for movie reviews. Thank you for the idea, it's a good one!

Heather | 8548 comments Deborah, I thought that was a great idea to have the 'currently reading' as a topic for a folder and just now found that we do already have that folder.

Labeled "What are you Reading?" where anyone can post reviews or thoughts on the books which they are currently reading.

Ah, ok I will look more carefully for it next time I am reading an art book :)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments I have a friend in boston who compiled a list of movies that had photography as a primary theme. He came up with more than 50.

That is impressive!
I can only come up with three four off the top of my head. Though I don't watch movies that much.
