Can you reveal what movie your brother was in?"

I have kept his identity off social due to the fact that he uses my maiden name (his name, too, obviously) which is an unusual name so TMI on a public forum. Plus he has kindly kept private family members private and I think he prefers it that way.

Suffice to say he is not famous enough to be a household name, but has c. 50 imdb credits and has done things ranging from pure junk to top notch stuff. He, like most actors making a living at it, is not rolling in money.

He has been in more than one horror movie, but mostly small screen stuff, and has played cops, murderers, victims and various and sundry other roles of many kinds, plus a few leads and recurring roles including one prime time series over the past 21 years (so you see, 21 years and c. 50 credits, mostly small screen, means he is not a big name--if that were 50 good sized feature film roles or very famous series in that time, that would be a different kettle of fish entirely.) But mostly he gets guest star roles, although he is a cast member of one Hallmark movie mystery series now, NOT a star and not seen in the previews. Not high paying, but keeps him working.

Karin | 9225 comments Meli wrote: "Oh, wow! Intriguing nonetheless."

I stand corrected--he was recurring character in a one season prime time show and a lead in another that lasted c. 5 seasons. But he's done guest spots on others--it's a tough life fraught with rejection and, being over 40 now and not really famous, it's become harder.

If you hadn't clarified I would assume all those roles / jobs would be monetarily fruitful. That's too bad it doesn't elicit a good cash flow.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Karin- you've got me so interested on who your brother is! Haha.

Otherwise, Meli- you know you've got my creepy vote! We can revel in our creepy tastes together, lol. Just a questions of how many points to throw at it. I rarely use points for the tag voting, and after throwing 10 at LGBTQ and losing last month I'm skeptical, lol.

I agree, a lot of psychological thrillers are very creepy, without being horror/gore/gross!! Just read The Death of Mrs. Westaway, would be great for a creepy tag. I want to read You soon, just had a netflix series out based off it- seems PERFECT for a creepy tag! .

I appreciate the votes, Joi, no matter how many points you throw at it....

I feel like I am campaigning for political office.

"Vote for creepy, as versatile as the beautiful tag!"
"A vote for creepy is a vote for the underdog!"

Those aren't very good, I'll have to keep working on my slogan.

But like those cast members in minor roles in long running musicals (thinking Phantom of the Opera for example), your brother has forged a career as an actor and works steadily. I'd say that he's a real success. He's one of those actors you see time and time again, and even grow to recognize but not really identify by name.

Meli, you are absolutely right!
And I shouldn't have said I'm against - which sound judgmental, while I actually meant - I don't like reading it myself, I'm not against it being chosen of course.

The truth is I'm a bit of a wuss, lol
I basically have two reaction to horror movies, I'm super scared or deeply sad. I can watch it, but will be in the next room, just looking from a good distance, hidden behind a door, or will demand to know the ending before I can put myself through the onslaught of adrenaline. I think I squeezed my eyes half shut and had my fingers in my ears through the entirety of 28 Days Later in the cinema. My ears hurt after :)
(Mind you, I am a Buffy fan. does that count a bit?)

But to be honest - creepy can be Lolita, Flowers in the attic (the creepiest?), or the mammoth Andy: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol: A Factual Fairytale which I'm reading right now, or my Brazil book

message 63: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4100 comments Ok Meli, I’ll play. Have thrown a few points your way! I really don’t do horror - I am pathetically nightmare prone! - but if ‘creepy’ wins I’ll push myself out of my comfort zone and read something in that genre, ok? Maybe Stephen King or Peter Straub (I think I own ‘Ghost Story’). I agree it’s a very flexible category though - lots of psychological thrillers or murder mysteries would work (Tana French) or books with seriously unpleasant protagonists. Lots of Neil Gaiman on the list. Anything with a ghost might qualify too.

message 64: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12924 comments I still maintain creepy is a contender. I may be all by myself in my wish. But i’m in the year of the Trim, Baby!

