What are you reading in Sept. '14?
Jacinta wrote: "Just finished the Riddle Master trilogy. Just didn't get it. People say it's good, I obviously missed the point."I guess it's a timing thing. I loved the series, but there are others that I have read and felt the same as you.
Kevin wrote: "The Wheel of Time. For the third time. Each time I leave off and have to start over. :)"Oh, sweet. I'm reading it for the first time. I'm almost done with the audio of Eye of the World, but intend to start with the book copy as soon as it arrives.
Just reread the Robin Hobb farseer books and the tawny man books and her latest Fitz and the Fool story. Great stuff. Now awaitng the next in the set......

That book does a lot of good things, it just does them in all the wrong ways for me.

Hi all, I'm new to the group and to the genre :)I just finished
I meant to read it at a leisurely pace since work has been a little crazy lately. That was pretty easy to do at first. I found it fun, nicely written, and charming (I fell in love with Nosy and Smithy). Then came a night when a bunch of intrigue blew up in my face and I could not put the book down even though I had to be up early the next day.
So naturally I moved on to the next book in the series and I'm now in the middle of
I'm also reading
I'm finding it very charming and endearing. I think the author is very gifted, but it's a little too much of a children's book for me at the moment. I'm going to put it on the side until the Hollidays when I can read it to my nieces and nephews. I am absolutely sure they'll love it!Now, I haven't started yet, but I'm going to start A Half a King next week to join in the discussion this month, although I'll be really late hehe.
I finished The War of the Worlds last night. Good writing. Obviously better than the movie adaptations. Late 1800s setting is somehow more scary than a present day setting.Starting up Half a King, which I may or may not complete by the end of the month. I'm enjoying it so far. Amusing.
Wanna re-read the Robin Hobb Farseer trilogy and also start with Pawn of Prophecy - the first book in the Belgariad series by David Eddings. Been meaning to read the Belgariad for ages now, since I loved the Mallorean so much. Maybe I'll re-read the Mallorean series too while I'm at it. If a djinni magically adds more hours to my days. Like lots more.
trying to finish up Killing Jesus: A History. I try to read something non-speculative fiction every other book. This one just isn't holding my interest tho. I think I was expecting something different...
Gosh, the Belgariad comes before the Mallorean (chronologically and publication), so you will want to read Mallorean again afterwards I think. They are extremely similar in plot though, so don't be surprised when you have deja vu.
**Not a criticism - I loved them both!**
Dhanusha wrote: "Wanna re-read the Robin Hobb Farseer trilogy and also start with Pawn of Prophecy - the first book in the Belgariad series by David Eddings. Been meaning to read the Belgariad for ages..."I'm in the middle of Royal Assassin. This is my first time reading anything by RH. I'm really loving it so far!
Was on vacation for the past week and had lots of time in the car & on the train to read, so:Cibola Burn; The Long Ships by Frans G. Bengtsson (historical novel about Vikings); The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, The Broken Kingdoms, The Kingdom of Gods, all by N.K. Jemisin; A Dreamer's Tales by Lord Dunsany ; and Tome of the Undergates and Black Halo, both by Sam Sykes, were finished, and I'm currently reading The Skybound Sea (third in Sykes' trilogy).
Unfortunately, because I was traveling with my laptop with the less-than-ideal keyboard, I didn't get a chance to do full reviews. Ah, well.

The Mallorean books were my first foray into fantasy, along with the Lord of the Rings series. To think about it, these two series were responsible for getting me hooked into this genre.
Aha. No surprises about Belgariad being similar, in the Mallorean Mr. Eddings makes it clear that time is an endless cycle of events repeating over and over :) I'd love to read more on Garion, and hopefully there's stuff on Errand and Zedar. Silk though, remains my favourite character of the series!

I'm just waiting to get my hands on Fool's Assassin, but looking at my to-read pile that'll have to wait until sometime next month.
Kieron wrote: "Just started The Blade Itself by Joe Abercombie."I envy you - I loved those books. Wish I could go back and experience them for the first time again!
Finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Sort of blew past the entire read along in my side group, but I got sucked in too deep, I guess.
Here's my review.
Here's my review.
Finished The Skybound Sea and decided to revisit Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky world with a couple of short novels from Subterranean Press -- Bone and Jewel Creatures (finished), Jewels and stones, a chapbook published with it (also finished) and Book of Iron (just about to begin). She is so good ...
Joseph wrote: "Finished The Skybound Sea and decided to revisit Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky world with a couple of short novels from Subterranean PressI recently read Range of Ghosts and thought it was brilliant, so I really should check out some of her other works.
I've finished The Relic Guild, which I really enjoyed, and now I've finally got a chance to get to The Mirror Empire. Loving it so far!
Amy wrote: "I recently read Range of Ghosts and thought it was brilliant, so I really should check out some of her other works."I haven't read much myself -- just the Eternal Sky trilogy and now these. They're short and pretty much unrelated to the trilogy aside from being in the same world, but I highly recommend them.
And I need to add Mirror Empire to the TBR pile sooner rather than later. Just trying to figure out if I need to read her Bel Dame Apocrypha trilogy first. (I know it's not related, but sometimes I get obsessive about starting at the beginning of an author's work.)

