After reading The Program it quickly became one of my favorite books. I found it very interesting from the beginning due to the fact that in their society teen suicide is an epidemic. And I must say it: the feels! One minute I was just about ready to cry and yelling at fictional characters the next. I definitely ship James and Sloane! I'm still deciding whether or not I should like Michael... and yes ma'am I do plan to read the next one.
I could not get into the story. I rarely never finish a book. This is one I could not even get half-way through. I was very excited about the premise. I was very disappointed. I will give a another chance when I have time.
As a whole I actually enjoyed reading this. It's an interesting concept but does focus a lot on the love story side of things more than the dystopian side. I'm looking forward to reading book two though. :)
I really, really, really was not a fan. I felt like it cheapened the gravity of depression and suicide and that Sloane was such a weak female character that she could not survive outside of a romantic relationship with a man. Didn't care for this one!
People seem to either love this book or hate it-- for me, I was utterly disgusted. I felt like the author chose suicide as a gimmick when it's a topic very near and dear to many people's hearts. "Oh no, this sucks, let me go kill myself" --> basically the book. It throws out lots of *ACTUAL* reasons for depression, like chemical imbalance, and decides oh! it must be experiences!..wtf? No? it doesn't work anything like that? It was gimmick pure and simple and I was disgusted by how the author tried to cheapen it by not even showing us a depressed character. The main character was weak and codependent and later on there was behavior that seriously blurred the lines of consent.
What?
This is supposed to be romantic?
If I could give it negative stars, I would.
I liked Sloane but she was so needy sometimes it got really annoying. James was way to protective of Sloane around Realm. I know he doesn't like Realm but still she doesn't love him like she loves you! And then there's Realm. She doesn't love you dude!!!!Get it through your head! And you can't forget about Rodger - Such a creep. I really liked the book and I am reading the second one right now. The second one is really good and is VERY surprising. My favorite part was when Sloane and James were riding home in his car and he was shirtless and they were both covered in mud and Sloane's parents saw them. :) I just can't it was so funny.
I really enjoyed the texting between Sloane and James. That was the best part. That flirting, so normal in such a difficult and challenging world
I really, really really liked this book. It was so unbelievably sad. To everyone who thought that she was making it a gimmick and cheapening suicide, it isn't really, considering it's fictional and set in the future. To this day, more and more teenagers are committing suicide than we ever have. Suicide and self harming and such has definitely lost it's shock factor, as it has became a regular thing now. Many people today take there own life for the smallest thing such as their dog dying, or something like that. I felt it was realistic in today's society. I enjoyed it a lot. It felt realistic, not like a gimmick. Realm was definitely my favorite character though.
