The Name of the Wind question

I have read a book a few years back and really liked it but haven't been able to remember the name. I'm wanting to say it was a trilogy but not sure. It was a fantasy novel that had a master mechanic/machinist that made war machines that went to the opposite side to get revenge on his people after he was done wrong. I believe his family was taken or killed. I vividly remember this master craftsman proving to the far less capable craftsmen that he joined about who he was and what he was capable of. He created a disc/gear and was so upset with the quality because where he came from it would never be accepted. He didn't have access to the tools and equipment he had at his old shop. But once he was finished and turned it over to the other less capable craftsman, the lesser craftsman was so amazed at the perfection of it he didn't even think he was worthy to be called a master. I thought the name of the book was The Mechanic or The Machinist but i have never been able to find this book again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
