The book Need, by Joelle Charbonneau, is about 16-year-old Kaylee, her best friend Nate and many other students who attend Nottawa High School in Wisconsin. One day when Nate is over at Kaylee’s house, he introduces Kaylee to the latest and greatest social networking site called NEED where members can put in a request for what they need (maybe a new IPHONE, a computer, money). They invite a few friends to join the site, and their need is fulfilled; however, when the buzz of the new site gets out, eventually everyone at Nottawa High School joins. So, in order to get what they need, the task of inviting friends is no longer valid. Instead they have to complete a new task to get what they need, tasks that keep escalating and getting more dangerous by each NEED request.
After Kaylee puts in her request to help save her severely ill brother, she starts realizing that the demands the site is making users do are not only becoming increasingly dangerous but they are becoming deadly as well. When Nate goes missing, Kaylee is determined to find him before he meets an unwelcoming fate. In her mission to do so, will Kaylee find who is behind NEED and be able to shut it down for good and ultimately, will she be able to save her brother?
This book sucked me in right away, and I couldn’t put it down. I was done with it in two days. It brings light to the lengths some people are willing to go to just to get what they want, not need, in order to keep up their image. This book definitely gets 5/5 stars, and I highly recommend it to others.