I'm with you on Flowers in the Attic being the creepiest - I stumbled across a terrible movie version the other day having managed to forget it existed, and I'm wondering how my generation is even vaguely sane having grown up reading that (& the equally awful / disturbing My Sweet Audrina).

message 67: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments It's funny that Flowers in the Attic made the GAR list last year. PBS polled people from all over the country asking - what is your favorite book - and Flowers in the Attic was in the top 100 of them! I'm committed to reading one from that list every month, so if creepy wins, I might add Flowers... I think we're reading White Teeth in June, but I don't suppose that fits any of the tags.

Me too! That adrenaline (or cortisol?) shot gives me a stomach ache! The suspense is sometimes worse than the gore. I actually felt that way last week when reading the Great Alone, just based on what I had previously heard about the book.

I hate a lot of horror, but I absolutely loved Buffy too. It was one of the best written shows on tv. I believe that there are horror movies geared towards boys/men, and horror stories for girls/women. The pacing is different, as well as the themes and the amount of dialogue. Imdb.com shows ratings by gender and age, and it was interesting to see. My defense against horror movies (especially zombies) is to laugh. This was easy with Buffy because the vampire makeup was so bad.

message 69: by Susie (new)

Susie I LOVED Buffy. I still miss it.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments I am pleased to see my campaign is gaining some grass roots movement ;) Thanks for the support, KateNZ and all!

It will be interesting to find out the results after this lively discussion that has become very creepy-centric.

Idit - I think Buffy absolutely counts!

The V.C. Andrews books could probably all qualify for creepy. I would love to read one, but I have spoiled the two I am most interested in (Flowers in the Attic with the movie, and My Sweet Audrina via Worst Best Sellers podcast).

I have so many creepy, but I think I will read The Nest if creepy makes the cut. It was recently republished among a curated set of five 70s/80s mass market paperbacks by Grady Hendrix (of Paperbacks from Hell fame) as a subscription through Valancourt.

I have Lolita on deck for summer so I will save that...

Is creepy one of the few tags that DOESN'T fit Outlander??

The suspense used to be the worst for me too - I could watch scary films if they were muted (the music was killing me), and I loved any and all Tarantino. But in the last decade, torture just makes me sad. My husband watched the whole of Dekster and I couldn't even be in the same room.

My tastes have definitely changed too. There are certain themes I can't stomach.

I think it is best to consume only what adds value for you, so I won't push horror on you, but "creepy" will cover all our bases for the June tag... Anything, ANYTHING!, you want to read "creepy" will cover it. You can trust me, I am a tag politician >:-)

Creepy could fit part of Outlander too, I suppose. Especially the first two books with Captain Jack Randall. He was a sicko. There is also some black magic in #2 and #3, and a few of Clair's medical cases might creep out some people.

Thanks, I agree, but he did have a four year gap with no work! That was tough. Things have turned around now and now that they are back in Canada his wife makes commercials, which now that they have two kids together (plus his stepdaughter) she finds better than her old career. Gabaldon also tells a good ghost story. There's a very creepy one in The Fiery Cross; something involving a rowan tree and a serial killer.

But my TBR has a story of Eve, and an Esther too, now that I am thinking about it. I thought it was funny that retellings seemed to be housed in YA, when I don’t have any of my 20 retelling choices housed there. It’s all Austen, Russian Myths, Wicked, Biblical, Cleopatra, Tudor royalty, etc, Midrash-y stuff....

There are also retellings of classic novels set in contemporary times, plays, and many other things for people who don't care for fairy tale retellings :). AND there are scifi retellings of fairy tales if you don't like Beauty, although I gave that McKinley novel 4 stars.

Well, just on the first page I saw The Handmaid's Tale, 1984 and a few other dystopian novels, classics like The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein, thrillers such as The Girl on the Train and various and sundry other things--in fact I've read a fair number of books on it. As I mentioned before, none of these will stretch my reading to new places or even almost never visited places--military included scifi and a variety of other books I've read.

I don't think trim will be announced until the tag and that voting doesn't close until FRI 5/23. Maybe in a few days?
