Jennifer | 12 comments Hello authors!

I am Jennifer. Content writer by profession and a reader in my spare time. My passion for books led me to beta reading and proofreading. Being a writer, I know how difficult it can be to find your own mistakes. Trust me, even I need someone else to look over my work. So, I'm here to help you polish your work!

My most favorite genres are YA, Fantasy, Magical Realism, Romance, Sci-fi, Mystery, LGBT. I accept books of all genres, the above list is where I'm really good at.

I write a detailed beta read report which mentions all the highs and lows of the story, character development, and the world building.(Where needed)
I provide developmental editing and copy editing at a very nominal rate. Feel free to message me for more details.

I can provide beta reading/editing samples if required. You can reach out to me via message or email - brooksjennifer751@gmail.com

Regards,
Jennifer.

Samuel | 1 comments I had sent first half of my manuscript to Jennifer for beta reading and she did an excellent job! Her reactions to the scenes and characters were so genuine, the improvement she suggested were very helpful too. I'm gonna hire her to read the rest of my manuscript as soon as I'm done editing it!

Charles | 1 comments Jennifer's feedback on my story was outstanding! I loved the fact the she didn't sugarcoat everything. She would point out the issues and provide suggestions. Along with pointing out the mistakes, she made sure to appreciate the scenes which she loved and enjoyed. I couldn't have asked for a better beta reader for my manuscript. Thanks a lot, Jennifer! It was a pleasure to work with you.

Authors, just hire her already! Her detailed feedback will surely help you improve your manuscript.

Robert | 1 comments I have a 55k manuscript - The story is about 3 best friends who are stuck in a Zombie Apocalypse. It's an adventurous story with many twists and trust. This is the first book in the series. I've already had a few people read my book but I wanted someone more professional to have a look at it.

Please let me know your charges and turnaround time.

Alexander | 1 comments I had hired Jennifer to edit my rather long manuscript (120k words) and she did an excellent job with it. Now my manuscript is more refined and polished. The changes she suggested were extremely helpful and she even went one step further to provide a brief feedback on the story. Thanks a lot, Jennifer, for all the help!

message 14: by Cassie (new)

Cassie W | 6 comments Jennifer was fast. She had my entire 110k word manuscript done in three weeks. I loved her feedback because she tells you what she's thinking while reading each section. She also tells the writer what parts work in addition to what doesn't, which I think a lot of Beta-Readers lack. It's just as important for a writer to know what's good as to what's... not so good.

Trust me. You can't afford NOT to hire her!

Erika Winterlia (marleene) | 25 comments I hired Jennifer to read my 93k YA Fantasy back in June and was promised a 7-10 days turnaround, which was perfect for me since I had a writing retreat coming up. 11 days passed and I got an email saying it was almost done and I'd get it within two days. I was super thrilled.

Unfortunately, the promised email didn't come, and over the course of 2 months I received about 4 emails asking for 2 more days. I had my hopes up all the way to the end. But still no feedback, no email in the last few weeks, and no sign of my $75 which I asked to be refunded. I know life can happen and I didn't mind waiting, but I do expect to get what I paid for or get my money back.

Update (August 27th): After I opened a case with PayPal and requested my money back, I finally got some feedback on my manuscript (about 60 days after the promised delivery). The feedback was very short and not very constructive, and it consisted of some one-line sentences in the document for the most part. Not what I expected for the amount charged, or from the previous testimonials here, but at least I got something and I'm going to leave it at that and be happy for what I got.

I'm hoping this was all just a case of life getting in the way for Jennifer and that it won't happen again to other customers.

message 26: by Isabella (new)

Isabella Modra (isabellamodra) | 5 comments Pretty disappointed in this service. As Erika mentioned above, a short turn-around of 2 weeks was promised and in the end it took almost 7 weeks. After finding out that Jennifer was going through a tough personal time, I had a feeling that the service to be delivered wasn't going to be at all what I asked/paid for, and so I requested a refund if this was going to be the case. Instead, Jennifer assured me she wouldn't deliver a disappointing service and kept asking for more time. When finally she sent the manuscript, there were very little inline comments in a 113,000 word novel - only 9 of which I found at all useful, the rest were simply a "ha ha that was funny" or "oo, interesting!" - these are comments I expect from free readers on Wattpad of age 15 and not from a paid beta reader service. The summary of her thoughts on the manuscript totaled at 226 words.

I've paid beta readers in this group who have delivered 13-page summaries and reviews at even less than what Jennifer charged. I'm not ripped off of thousands of dollars, but I did waste time waiting, time that could have been spent paying another beta reader and/or editing my own manuscript.

Also, after replying to Jennifer with the above feedback, I have still received no apology or reply from her.

I think it's only fair to inform anyone else who sees this forum of what to expect, should they request her service.

Charlotte Phillips | 9 comments Hi All,

Yep, I had the same problems as Isabella and Erika. Was given an expected turnaround of 1-2 weeks, that was almost two months ago. We've had email exchanges, always instigated by me, and Jennifer promised to send me the beta read, always in 2-3 days, but it hasn't yet materialised.

I opened a dispute with PayPal.

I understand from her emails that Jennifer is having some kind of a family emergency, but it would perhaps be better when realising that there isn't time to do the work to just refund everyone, rather than keep them hanging. As an freelance editor, you only have your reputation, and this kind of thing damages it. Communication is key, and while no-one minds if someone has to call off a job because of an emergency, they do mind if they have to chase someone repeatedly for a service they have paid for.

I'll update this post when I've received a response.

UPDATE 6th October 2019
I asked either for the edit or a refund and she has stopped replying to me altogether. It's a lot of money to lose, and very disappointing to wait so long and for nothing.

I have escalated the case with PayPal, and I hope that they can help me get the money back at least.

I wonder what happened, and do hope that she's ok, but it's too much money for me not to try and get it back. I need to use it to get another beta reader.

Hi Isabella,

First of all, thank you (and the other two girls) for honest feedback. I was about to message Jennifer but I'm happy I read your testimonials before I did.

I was just wondering which paid services you had good experiences with?

Generally, with the free services, I often experience that they can be quite flaky and I've been ghosted several times. Even though I reached out to them they won't answer and I just wanted to know if it was because my MS sucked that much :')

Thought I'd let you know how I got on...

We've all been in crisis situations, but you have to communicate with your clients, even if it's just to say that you haven't got the time and will refund them accordingly. I'm a professional editor, so I know this as well as anyone.

I have escalated the case with PayPal, and I hope that they can help me get the money back at least.

I wonder what happened, and do hope that she's ok, but it's too much money for me not to try and get it back. I need to use it to get another beta reader.

message 32: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Phillips | 9 comments After I escalated the case to PayPal, they reviewed the case and refunded me. If anyone on here is in the same position, I would recommend escalating to a dispute with PayPal, as you only have a limited time to escalate before they automatically close the case. It's simple enough, you explain what happened the online form, and they review the case. Takes a couple of weeks.

Never heard from Jennifer again. I still don't really know what happened here. Hope she's ok.
