I pronounce Matthias as Mah-tea-uhs. Maybe because in my language that's the most common. And I read the j in Inej... Don't really know how to write that out.
The russian names and such are pretty easy for me 'cause I come from another slavic country.. On the other hand, Inej is a tough one for me, I pronounce it Iney, but that's definitely wrong.. I pronounce Matthias like Liliana, even if it's wrong I like that better ;D
I will forever and always pronounce Wylan like “WILL-an” even though I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be “WHY-lan.”
Rose wrote: "Same, I always thought it was meant to rhyme with “Dylan”"Me too! I'm going to have a rude awakening when they pronounce it the correct way in the show haha.
Yeah I only new how to pronounce Matthias because I had come across the name before in another book (Shadow Children series by Margaret Haddix), and had mispronounced it then.
I am just here to note I pronounced kruge correctly Before It Was Cool. I was shocked when I learned everyone thought it rhymed with fudge.
Wylan: WHY-lihnMatthias: Mat-HE-iss
Inej: In-ej (soft 'french' g sound, as at the end of 'garage')
Kruge: Kroog-uh (Think pronunciation of Kruger)
Jan van Eck: Yun fun Ek
Grisha: Gree (like 'grim')- shuh
Merzost: Mirt-zost (o sound as in dot)
I think that's all the 'controversial' pronunciations?
Before I watched Leigh's video on YT on how to pronounce the names, I was pronouncing them asKaz (K-ah-z)
Inej (In-edge)
Nina (Nee-na)
Matthias (Ma-thee-uhs)
Jesper (Jes-per)
Wylan (Why-len)
Inej: ee-neyGenya: Like kenya but with a hard G sound
Matthias: mah-tee-uhs (this one I stand by because thats the actual scandi pronunciation)
Grisha: don’t really know how to describe it but with a shorter i sound
I think I got the rest of the important character names kinda right from what I remember
I would always imagine it like:Inej: Een-EZH (like the zh in seizure)
Matthias: Ma-THAIY-us (I knew someone with the last name Matthias who pronounced it like that so that was my default)
Wylan: WHY-lahn
And I also pronounced Genya with the hard G instead of J. I think the only one I actually got right was kruge lol
These are some that I mispronounced when I first was introduced to the Grishaverse:Kruge (krooj)
Genya (jen-ya)
Matthias (Math-eye-yas)
Guys help, I'm literally mispronouncing everything LOLWylan - WILL-an

Matthias (Muh-tey-us)
Genya (jenya)
Nichevo'ya (nikevo'ya) (it's pronounced like it's spelled:nitch-eh-voya
Merzost (mer-zost) (mer as in "mermaid" the o as in "host")

oh-prik-nik
