Plot of one of the book of the series involves the guy finding his "soul mate" who had previously been held hostage in a network of Ice caves, He learns why she did not want to be 'chained' to him through entering her memory (that part I won't explain further so as not to spoil)

Her grandmothers (if I remember correctly) were/are trapped in the caves in their dragon form.
The character who had held her hostage is named Xavier (if I remember right), and their 'species' can shape shift into many different forms, and are similar to vampires due to their need for blood as part of their diet
