Acceptable read order

I've just finished Every Heart a Doorway. My library has Beneath the Sugar Sky (book 3) immediately, but Down Among the Sticks and Bones (book 2) is on the waitlist. Book 2 sounds like a prequel, but book 3 seems to bring us back to the current time.

Is there an "acceptable read order" that may differ from the exact publication order for this series? Would I lose out on either surprise from book 2 or understanding of book 3 if I read it first?

And beyond that, are there books that can be read out of publication order?

I've read all 4 of these book. IMO, they can be read in any order. They're more "companion books" than true prequels or sequels. I do think you'd be missing out on context if you didn't read Every Heart a Doorway before reading Beneath the Sugar Sky, but I don't think the order for Down Among the Sticks and Stones matters at all in terms of the other three books.

Yes, book 2 is mostly a prequel but the epilogue takes place after the events in Every Heart a Doorway. It focuses on the story of Jack and Jill and barely touches on the other characters. Beneath the Sugar Sky doesn't include Jack or Jill at all, and revisits characters from Every Heart a Doorway plus new characters.

Then book 4 "In an Absent Dream' is a true prequel to Every Heart a Doorway and could be read in any order relative to books 2 and 3. I suppose you could even read it before book 1. The story would still make sense, but I think Every Heart a Doorway is just a nicer introduction to the world.
