Confronting on many levels. The way Hanna behaved towards Michael is inexcusable as is her behaviour in the camps. Just because you are embarrassed does not give you an excuse to choose to hurt others. Although I know that Milgram, Zimbardo and others have shown that most people will be more willing to behave horridly either when authority can be blamed or they feel they are playing a role and dehumanise others, I can't really understand it at all. Perhaps some of the guards' behaviours can be explained logically using some of this research but Hanna's behaviour towards Michael as a child can't be blamed on anyone else. That was her choice and can't be forgiven. I had to take a star off because Hanna is so vile and I felt sick reading some parts. A warning that things which happen in our youth may impact our whole lives even if we didn't know how bad they were at the time.
