Juliet Warren | 3 comments The first thing I learned while reading is about the art of storytelling. Orion uses many forms of storytelling whether through large paragraphs or short bits, regardless, by the end of the story I felt like I had become friends with Orion and understood her situation. My favorite example of this is from "Moonlight"
"But while she's asleep in your arms at midnight,
I hope you look out your window and remember
that my name will forever live in the stars."
I feel like often times I struggle to put a clear storyline in my poems and it lacks the emotion and relativeness that authors such as Orion create. The second thing I learned is how the structure can be used to emphasize purpose or tone. Orion uses structures that stray from traditional ideas. In her case, the structure is used to elevate an already excited mood or add dramatic tension.
"you are your home."
It may seem simple, but when put on a blank page by itself, it creates a powerful image that stuck with me throughout my reading. The final thing I learned is the importance of images (like in "yesterday i was the moon"). In "Flux", the images used are more sophisticated to fit a more sophisticated tone of the book. the pictures can represent the tone of the piece or help dive into the purpose or deeper meaning. I can't really translate the pictures onto this review so you're just going to have to trust my word!
