Welcome. I'm not an old hand exactly either but that means I still remember what it's like to be new. One good way to get involved is to read and review independent books. You can usually get free copies of most of the books around here in exchange for an honest review on Goodreads and Amazon. Reviews are really important to helping new writers get noticed and some of the stuff out there is fantastic. There is no obligation to say nice things about a book just because you got it in a Read4Review deal, although I personally choose to review books I think I'll like, so that neither the author nor I have to suffer too much.
On that note, if you like gritty contemporary fantasy and/or dystopia, you are welcome to review my book. It has been really popular with reviewers so far, all five stars. Here's the description page: The Soul and the Seed

I could send you digital copy in various formats. Click on my name to send me a private message, if that actually sounds interesting to you.
Welcome to this entertaining zoo, in any case. Check the thread called "Anybody want to be friends" and click through some of the people who want friends, so that you can start getting some. You can start with me, if you want. I'll see you around. :)

My name is Damian. I'm a writer and landscaper from Boston, Ma. I just started self-publishing my fiction, and I'm looking to become more active in the Goodreads community.
Since I just joined this group, anyone have suggestions on how I can get involved? Or books I might want to check out?
I don't have much experience with putting myself out there and meeting people, I've always been really awkward with this kind of stuff. Trying to break from my habit of just being an isolated observer.