"I saw God's War in the bookshop the other day and almost bought it, but I'm aware it's more SF than Mirror Empire is. I thought I'd go for the epic fantasy first, as that's my preferred genre, and I'll work backwards if I enjoy it enough.
I've just finished listening to The Way of Kings as an audiobook. I'm going to listen to Words of Radiance next. Sanderson has come a long way as a writer since his Elantris and Mistborn books. I'm also working on Deryni Rising and it's my 3rd attempt on that, :).
I've also got a copy of Promise of BloodI'm about 3/4 of the way through. There's an interesting video on Youtube from a Google Hangout event where they talk about writing and building stories, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph3vT...
Finished Book of Iron and am about to start The Troupe by Robert Jackson Bennett. Hooray for creepy traveling carnivals! (Or something along those lines.)
Finishef rereads of Robin Hobbs Rain wilds dragon books. Ok but left wanting more. Now moving on to latest Jack Reacher novel.
Sigh......not doing much reading this month. The Bell at Sealey Head is begun, however. Re~read.
I'd like to bring to your notice, that The Way of Kings is free on Kindle and with Apple.
Here's the Amazon link.

Don't know for how long.
Prince of Thorns - i am on chapter 8 or so. I had to give up on Killing Jesus: A History. I usually finish what I start, but I was just not a fan of the style of the narrative.
I read the latest novel in Brent Weeks lightbringer series The Broken Eye Plus the first two since I had not read them since 2012 The Black Prismand The Blinding Knife I have really enjoyed this author - he wrote another series that was ok - but this one is much better!
The Blasted Lands, second book of the Seven Forges series. Much better than the first (though I liked the first enough to care for the second), I'll wait for the sequel. Lord of the White Hell part I and II, which reminds me why I should stay clear of juvenile Gbit, but I read both parts. Two Necromancers, a Bureaucrat, and an Elf, a very funny short story, recommended. Heir of Fire, yes, again a dollop of YA and a fix of tropes, this series keeps getting better. The real discovery of the month, To Ride Hell’s Chasm, a standalone tale graced by refined words, and lastly I'm currently reading City of Stairs, a book with lot of buzz.
Continued my Gaiman binge with The Graveyard Book. Much more different from his other stuff, but still signature Gaiman.

Here's my review
I've finished Obernewtyn last night. I thought it was pretty good. The Misfits reminded me of the X-Men.I've just received a digital copy of an ARC, which I I've already started. It's not yet released and it's not listed yet, but it's supposed to come out next month. It's called Bad Wizard by James Maxey, which is a twist on The Wizard Of Oz, more of a sequel seems like. I've already enjoyed books by this author before and also enjoy the Oz stories as well, so it's right up my alley. :) And if anyone's interested, you could probably contact the author for a free digital copy too.
I more or less plan on getting back to the Obernewtyn series after that.
I'm reading Eclipse Penumbra and I think to finish the series this month. Before these books, I haven't read anything by John Shirley, but I like his style and the crude reality of this work.
Just completed:Dragon Strike (Age of Fire #4) by E.E. Knight.
Currently reading:
Song of the Dragon, by Tracy Hickman.
Just finished the First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Probably one of my favorites. I fell in love with all the characters, brutal or not, they were all bad Ass! I give the trilogy a 4.5 (out of 5) star rating and the Bloody Fucking Nine a 10. Definitely a MUST READ!!!!
Now I'm moving on to Brandon Sanderson's
So many excellent books being read this month! I've just read Scriber by Ben Dobson. Can't link on mobile. The cover caught my eye, pretty. Really enjoyed it, even when I had tears actually rolling down my face.
Just read the new Star Wars book I've been looking forward to most.
I think it's Luceno's best to date. It's the first book from him I've read where it was not only interesting, but engaging. Normally his stuff can be a little boring.
Here's my review.

Today I finished Eclipse Penumbra and I'll start tomorrow Eclipse Corona, the last book of this series.

Brenda ╰☆╮ wrote: "Tell us what you are reading this month."I'm reading book 4 of A Sorcerer's Ring called A Cry of Honor and have been enjoying the series a lot. Classic medieval fantasy.
So this month I reread the first 3 Expanse books and then Cibola Burn. I really like this series, so excited to see the show.I also read A Discovery of Witches and the other two books in this trilogy. I liked it aside from the extreme "romance" tropes - a nice change of pace from Angry Kickass Female urban paranormal stuff.
I read Lock In by John Scalzi and enjoyed it a lot - easy read, maybe the mystery part was a bit weak and suffered from all the other stuff he was doing in the story, but still good.
And right now I'm halfway through The Steerswoman by Rosemary Kirstein which I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited and I'm really liking it so far, very interesting world and good female characters. A lucky find :)
(sorry to all those in the same clubs as me - I'm copy/pasting this same post everywhere)
